And now, the wailing and gnashing of teeth begins.
C.C.-bereft Brewers owner Mark Attanasio is already calling for a salary cap install. Yeah, that worked for baseball in ’94, right? It didn’t? Oops. REALLY NOW, someone tell this greenhorn that it’s business. It’s not baseball dream camp for bespectacled silver-spooned runts who get to hug their idols and are watched over by faerie godmother. OK - for some owners it’s that.
The problem with corporate – well, any- welfare is that the hand that begs grows stronger as you fill it. Soon that hand goes from begging to demanding, and soon after, to outright coercion. It’s a vicious cycle. If Attanasio can’t swing the big net to catch the big dogs, maybe he should buy an NBA municipal dogcatcher squad and work on… (more…)

This comes from John Henry himself:
“We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him,” Henry said. “After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor.”
Scott Boras speaking for Mark Teixeira:
“The Boston ownership was kind enough to request and travel to meet with Mark Teixeira,” Boras said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. “While it was a very positive meeting, Mark was candid and advised he is in the process of making a decision and is now attempting to eliminate teams.”
A very well-rendered and typically vague response from both parties. Henry implies that the economy made him “wisely” underbid for Tex. Boras suggests that Boston simply didn’t have the whole package,… (more…)
Where Goes Tex?

The buzz is that Mark Teixeira will decide amongst his suitors very soon. I say the O’s get him. They’ve been looking for a new face ever since the great Miguel Tejada was wrongfully left on the curb. And, Baltimore is the devil that Tex knows.
Too many variables with the Nats – the who? Oh, the Nationals. They have a team in DC? Who knew!
Out in LAA LAD Land, Arte will peel his posse off Tex and chase down Manny, and pull one over his crosstown rivals – who may challenge Moreno’s supremacy in the LA market if their aggression goes unchecked. That’s the brass tacks.
