The Yanks and Xavier Nady have agreed to a 1-year $6.7M contract. In doing so, arbitration proceedings [that would last through February] are avoided.
This would be Nady’s highest contract ever.
However, it’s not certain that Nady will finish the season with the Yankees. A 1-year contract is precisely the kind of lower-tier risk that bargain hunters may bite at, given the right circumstances.
In any case, Nady manages a workman’s RF and provides punch from the 6 or 7 holes in the batting order. It’s a win-win for both parties.
The downside:
Young Female Japanese Teacher [dubbed to English]: It’s Godzilla! He’s turning around and heading for the water!
Japanese Schoolchildren [also dubbed]: No! Don’t go, Godzilla, don’t go!
Also in the news, The Soxies brought back all-decade all-eugenics closer Jon Papelbon with a respectable $6.25M/1-yr payday. This will be the first season that Jon has cleared $1M in salary [you'll have to scroll way down that page to find Scrapplebon's pay history]. Papelbon will be earning more than Smoltz [$5.5M] and Penny [$5M], and just under the $6.8M/yr allotted to Dustin Pedroia.
These kids shouldn’t have any problem adjusting to their newly-minted fortunes, especially because neither Dustin nor Jon are head-cases.
What’s the over/under as to when Jon veers towards the cliff, after wifey-poo starts making the elite charity circuit rounds and swaps cheek kisses / spiceytalk with the well-combed cream of moneyed New England?
To be continued…
update: for those of you who haven’t had enough awesomeness today – bask. OK that’s enough.
update: Melky gets paid. The now and forever CFer? If he learns how to bunt and run bases, maybe.

Lib you think the signing helps the Nady trade rumors? that’s good, I guess it helps, he was gonna go to arbitration anyway, so any team who was interested in him knew they were gonna pay, at least now it’s transparent as they say, you know what your getting for the one year. I’m buying into the rumors that the Yanks will only make a move if they’re blown away. I’m surprised at the Melky deal. Maybe this wakes him up, which I hope was his problem in 08. i also saw that the Brews are now considering keeping Cameron so that deal has no legs. Good I wasn’t that fond of it anyway. Until my man McLouth becomes available I’m on board with Gardy/Melky. Again I like players that can really run, and I hope they can learn how to get on first base. Also this probably ends the speculation of Abreu coming back, well not really, Nady could still get swapped before Abreu signs somewhere. Theo keeps his string of no arbitration deals under his watch. A good deal for the two head cases DP and JP and the big head KY. I hope your jpegs prove to be prophetic, and they fall off the deep end, hahaha.. Wifey- poo has game bro… good eye
Yes, a trade’s afoot.
The Yanks settled these contracts in order to set borders and thereby accelerate the deal-making process. Hopefully, when some of the 6-odd outfielders on the roster are moved, the logic of it all will become more clear.
I dont know if it will be Nady or Swisher.Swisher comes with alot of Ks so in that respect I lean toward keeping Nady.I believe Swisher looks at more pitches/ AB than even Abreu did, so there is a reason to look at him. They are both close in money but Swisher is locked down for 2 more years.I read Cashman was taking more calls for Swisher early on, but maybe now that Nady has agreed, he might heat up.I am sure one or even two OFs will be traded.I am on the fence about Matsui. He could come back strong and play hard for his next contract or he may never be the same.If ya could move Matsui right now for a mid level prospect and not have to eat any salary then sign Manny for 2 years 50 mil., would you do the deals?
Where do you play Manny?
DH this year with Damon in LF, Manny can play 30 games in left.OF stays the same except Manny is the primary DH instead of Godzirra. The only thing I dont like about that is Posada not taking over as F/T DH in 2010.I really want to see what Posada could do if he only had to concentrate on hitting and save his knees the beating they take behind the plate.I really would have liked to had seen Bernie have that chance too.
Damon
Jeter
A-Rod/Manny
Tex
Manny/A-Rod
Jorge
Nady
Cano
Gardner/Melky
You are talking about 110+ HRs and 330+ RBI out of the 3-4-5
Works for me.
I would make it Manny-Tex-ARod.
Mothra!
The possibility would exist that the top 5 in the order could go
.310 15 75 110 runs 25 sbs
.310 15 75 110 runs 15 sbs
.310 35 115 100 runs
.310 35 115 100 runs
.310 35 115 100 runs 25 sbs
You’re killing me, man.
I’m just sayin….
That’s like having a weekend of ballgame-oktoberfest-AC/DC concert-steak brunch-blowjob-Sunday nap on the calendar…it’s just too much for a modest man to ask for.
I wasn’t raised that way, man, that’s too much of the good life. I couldn’t even hope for Manny in pinstripes. Couldn’t. Can’t. Won’t.
I would pay Manny 50 over 2 to play in the 36 games against boston. You forgot a round of golf in that weekend
I’ll get drunk on a big sunny field. You can bring the clubs, if you want.
It’s way over the top, but after Tex, who knows. I wouldn’t mind Manny. Best slugger around.
I think with Posada’s shoulder the Yanks will want to keep DH open and squeeze the maximum value out of both Damon and Posada.
How about a trade with the Mets? They need outfielders, and we got outfielders. They can bolt on Nady and Swisher, maybe we pick up…uh…don’t they have anyone we can use?
I expect a big year from Damon.Remember me telling you how I used to stand up and BOO at Legends Field when it would get quiet during his ABs in his 1st Yankee camp?I still hate him but I respect the hell out of his leadoff skills. He really is playing for his last multi year contract.Take a look at his lifetime#s.He has an outside chance at 3000 hits if he can find a place to catch on as a DH/4th OFer for a few years after 09.
Damon is lifer. You have to respect him. In his prime he had great range in CF, and he’s a powderkeg in the lineup. Tenacious competitor. He’ll be healthy this year and he’ll have good year. I don’t see him moving in trade just yet. I would be shocked by that.
Personally, I think the Nady move was smart, and market driven. I believe that some agents have recognized that with the economy the way it is, in some cases a 1 yr. deal at a reasonable rate will buy a year, with the hope that a stronger economy ( not likely ) and a weaker FA market will make a long term contract more feasible.
I’m hoping that is the case with Sheets, and the Cardinals can land him. Carpenter, Wainwright, and Sheets would be a scary 1-2-3.
As for the Yanks, Matsui is a question mark, Damon is a solid bat with a pipe cleaner arm, and Melky should be better than last year.
I suppose a deal could be in the works for an OF, but Cashman better put down the pipe if he is going to get something done. Cano for Wainwright ? I snarfed up my toaster Struedel !
For those who want to sell their souls to the devil ( oh, wait, you already did that ) for Manny, of course the bat would be a plus, and the glove couldn’t be much worse than sunny D. You could always re-sign Shelly to put in as a late inning defensive replacement.
Gardner is not the answer, at least yet. McClouth, please for the love of Scooter, let it go. If Jackson rips it up in ST, he might make the team. If not, he might still get a call up before the all star game.
So just be patient, worry about the back end of your rotation, and hope that Melky comes to play.
Libby, there’s nothing wrong with a Schmidts, Jonas Bros., Steak Ums, reacharound, alcohol / drug induced Sunday passout on the calender.
P.S. GO BIG RED
Whats up Louie? I said earlier on TDN, If the breaks are out, why bother steering? They are already over 200 million, why not make it an even 225? I said that would be an option if they traded Matsui and didnt have to eat salary. Then if you sign Manny to a 25 mil. deal you are really only paying him 12 since you move Matsuis money.
I dont see the Yankees looking for an OF in a trade but maybe.I would think if you get one he would have to be a year or two away.Otherwise why would someone trade a better ML OFer for Nady or Swisher or Matsui?Unless Cashman is planning on packaging some of the young arms with an outlielder in order to get back a productive player w/ a track record.
The way I understand it, the Cards called Cashman and asked about Cano.I would think Cashmans answer of Wainright is just to let them know that it will take alot.I dont think Cash thought they would say sure, send Robbie over and we will have your guy outta here on the first thing smokin!
What up Louie -
Sheets wouldn’t just round out the Cards rotation but also deplete the Brewers’ rotation, so the benefits are double. I would make sure my contract proposal is far and away higher than Attanasio’s, which may be plausable given his bitching about salary caps. He might have already been outbid for Sheets, and Ben is just taking his time picking out what color leather trim he wants with his new ferrari.
“Cano for Wainright” accomplished a few things, some of which have been picked up by Cards fans as I’ve been seeing on their blogs. It was an honest offer, and yet, knowingly made with the qualifier that the terms would never be accepted. First, it serves to screen the many many cheapskate GMs from ringing Cashman’s office unnecessarily, looking to pull the wool over the Yankee’s eyes. I’m sure Brian has some more peace and quiet at dinnertime as a result. Also, it re-states that the Yanks are in the market for pitching, that they have what they consider a glut of offense to offload, but they will offload only for the right price.
The front office is in an enviable position here…they have 5 [or 4, if Matsui is done] ML-caliber outfielders all signed for 1-year / zero option contracts, plus a wildcard outfielder in Gardner. Hank and Hal are more than happy with a traffic jam out there because it inevitably breeds competition, multiplied by 5 walk-year boosts. The cream will rise. They just have to wait for a desperation trade-off and then reap it.
And, enough of your pagan anti-McClouth heresies. The countdown until his free agency is ticking. That clock has been synchronized to a uranium tungsten quantuum clock in a reinforced steel bunker deep beneath the new stadium.
Jackson lent Melky is winterball mojo. Melk got +$1M as a result.
I can’t believe you brought Shelley into the mix, bro. His peak contribution to the Yankees was making Jonny Gomes look retarded during a non-brawl. Oh yeah, he once threw a guy out in 2007. Then he got a hernia. If the Cards want the lesser Duncan to go with the better Duncan, I wouldn’t complain.
As far as the backend of the rotation goes, I see Joba as the 4 and Hughes as the 5 right now and am comfortable with that. With the three horses they have up front(save the Big Brown =Wang comparison, I just used it) I feel good with 2 kids in the back.If either doesnt work out its not the end of the world. They have Aceves, Giese, Sanchez and I heard Coke was told to come to camp with starting as a possibility. They have plenty of options and I am sure more will present themselves as the season gets closer.
Right…for the 4 and 5 you can have any rotating options you want. Spin the wheel, hope you land on a winner.
I just thought I would throw this out there.Melky and Cano going to play in the WBC is ridiculous. They are both coming off sub par 08 campaigns and part of the problem has been attributed to lack of focus at different times. If anybody needs to be in camp the entire time and should be there early, its these two.
I think some of this could be fixed this year with Abreu gone.Bobby was a helluva player for the Yankees, and put up his career #s.He seems aloof when he plays and it works for him.He is the epitome of consistent at the plate. That approach just doest seem to work for Cano or Cabrera.
I said the other day that I think at this point Jeter and Cano need each other.Derek within the next 4 to 6 years will be making his case for whether he will be mentioned as a top 10 player or top 25 player all time.Cano has the ability to be well on his way to a HOF career when DJ retires.
It will take alot of work for Jeter to get to the point that I have said he has the chance to get to.He will have to work much harder than he had to in the past to put up the #s he needs for 4-6 more years. If Robbie with Jeter are willing to put in the work over that time, we could be watching one of the best middle infields of all time.
Cano just needs to realize his potential and put in the work it will take for him to be the best player he can. This year will tell alot about Mr. Cano, as M. Salles would call him, and I hope I get to tell ol’ sally to eat his words one day.
The WBC should be shot already. Given the economy, I don’t see it as an economic viability anymore.
Did IHateRobbieCano.net ever take flight?
I think Robbie and Jeter will work, now that Tex forms a real infield. That’s the best infield in baseball right there. And don’t underestimate what a model citizen like Tex can do as far as “intangibles”.
Not that I know of.God that cat drives me up a wall.I told ya about him carrying on about the awful bullpen, right?
I am dead serious about this Cano/Jeter thing.Shit, for that matter, I will take it a step further. This IF could be together for the next 4-6 years, if Jeet dont move,.The four of em have the chance to be the best infield of all-time.
They have the ability to put up these #s from Lto R
.310 35 110 .310 15 75 .310 20 80 .310 35 110
Afternoon, compadres.
Okay, let’s address funny first. The Duncan reference was generated by the uproar over the Chris Duncan signing. He basically doubled his salary, although he has produced nothing since the 2007, pre all star break season. I shouldn’t joke about OF defense as long as Chris is on the Cardinals, but nobody has called me on it.
The common wisdom ( ? ) says that as long as TLR and daddy Dunc are with the team, the kid is going to get a shot. My take is for him to prove himself healthy, produce to some extent, and move him to the AL by the trade deadline. He does have some serious power when healthy ( case in point ; in 2006, when Howard won ROY, Dunc Jr. had better HR stats in fewer games ), and his glove at 1B is actually good.
jrz, there’s no debate that Manny would give the Bombers a scary line up, and I think that being home, he would give a Dodger effort. As for Matsui, I mentioned at the end of the season that I thought Matsui to S.F. as part of a package to get Rowand would work. The Asian contingient would love him ( putting fannies in the seats ), his bat would take some of the sting out of losing Rowand, and if the Yanks could get J. Sanchez back, they could plug him into the #4 slot. The guy has a ton of talent. Even Valdez would be a sweet pick up. And Rowan was born to play CF in the Bronx.
With Matsui’s contract, I think a more likely scenario would be moving him a the trading deadline, but that’s providing they are getting enough production from the other OFs.
I understand the Cashman response, and agree with you guys that it was just his way of saying that a Cano deal would have to blow him out of the water. I don’t blame him, I’m a big Cano fan, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him put up big numbers this year. The guy’s got too much talent.
I am a Joba in the rotation fan. You don’t limit his stuff to the bullpen unless you are forced to. Now if he comes up injured again this year, I rethink it.
As far as Duncan, one guy who uses his glove like a trash can lid is enough.
That McClouth clock, well that’s some fancy schmancy gizmo. You would be better served with a sun dial.
I’m sorry I haven’t been around more. Usually this time of the year is consumed with hot stove and the NFL draft. However, with the Birds on the Hat in the big game ( I still can’t get my head around it ), I have been spending time on the football sights.
For what it’s worth, they are still cleaning up after the carnage I inflicted on the Philly forums. It wasn’t pretty, although I enjoyed it.
Sun dial…don’t be pushing your greeny energy solutions on my blog!!! kidding.
I knew it wasn’t true. Shelley is a lifetime AAA hero. Sorry to doubt.
What’s Joba’s inning limit this year? If it’s below 150, he’ll be in the rotation and the pen.
Louie, I remember you pushing Rowand out there last year. It would be a more than acceptable fit. But, I think our CF for the next couple of years is on the team already.
“best infield of all-time” health, health, health
I have always thought that any Matsui deal would have to be to a west coast team.I just dont think anybody will take him at 13 per coming off an injury.
You are right that he is an easier move at the deadline, provided he is producing. But at that point why trade him if he is producing.Unless Gardner or Melky have taken hold of CF and Jackson is ready for a promotion, allowing Damon to slide into the DH role.
I completely agree that if Joba has any arm issues,as a starter, this season you really have to look at a move back to the pen.I obviously hope this doesnt happen.I would love to see a CC, Joba, Wang a healthy AJ and a potential fulfilled Hughes in the rotation for the next 5 years.Young avg. age and loads of potential.
AND yea, yea, yea….congrats on your Cards.
I concur…from L to R
HEALTH HEALTH GET YOU HEAD OUTTA YOUR ASS HEALTH
And I would say Joba has a ceiling of right around 150 this year. Gotta take a look at what he had in AAA.I cant imagine they want to bump him by more than 30, I think thats the Verducci effect #.
I don’t follow football anymore. still love the game as I grew up with it – basically a bastardization of rugby and football, like all kids should play on the playground. I can appreciate great play but I can’t follow it on TV for too long. I did catch the Giants superbowl last year, which just about the best football game [for NY] that I’ve ever seen.
Fiber is essential for health. Put them all on a tablespoon of psyllium husks, stirred into a glass of water, per day. Fiber Fiber Fiber
He threw 108 last year.I would say between 130 and 150 is where they would like to get him.If that puts him in the pen in Sept., so be it.There will be points where you can skip Hughes or Joba throughout the season. If everybody stays healthy this is gonna be sick. This team is a fuckin powerhouse with or without Manny.
As far as my football Cardinals, I’ve waited patiently my whole life for this. The team has been a punchline, except for a couple years in the mid 70′s.
As for that witches brew tou conjured up, Libby, you could take a crap on pavement, and it would stand up.
Lib, we’ve been having an ongoing dabate on the WBC, and the scenario that we’ve come up with is to hold it right after the W.S., as opposed to before the season.
Kind Bud would get his exposure, the players would still be in playing shape, and the MLB Network ( which you must love, by the way ) could carry any Sunday games. I’m curious as to your take, because we all know it’s not going away.
jrz, do I sense a tinge of resentment in that Cardinal reference ? Good ! LOL
Lib, speaking of Pagan, a casual football fan ? Reminds me of this line… ” And you, Mrs. Magillicutty, at your age, should be ashamed of yourself ! ” Guess who ?
Powerhouse.
Yea, you sense resentment and you are entitled to gloat.Have at it.I am a big Cardinal fan in 2 weeks.I might just go to the SB.Havent even looked into what a ticket is going for.Even just going and tailgating on the south side of the stadium, where you can watch on the huge screen might be a good time.
They are bringing in dancers from all over the country right now to stock the titty bars for the extravaganza. This is a good time to be livin in Tampa boys.
And yea I said POWERHOUSE.If these boys stay healthy and play to their potential, they are unfadeable!
Hey JRZ, bring your camera to the titty bar, too.
Lou, I didn’t mean “casual”. I meant “abstaining” or at best “marginal”. The first organized football game I played, with helmets and plays and coaches, was in high school. I lost interest in it, because it wasn’t the way I played the game growing up. fukkit what difference does it make anyway.
I think the WBC can go away…I hope the WBC can go away. I think a lot of things we take for granted as bulletproof in our society will fall by the wayside, especially if the money doesn’t roll in. I heard a lot of big money advertisers already dropped out of the WBC. I can assure you all that WB Mason will not put a placard on some glorified sandlot in DR so that a handful of dirtpoor Cubans can have “brand awareness”. Outside of Coke, Pepsi, Sony, Nike, and Adidas, who’s left?
Personally I don’t care about the outcome of Panama versus Korea. I don’t care if Cuba wins “global bragging rights”.
Regarding Cuba, I saw an interesting thing today. A man was being arrested by the Military Police; probably an urban guerrilla. Rather than be taken alive, he exploded a grenade hidden
in his jacket, taking the command vehicle with him. It occurred to me: the police are paid to fight, and the Rebels are not.
What does that tell you?
and you forgot Bud and Miller
So, that occurred to me.
All the Hyman Roths in the League office can’t sell me on effectively extending pro baseball into the tropical nether regions. Ain’t happening. The business climate is too unpredictable.
Bud isn’t an American company anymore, so I’m sure that in the near future their advertising contracts will be made – how do you say – more Eurocentric. And the Europeans, from Bulgaria to Britain, just don’t get baseball. No more Bud Bowl, no more Bud Light, no more Bud Girls, no more inspiring visions of Clydesdales. POOF. Thought it was bulletproof? It ain’t.
Global sponsors are dropping like flies:
http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/126488
…with their places taken by more local sponsors like Asahi beer in Asia and Presidente in LATAM.
I had Presidente in DR, it smelt like the ass of the corn.
Never had Asahi.
Meanwhile, the VPs are saying that total sponsorship is up. I wouldn’t want a job accounting for their reports. Those must be “intangible” ad contracts.
Get this – a google search of “WBC Sponsors” yields more hits to the World Barista Championship than the baseball event.
My quote was Ralph Cramden, your’s M. Corleone.
Some of my favorite days at the DN were the off kilter ones ( for some reason, usually Friday ), where we would go off on the movie quotes, plugging in our own dialogue.
Some days I almost pissed my pants. What made them even funnier was the ” cafe in London, circa 1940 ” moments, where our irreverant back and forths were completely ignored by a few self important posters. Hence, the bombs exploding all around, as those pre-ordained posters ignored us. Good times !
jrz, Cardinal fans NEVER gloat, at least this one. I know the drill all too well. Anyway, I’m jealous that you might attend the game. And of course, jealous of the opportunity of talking to a young lady’s quim as she hangs from a pole. Definitely bring the camera phone.
Back to the WBC, I’m not a fan, but like I said before, it’s not going anywhere, so might as well speculate on a way to make it viable. As for after the season, at least if someone gets hurt, having it in November is better than March.
Speaking of the DN threads, has anyone heard from BR2 ? We exchange pleasantries a few times a month, and the DN thread wasn’t the same after he got the gate.
BR2 lost his mind too????What the hell happened while I was living in the sticks?
BR2, chanchis, all good guys, I have barely seen them but I wish that was different…I’m thinking of taking the “must login to comment” filter off the blog, just to draw some walk-ins off the net, for better or worse. I am happy with this being a private club but I have to keep up appearances.
I think this is the WBC’s final installment, probably contracted and paid for since before the markets went bust. It’s too much risk. I believe Jeets got pegged in the wrists twice in the WBC. How much more can a Yankee fan take?
Babe didn’t go Gandil. They just booted him, probably for obscene content. He wouldn’t have that problem here.
Jeff Kent is retiring.
If you guys want BR2′s e-mail, and don’t already have it, I could check with him, and get it for you. I’m sure he would probably welcome it. I got it from gene.
That’s another thing that sucks about the DN forum format. Most sports venues allow for you to P.M. ( private message ) other posters. Still can’t believe a N.Y. paper uses a 3rd grade format.
Back to the WBC, I wouldn’t miss it one bit. The nightmare of #5 going down for the season scares the shit out of me.
Kent was a great hitter, but a bigger asshole ( if you go by what dozens of players and coaches say ). The fact that someone ratted him out to the FO about his ” I was washing my truck ” motorcycle crash says it all.
http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/columns/story?columnist=law_keith&id=3848691&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fmlb%2finsider%2fcolumns%2fstory%3fcolumnist%3dlaw_keith%26id%3d3848691……….its a link to a ranking of farm systems from off of traderumors.I havent read it yet, all I know is Texas is ranked 1.
jrz, was that you with that last comment [I jsut deleted it] or do I have a serial doucheblogger? Because I’ve had serial douchebloggers in here.
