Yanks winMets win.
Andy Pettitte had seven strikeouts versus a Jays lineup short Vernon Wells.  Mark Teixeira walked point, driving in the first and second Yankee runs.  Marte to Veras to WarRam closed it out. Today, it’s Joba Chamberlain versus the Reds.  Look out, Jonny Gomes.
Ollie Perez got his head together for six innings-plus of one-run ball.  Dan Murphy was again a catalyst; yesterday it was with a game-tying home run in the fourth inning.  J.J. Poo and Bobby Parnell closed out an all-around excellent pitched game.  Seeing quite a few games decided this spring on errors – in the field or on solitary pitches left up in the zone. Today, it’s John Maine versus the Marlins.
This month it’s a tie between Keith… (more…)

Yanks winMets lose.
Yanks won a sloppy one.  A.J. Burnett has earned a mulligan.  The bats all contributed, every spot in the order had a hit, run, or RBI except catcher.  Robbie Cano went yard for the third time this spring.  Brett Gardner, BBT favorite, is finally named the Opening Day centerfielder.  Today, it’s Andy Pettite vs. Toronto.
Mike Pelfrey didn’t get out of the first inning of a rainy one, Jerry Manuel pulled the starters after an hour rain delay.  B-Squad left 19 runners on.  A forgettable day.  Today, it’s Oliver Perez against the Orioles.

Yanks winMets win.
Yankee pitchers let up only two earned runs.  Brett Tomko bounces back from bad news.  Xavier Nady was 3-for-4 batting between Mark Teixeira and Robbie Cano, who both homered.  Robbie Cano otherwise left five on base.  Melky Cabrera had three hits – our own Ollie Perez.  Today, it’s A.J. Burnett versus the rrrrr Pirates.
Every Met except David Wright and Carlos Beltran had a hit, and six pitchers took the hill to combine for the win.  T-E-A-M.  Jose Reyes was in the middle of it all with a two-run single.  Today, it’s Mike Pelfrey versus the Orioles.  Shoe will be watching.  Elmer Dessens is 37 years old.

Yanks winMets win.
Yanks squeaked out four runs on three hits and two Reds errors.  CC Sabathia went 7 2/3 with seven strikeouts.  Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera did the rest.  Mo looks so happy, doesn’t he?  Can I amend my bet on how many games CC wins?  Cody Ransom and Brett Gardner have combined for nine stolen bases this spring.  Mark Teixeira had two hits.
Mets had the regulars all in – finally.  Dan Murphy welcomed them back by showing them up.  Johan Santana killed the Dunn-less Nats six strikeouts and one run over seven innings.  Francisco Rodriguez got through his inning, stranded two.  Today, it’s rookie Dillon Gee versus the Marlins.  About a week to go in the season.

Yanks winMets win.
Joba Chamberlain got carjacked by Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, but managed to gut through 4 1/3 innings, giving up only those two earned runs.  Mama said there’d be days like this.  The bullpen took care of the rest.  Derek Jeter had a steal.  Johnny Damon got caught.  Hideki Matsui went yard and so did Cody Ransom.  Later on, Nick Swisher and Melky Cabrera piled on a couple more.  Yanks had twelve hits in total.
Check out Joe Janish’s review of Torre’s The Yankee Years.
Mets and the Cards duked it out with 80% A Squads.  Mets knocked in nine runs on thirteen hits.  Maine was charged with one earned run over five innings.  Bigga Napoleon says Lou’s Wainwright put… (more…)

Mets lose.
Ollie Perez walked six batters on his way to giving up six runs in 3 2/3 innings.  Ralph Kiner said it best, “if Ollie was pitching to make the team, he wouldn’t be making it.”  More talk of delivery changes in the booth, this time it’s Ollie changing for the Classic, can’t be a good thing.  Dan Warthen doesn’t see any arm strength.  Jerry Manuel didn’t seem to think his 27-year-old, $36M “pillar” needed “monitoring” until now.  The Mets outslugged the Tigers to the tune of 13 hits to 12 with a lineup boasting nearly every regular – David Wright did not play.  The Tigers fielded a B-squad.  Ron Villone was a rough spot in the otherwise solid bullpen effort.  Dessens, Parnell, and Stokes… (more…)

Yanks winMets lose.
A.J. Burnett had a solid outing, 5+ IPs, one run and four strikeouts while inducing nine ground ball outs to three air outs.  I don’t say “great outing” because the cream of the Boston lineup did not play for some odd reason.  Derek Jeter was in the lineup – has everyone else in the Classic lost their luggage on the flight home?  Brett Gardner tripled, scored on Jeter’s ground ball to second.  Speed.  Austin Jackson broke open the 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with a grand slam.  Power.  Mariano Rivera pitched an inning and struck out two.  Victory.  Yanks have off today and pick up Thursday with Joba Chamberlain versus the Phillies.
Mike Pelfrey got knocked around a little bit for… (more…)

Chien-Ming Wang, Brian Bruney, and Dan Giese threw BP to the Phillies yesterday.   Miguel Cairo -you remember Miguel – had a home run for Philly.  Nobody got injured.  Derek Jeter is on a plane home.  Reports confirm that Alex Rodriguez is heterosexual.  Tonight it’s A.J. Burnett versus Tim Wakefield.

It had to happen sooner or later.  I won’t blame anyone here for the jinx.  Big David Price shut it down for four innings, then handed it over to the bullpen who shut it down for five more.  Jason Isringhausen was with the Rays?  Who knew.  Brett Gardner finally got caught stealing.  Igawa was brilliant.  Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher were 0-for-5 in the meat of the order.  I’ll have the fish.  Austin Jackson was in the mix.  Robbie Cano had two hits. Today it’s Brett Tomko versus Jamie Moyer.
Johan Santana claimed the game from Jair Jurrjens.  Johan had it for seven strikeouts in five innings, giving up a run on two hits and two walks.  The nice little pitching match… (more…)

Joba Chamberlain gave up a run in three and a third innings, striking out five.  I’ll take it.  Mo had stuff.  Edwar didn’t.  Phil Hughes got cut today, but he’ll be back.  Matsui, Cano, and Nady took the collar in the fourth, fifth, and sixth lineup spots.  Cabrera and Gardner had three hits splitting up the leadoff spot.
John Maine, Ron Villone, and Nelson Figueroa got lit up.  Mets had eight baserunners the whole day.  No Carloses were sighted, though, perhaps it’s the calm before the storm.  Trying to be positive.
Think you got stuff?  You ain’t:

Yankees winMets win.
Phil Hughes aka The Sixth Man pitched 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball, and just a couple of pitches short of no-run outing.  Mark Teixeira hit his first home run of the spring.  Brett Gardner went 1-for-3 and of course, added a stolen base.  Austin Jackson had four at-bats and bashed a late-inning home run.  He’s my boy in 2010, the year we make contact.  David Robertson, 1.1 innings with 3 K’s.  Another guy I want to see in 2010, just in time to combat a young surging Baltimore Oriole crew.  Tomorrow, it’s Joba Chamberlain versus the Tigers.
