Yankee Stadium Opening Night – Pictures from the Exhibition

The air is way different in the new stadium.  I’ve seen the light, especially after Hideki Matsui’s home run that would have went foul in the Cathedral.  Anyway, some more snapshots of the new Stadium:

  1. When does the Jeter watch start?

  2. I gave up watching The Final Four and North Carolina last night, so I could go to my first Bullets game. We lost to The Miami Heat, and our record stands at 18-60. YOU KNOW that you are a DIE-HARD FAN when you give up The Final Four and The Tar Heels to go watch a team with a record of 18-59………….
    COLTS!
    ORIOLES!
    BULLETS!

  5. It was great to see BOTH Big East teams go down. If thye both had won, we would never hear the end of it.

  7. Sorry JRZ, I couldn’t watch the game. I was too busy going to my see my beloved Washington Bullets at The Verizon Center.

    coltsoriolesbullet April 5, 2009 at 9:52 am
  8. Pena is the wrong move because it was only sure to get the headlines that you got in the NY papers the day before the season starts. For a guy who was actually part of the media for a bit, Girardi sure is a lightweight when it comes to managing it.

  9. Berroa should be on this team and Pena should be getting ABs in SWB

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 9:54 am
  10. And for the record, I may or may not see tomorrow night’s game. The Orioles-Yankees opening day game was pushed back to 4:05 PM.
And it is NOT just because they are opening with The Yankees. If The Orioles were opening against The Pawtucket Red Sox, I would still sacrifice the National Title game, with or without my Tar Heels…….. DIE-HARD FAN!!!

  13. I won a Nick Markakis autographed ball at Oriole Fan Fest yesterday, before I went to Washington to see The Bullets-Heat game. The trivia question? What was the date of The Orioles’ first win at Oriole Park in Camden Yards?
I raised my hand, I guessed “April 6th, 1992″, and I won it!

    coltsoriolesbullet April 5, 2009 at 9:57 am
  14. JRZ: My cousins live one hour from Baltimore, so I may get to watch most of it. However, there may be traffic, so it might take longer. Yesterday’s traffic was AWFUL, because they had four major events in the same day……. Oriole Fan Fest in Baltimore, The “Cherry Blossom Ten -Mile Run” in Washington, The Bullets-Heat game in Washington, and The Orioles-Nationals exhibition game in Baltimore. UGH!

    coltsoriolesbullet April 5, 2009 at 10:00 am
  15. OH, thats right, you arent going back to Brewster are ya?The game should be over by 8:30, no matter what you will see the 2nd 1/2

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:01 am
  16. morning j lev and joe.. Pena will only be here until Arod gets back, then he’ll be back down. word is he’s a much better glove, F it, why not reward the kids. totally understand your concept, but he’ll be getting his ab’s in 4 or 5 weeks, getting a taste of the bigs can’t hurt to bad in that short period. somebody will want Berroa. later

  17. The O’s fans at the stadium were great, but most fans on The Baltimore Sun are full of contempt for die-hard fans like myself…
You know, you get all fo the “experts” typring at their computer, thinking that they can do a better job than Andy MacPhail, and blaming Peter Angelos for both the 1929 stock market crash, and our current recession.

    coltsoriolesbullet April 5, 2009 at 10:06 am
  18. jrz, I haven’t heard what they’re doing with Berroa (SWB or released?), but I did see where Pena is here only till Al gets back. At which point, I suppose, he”l be getting those ABs at SWB. Question then becomes, who’s gonna keep Ransom company as backup IF when Pena is sent down?

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:07 am
  19. Whatta ya say Sal, I guess maybe it is the glove thats got him hangin around.Ransom is a much better defensive 3rd baseman than I thought. This team will be fine until Big Al gets back. The pitching can carry them for stretches, its nice that they wont have to though.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:10 am
  20. I think ransom will be it.Big Al comes back and Pena goes to SWB.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:13 am
  21. Cody Ransom… “Top O’ The world, Ma!”

    coltsoriolesbullet April 5, 2009 at 10:14 am
  22. By any chance, is mini-Mike Lupica the editor-in-chief at espn.com?

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:14 am
  23. ONE backup IFer? They should trade Melky for another one … or talk Berroa into hanging around till Al gets back … or BOTH!

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:17 am
  24. Ransom can play 2B 3B and SS, Swisher can play 1st and Pena is only a call away if someone cant play.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:18 am
  25. I have a confession to make, fellas. Everytime I glance at that headline, “Teixeira marks his spot in new park,” I picture him lifting a leg and doing exactly that. I think I need therapy.

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:19 am
  26. jrz, all right all right, ya twisted my arm on the backup infielder thing … BUT HOW ABOUT WE TRADE MELKY ANYWAY?

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:21 am
  27. Mike Lupica once called Rodney McCray a scrub. RODNEY McCRAY! One of the greatest players ever out of Mount Vernon High School, led Louisville to a National Championship as Freshman in College, and had a long NBA career!

    coltsoriolesbullet April 5, 2009 at 10:23 am
  28. native—Melky did not play well at all last year and was justifiably demoted to Scranton. However, he hit .333 there and .462 in limited play when he was recalled. In winter ball he hit .312. This year’s spring training performance was outstanding. Melky is 24 years old. Take a look at his first 2 years in New York. They were very respectable. I want to believe that Melky got a “wake-up” call just the way Cano did. Why do you want him gone? The jury is still way way out on him. Right now–Swisher or Melky? Not even close. I am not even half sold on Gardner the way many of you guys are here.

  29. I think they will let a bit of a competition go on for the 1st month.Gardner will get more PT but Cabrera will be a safety net.Gardner hit .228 in 125 ABs or something like that.Cabrera has hit .280 in a full season before.Dont be so sure that Melky doesnt end up getting some playing time.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:24 am
  30. noogs, what’s goin on, dude??? On Melky, I’m thinking (like others) that the Yankees now have two “fourth” outfielders. If it were up to me, I would keep The Melk Man and trade Swish. And I honestly think the Yankees have the same preference. Problem is that a 24-year-old CFer with 3 years Major League experience making about $400K per year is a lot more tradeable than Swish and his heavy contract, coming off a sub-par year. BTW, I’m sold on Gardner.

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:29 am
  31. Noogs, ya beat me to it.Seriously, I have defended Melky(ALL last year) and been critical of him(SINCE last year) but you cant deny that he has shown that he can be an everyday player.I think Girardi has to play the guy that is giving him the best chance to win. That being said, the CFer pretty much living in the 9 hole of the lineup bodes well for Gardner to get more time.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:30 am
  32. morning Nat…Yogi Berroa has a non roster contract. Non-roster invitees are always under some type of contract for insurance reasons, as teams would risk incurring liability if an unsigned player were injured at their facility. Not sure what’s up with him

congrats to the Heels J and joe. I’m gonna insure you a victory boys, I’m picking Izzo’s guys to win it all. You have the better players by far, but Izzo has taken every team he’s faced in the tourney out of their rhythm, best rebounding team in the country I believe, and tuff as nails, plus home court advantage. Detroit needs this victory for moral purposes.

  33. Melky is making over a million per. Gardner’s swing still looks horrible to me. We’ll have to agree to disagree on him. Time will tell–I think he’ll bunt well, get some infield hits, but still, for the most part, have the bat knocked out of his hands by good major league pitchers. I’ll be the first to tell you I was wrong if I am.

  34. The game is no slam dunk Sally but I like my Heels…79-71

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:33 am
  35. Just for the record, noogs, Melky HAD the job for 3 seasons, and lost it on merit, by playing with a sense of entitlement IMO. And it pissed me off to no end remembering that this was the guy for whom we waved adios to a warrior like Bernie for. I mention this only because he’s gonna have to show me a lot more than ST numbers to undo three straight seasons of driving in reverse.

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:34 am
  36. Even though we lost to The Miami Heat last night, in our previous game, we beat The Cleveland Cavaliers, and ended their 13-game winning streak. GO BULLETS!

    coltsoriolesbullet April 5, 2009 at 10:34 am
  37. Joe, when you go to the game tomorrow, take the cash outta the velcro Os wallet and put it in your sock.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:36 am
  38. I stand corrected on the salary, but the point about tradeability still holds.

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:37 am
  39. native–Melky had one bad year and an entitled attitude that went with it. I would never deny that. However, go take a look at his first two–they were pretty darned good. I’ll make my point again–he didn’t mope when he went to Scranton–he made the best of it. He then returned to NY in September and did well. He did very well in winter ball. He skipped the WBC to compete for the center field job. Native, it’s much more than doing well just in Spring Training. He’s still a very young guy. Joe Torre heaped a ton of praise on Melky in his book. Said that he was always in the middle of something good happening for two years. I hope he gets another shot.

  40. noogsie whats up! go get em J.. you have the better team. Nat the yanks gave berroa $550 grand for the audition, not sure what happens now

  41. hey jorge threw out a runner. I’m still rooting for melky, I like Gardy also, he will get the bat knocked out of his hand, but he’s a pain in the neck with that speed of his, we saw that yesterday again when he laid down that bunt and all hell broke loose on the Cubs D

  42. Sally–how’s it going? I respect everyone’s opinion, but you know that I sometimes find myself coloring outside the lines every now and then. Can’t help it–it’s my nature, but I respect the hell out of all of you guys. I can’t wait for the season to start and the arms that we have right now are incredible. i can’t wait to see my first game at the Stadium–have tickets for Sat. 5/2 against the Angels. Cap Day! good to see you Sally.

  43. The fact that the Yankee CFer will hit 9th makes Gardner the better option but Melky will get enough PT to either show he can play for the Yankees or make himself worth more in trade.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:48 am
  44. Predictions for the Yankees opening day 2010 OF?

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:49 am
  45. Melky has shown he can hit .280 and play good defense in CF with an above-average arm. Brett has yet to show anything at the M.L. level and he doesn’t have Melky’s arm, but he can cover ground, and he adds speed on the basepaths, something sorely missing. If he can hit .260-.270 and have a .330 OBA, he’s the man for the job this season, and could even develop into the next leadoff hitter for the team.

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:50 am
  46. Another wild card is Damon–he hasn’t exactly been the picture of health the last few years. If Johnny goes down again when he decides to take on the left field wall one more time, Melky could slot in there as well. Johnny is about as old as Manny Ramirez, without looking it up, I believe.

  47. noogs, you were on an absolute roll on Melky … till you got to the part where Torre endorsed him.

    nativenyer2009 April 5, 2009 at 10:52 am
  48. I think Damon is 34

    jrzinbatonrouge April 5, 2009 at 10:52 am
  49. Melky’s on base percentage has been as high as .360.

  50. 35 sorry.
