CC Sabathia is being paid $161 million.  He ought to have found his rhythm already.  Bring back A-Rod, we needed just five more runs.  Derek Jeter had three hits.  Baltimore had its revenge.   Shoe slept peacefully for the first time in ages.

Last night was a little bit of karmic payback.

Last night was a little bit of karmic payback. That's OK (in April).

Mets showed the formula, Johan Santana + timely runs + solid bullpen = success.  Happy April, Metsies.  Not much more you can want out of a game than a Dan Murphy home run, seven strikeouts from your ace, and a pen that holds a one-run lead.

  2. Can anyone confirm if Joba got that shirt at the local big boys store in Nebraska? Husky section at a Walmart maybe?

  3. He looks like a member of Menudo in that shirt.

  4. Kev, I didnt read the posts about the video on TDN yet but if one of the haters didnt make a “stripes” reference I will be further disappointed in the quality of Yankee haters that post on the DN.

  5. RAB- lol

Mac- The Steinbrenners wanted him back especially after he came back “begging”. The YES Net ownership conflicted with the team and YES won out. Cashman was more than happy to be rid of him. That’s what happens when you own the network that your team is on with “partners”.

  6. I didnt read much about the way the Big Al deal went down, because it made me sick, and only know what I heard casually.I knew that it had to do with asses in the seats but didnt put together the YES angle.Jesus, think about the advertising monies to be had with him chasing that record.People can say all they want that the record wont count but I gotta say, I didnt see too many empty seats out in SF when Barry was chasing it.Nicely done Levi.

  7. Oh, yeah, jrz. Goldman had a 40% share in YES. They were the ones that called Levine and worked out the contract with the HR incentives. Once the deal was done they put their share up for sale. Infuriating.

  8. Well J- Mac and I have talked about this Goldman angle before. When you become an Octopus like the Yanks are now sometimes one tentacle doesn’t agree with what the other tentacle is doing.

Yankees and Mets are still peddling opening day tickets:

  9. How does buffet tie into goldman, or does he? Remember you geniuses, I am an Ironworker.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 7, 2009 at 5:30 pm
  10. It’s interesting that the banker who brokered the deal is a buddy of A Rod’s in Miami. You think they knew that the steroid skeleton was in the closet? I do. Maybe Goldman got the call right by moving to sell at the top of the market in Media or maybe they knew what was coming.

  11. Buffet will use Goldman quite a bit for his banking and he does equity deals with them. Their companies just work together but aren’t tied to each other in any way.

  12. Roids in baseball reminds of the movie “Quiz Show”. A handful of people were outraged that the contestants were actually getting the answers. Ultimately though people still watched the show. Sam thing w/ roid users in MLB…a handful of fans will forever hold the handful of players in contempt, but ultimately the stands will be packed if (and when) A roid approaches Barroid.

  13. Not a whole lotta high finance talk goin on at coffee, BUT I CAN tell you where the coldest beer annd the hottest pussy is in alot of towns.

  14. He also invested about $10b in them too in a preferred deal.

  15. buffet has $10b invested in goldman?

    jrzinbatonrouge April 7, 2009 at 5:36 pm
  16. I would be surprised if they knew about the steroid use, Levi. The whole investment and marketing was based off him breaking the record clean. They might be friends with Alex but I know Goldman guys. If they think there daughter could be an impedement to making coin they will drop her off at the nearest hospital.

  17. Not true-
Buffett and his Berkshire Hathaway invested $5 billion in Goldman preferred shares paying 10% dividends in Sept. 08 a week after Lehman Brothers collapsed. He also received warrants to buy $5 billion worth of stock at a 115 share strike pricefor the next 5 years. Berkshire Hathaway has a big involvement with them now.

  18. Sorry, it was $5b. Happened right after things went nuts in September.

  19. Hello BBT, is this where the draft is being held, or is it on the ” cover it live ” site ?

  20. I guess the other one Lou.I think 7:00

    jrzinbatonrouge April 7, 2009 at 5:43 pm
  21. has it ever been established who dropped the dime on A Rod to Roberts?

  22. P.S. Do you have enough players ? The Roost league never materialized, and there’s one guy that didn’t join any other leagues because of the supposed Roost league, and he is pretty bummed.

  23. Radomski swore up and down that it was players and he knew who they were, for what it is worth.

  24. Gotta talk to the guys in a bit Lou.We got 6 right now and drafted 6 rounds.I like my picks so far but if its all right with the gang I will start fresh, BUT only because its you, ya Deadhead.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 7, 2009 at 5:47 pm
  25. I am cool with that. Yeah, Levi, I know about the investment but I think J was asking if Buffet was tied to GS in the Alex deal. Back then they just worked together in equity deals and banking relationships.

  26. mac I think it may have been his ex.

  27. j, you mean that list of guys I saw are already drafted ?

  28. Yeah, Sup, she has to be one of the four.

  29. When you guys said goldman, like I said I just know what I heard casually back then, and remembered the buffet stuff.I didnt know if buffet owns goldman or nothin.Like I said Ironworker.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 7, 2009 at 5:53 pm
  30. Lou, yeah, we drafted 6 rounds last night.I got no problem starting from scratch if nobody else does.I gotta run to the grocery store, see you guys before 7.

  31. I think of OJ when I hear Goldman. Poor bastard.

  32. You are right about those guys Mac.

I don’t think they ever unloaded their stake in YES though. They missed the market too. The A Rod scandal coupled with the collapsed in Media will make it hard to unload it at the premium they could have had at the top of the market when they originally talked about unloading their 30-35% stake.

  33. j, speaking of da Dead, here’s my sig on several other sites.
    http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo133/spiritofstlouis/thgreatfuldead.jpg

  34. It was too big a stake to unload even at the height of the bubble, Levi. I think they were hoping the Alex deal would make it easier but the team missing the playoffs and having a bad year dashed that. Then the whole world went to hell.

  35. Goldman’s stock was down 50% when Buffett made the deal and the common stock went down a lot more from there, but the preferred stock pays him 10% so he collects $500 million per in dividends while he waits for the warrants to be in the money.

Yes was valued at about $3 billion so Goldman’s stake was “only” valued at $1 billion. The price wasn’t the issue, control was the issue. There were plenty of interested buyers from private equity guys Blackstone and Quadrangle Group (Ratner the “CAR Czar”) to the cable companies. The Steinbrenners didn’t want to sell and it made the stake a lot less attractive to potential buyers.

  36. From what I remember of it, the $3b evaluation was seen as high and buyers were balking at the price, especially if the Steinbrenners were not going to sell their stake. Goldman’s share was a pretty big ticket at that evaluation. Growth was the biggest concern ove the long haul. YES exploded upon inception but there were doubts if that growth could be sustained. The deal with Alex would have set in future growth opportunity selling ads during his HR chase. Then that went poof, along with the Yanks playoffs, and the rest of the market.

  37. I’ll agree that the buyers balked at valuation. I thought you meant that the stake was too big to swallow when that was at the height of the private equity bubble. That was merely an hors d’oeuvre.
