WP – Burnett (1-0)     LP – Simon (0-1)

The Yankees saved a little face today against the Orioles, sparked by Nick Swisher’s enthusiastic slugging and a strong debut from #3 starter A.J. Burnett.  The Orioles take the series 2-1.

Baltimore starter Alfredo Simon (in only his second Major League start) was impressive through the first three innings, retiring the first six batters in order.  The Yanks threatened in the third with a one-out slap single from Brett Gardner and a seven-pitch walk issued to Jose Molina, but Simon retired Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon on ground balls to end the inning, stranding the runners on second and third.

A.J. Burnett had struck out three of the first six batters before the Orioles attacked in the bottom of the third.  Felix Pie led off with a single and stole second base two pitches later.  Chad Moeller singled off the glove of Robinson Cano, leaving runners at the corners with no outs.  Burnett then struck Cesar Izturis out looking on three pitches.  Brian Roberts responded by lacing a single to center, scoring Pie.  After an Adam Jones flyout, Burnett loaded the bases with a walk to Nick Markakis, bringing up Aubrey Huff with the bases loaded and two outs.  A.J. snuffed Huff swinging at a big 3-2 curve, pumping his fist on the way back to the dugout.

The Yankees entered the top of the fourth with a new charge.  Mark Teixeira, who had stranded eight runners in the previous two losses to the O’s, jumped on the first offering from Simon and launched a solo shot to deep center field to tie the game at 1-1.  After a walk was issued to Cano, Nick Swisher (who earned the start after doubling and walking as a pinch-hitter the previous two nights) homered to right field on a 3-2 pitch.  That two-run lead would not be given up.

A.J. Burnett would give up a solo home run by Luke Scott in the fourth inning before exiting the game in the sixth with two runs on seven hits and six strikeouts.  The bullpen shut down the Orioles from then on, with Phil Coke, Jose Veras, Brian Bruney, and Mariano Rivera (who hasn’t got any work in lately) combining for 3 2/3 innings of no-hit ball.

Game Notes

Swisher added an RBI single in the sixth and a two-run double in the ninth, finishing the day with five RBIs.  Robbie Cano had a two-run blast and scored four runs.  Brett Gardner had two hits and a stolen base.

Rookie Ramiro Pena, replacing Johnny Damon in a switch and leading off the ninth inning, got his first hit as a big leaguer, eliciting warm applause from his teammates gathering at the top step of the dugout.

The Yanks fly out to Kansas City to face the Royals for a three-game set.

Oliver Perez gave up all eight runs to Cincinnati (1-2) as the Mets (2-1) drop the last game of the series.  Reds pitchers, led by high-stepping Bronson Arroyo, managed to contain the hard hitting lineup to six runs on ten hits.  Ryan Church’s two doubles were the only extra base hits for the Mets.

Today, it’s John Maine versus Anibel Sanchez down in Florida.

  2. I liked Nady going in hard to break up the DP with a 6-0 lead.

Gardner has had some good at bats tonight with nothing to show for it. He’s due to break out.

  3. He’s a Clydesdale.

  4. Gardner was real nice coming in on that ball before even though he didnt come up with it clean.Thats what I wass talkin about, real good L & R but not so much back.

  5. SHOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! WHERE ARE YOU? HOW’BOUT THEM ORIOLES?????

    nativenyer2009 April 11, 2009 at 9:47 pm
  6. Castillo looked very aggressive at the plate tonight. 3 of his 4 hits were hit hard and a great sac bunt could have been easily scored a hit after a rushed throw. Jerry supposedly had a talk with him today (Imo cutcha perhaps?). Jerry did one thing right in the last 24 hours.

  7. Not a big fan of the #52..I will live, but not diggin it.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 11, 2009 at 9:48 pm
  8. I’m starting to feel for Cody … wish he’d get a hit or two, even cheapies, just so he can relax.

    nativenyer2009 April 11, 2009 at 9:49 pm
  9. He did a good job short hopping that J.

  10. jrz, what problems ya got with CC? That his uni looks like a six-man pinstriped tent out there on the mound?

    nativenyer2009 April 11, 2009 at 9:53 pm
  11. Nat-pin-striped tent-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  12. I didnt think Veras was gonna get that call.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 11, 2009 at 9:54 pm
  13. Did they say what CC’s pitch count was tonight? I missed it.

    nativenyer2009 April 11, 2009 at 9:55 pm
  14. He has them things that stick out along the outside of his thigh like some old time shit.

  15. BTW-Does Ransom know that the season started?

  16. I still believe that we are a year away from a winning season. If our starters don’t go deep into games, it will put a big stress on our bullpen, which is what happened last year. We have one of the best bullpens in The American League, but when you continually trot them out for three and four innings in 8 out of 10 games, they get tired, and sometimes they get injured. One year away from a winning season.

  17. 100-105 I think.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 11, 2009 at 9:57 pm
  18. 108 pitches Nat, 73 strikes.

Can’t be much better than that.

  19. Levi … not one of your pup tents either!

    nativenyer2009 April 11, 2009 at 9:57 pm
  20. Shoe- sounds familiar. Jerry’s kids in the bullpen have had a good month this week.

  21. Yeah Nat- You are getting 6 cots in that tent.

  22. pitches, that is.

Shoe, I really think they can slug themselves to 70+ wins without any pitching and they have some. They could flirt with .500

    jrzinbatonrouge April 11, 2009 at 9:59 pm
  23. I’m with you there J. They could really spoil someone’s season in the East this year.

  24. Girardi really has ALOT of options in the pen.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 11, 2009 at 10:01 pm
  25. Agreed, Lev. I don’t know about the Royals’ rotation, especially with that schlub they ran out there today, but that lineup of theirs is pretty good. They got a guy who hit 32 HRs last year batting seventh? That’s not bad.

  26. LEVI: Yes, Aaron Heilman was the most overworked relief pitcher in the major leagues the last two years. If you look at his pattern, he had streaks where he would pitch really well in eight out of nine appearances, and then have acouple of big busts, which most Met fans got all over him for.

    coltsoriolesbullet April 11, 2009 at 10:03 pm
  27. Cone just said something on YES about that the worst thing a ball player can do about a heckler at the park is answer them back, cause then it gets ten times worse … was that you, jrz?

  28. I liked Heilman Shoe but he needed a change of scenery.

Jerry is going to do it all over again this year. Watch.

  29. Levi … no cots, only sleeping bags and tarps. You bring a cot out in the wild and you are under immediate suspicion.

  30. Trey Hillman looks like a dealer I used to “know” … many moons ago, of course.

  31. You bring a pin-striped tent out in the wild and you’ll be under suspicion.

  32. P.S. I was only talking about the room in that tent.

  33. Shoe, your guys should trade for Heilman. He’s worth a shot in the rotation, no?

  34. Joe, you need a starter? I will give ya Igawa for Weiters.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 11, 2009 at 10:21 pm
  35. Igawa-lol- side hurts

  36. I will go as far as Kennedy but then I want 1 of the “AA” boys also.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 11, 2009 at 10:23 pm
  37. JRZ: I’ve accepted that we won’t win until 2010, and won’t make the post-season until 2011. We aren’t going to make the same mistakes as we have in the past. we are just going to take our lumps, and do it right this time. Patience, and home-grown pitching.

    coltsoriolesbullet April 11, 2009 at 10:28 pm
  38. I don’t know what the deal was with Livan tonight, maybe it was the home cookin’, but whatever it was, he should do more of it. Good, good start tonight.

  39. Shoe … stop saying that. 88 wins, third place.

  40. Hey Joe, I just wanna say that with the way you are dedicated to your teams and the fact that you have taken the time to take your education to the next level I get the impression that you are dedicated to teaching kids and I admire that.

    jrzinbatonrouge April 11, 2009 at 10:33 pm
  41. Where’s Lib? On assignment in Tampa? Did anyone catch the fact that the book coming out about ARod written by the SI babe, the release date has been postponed till May 10. What a coincidence. I bet if he comes back April 30, the books hit the shelves that week.

  42. Good point Nat- I stopped looking at Sports Illustrated 20 years ago. It was bad enough that they sat on the story until Verducci got his attention for the Torre book. But this is just disgusting.

They should merge with The Enquirer.

  43. They just happened to get all their “fact checking” done when the Torre/Verducci nonsense was winding down.

A Rod will be back for that second home stand.

  44. Good piece on Mets Today the other day about Maine being a throw-in in the Benson deal.

    http://www.metstoday.com/mets-news/2009/confirmed-maine-was-a-throw-in/

  45. That media hack over at TDN, bullethead bob raissman, actually tries to say that the delay was probably due to more “fact-checking” they needed to do.

  46. I buy no more than one issue of SI per year, if at all. Need I say which one?

  47. That “fact checking” garbage was all over. Considering the book was supposed to be out around now, I guess there is some more of this “fact checking” going on.

I vote a lot with my wallet these days and I choose to keep it closed when it comes time to support SI.

  48. I want to hear what Bill Madam has to say about CC now. He rips after losing his first game and he throws a gem tonight. Madden is a filthy faggot

  49. Nat- With the internet, you can get all the “swimsuit” pictures you want for nothing.

  50. couldnt say it better Babe
