The following is brought to you by Nick Swisher Blogs Inc, a subsidiary of Nick Swisher Baseball Media:
A.J. Burnett is the man. Yanks at .500 going into the rubber match, then will go north to open up the New Stadium.
Xavier Nady had pain last night throwing in from right.
Make sure you catch Jason Giambi using the fourth oldest trick in the book out in Oakland, tripping a hapless Kevin Youkilis over the first base bag and tagging him out. For extra red meat, watch the *priceless* looks on both the umpire’s and firstbase coach’s faces when K-Y whines a protest. Perfectly legal, K-Y. Next time, don’t trip.
Big Kev was at the Masters. Manners, Kev, manners.

Sorry about the dupe-word press issues tonight.
Francona in particular had cause for concern. Much as I hate the Red Sox, I give him a lot of credit for Dice’s 18-3 record last season. Tito had a pretty good feel for when to take him out of a game, and it was always a short leash. How many starters throughout baseball history have won 18 games while pitching only 160-something innings? Tito must have been cringing watching Dice try to blow his arm out in March. BTW, just so you know I’m not drunk, you know who Tito is, right?
I distinctly remember using Tito Francona’s baseball card to make that special clicking noise on my bicycle spokes. And you know that a guy would only use those cards that you had at least 10 copies of. I also used Jeff Torborg’s card.
Yeah I know the Tito reference.
I can’t imagine watching a guy who won 18 games for you, letting it all out in March for a meaningless exhibition and not being able to say when he has had enough.
The only guy who made any sense throughout the whole sordid thing was Pujols. Under other circumstances, he might’ve been called selfish. But in this case, I call him a voice of reason for declining to play.
I don’t know how a guy who wants to be healthy to play for the team that pays him can be called “selfish”? Where I grew up that would be called RESPONSIBLE.
Nationalism and peer pressure make powerful devices for motivation. You and I both know Pujols did the right thing, but I have no doubt that pressure was brought to bear on him from more than one direction. This WBC was a big, big deal for the DR this season, even though it turned out badly for them.
Nat- Have a good one I’m out for the night
I agree that the tactics used to try and make him play were extreme. He did the right thing. MLB is banking on these guys playing because of national pride. The sad thing is that it is all contrived. Not the pride- the tournament.
I’m out. I did routine maintenance on my computer and I’m having problems now with seeing comments right away.
I wanna know why there’s no statue of me on Babe Ruth Plaza???
