Take Wang’s 23 er away and the staff has given up 59 er.
Ex-Wang the team has a 4.78 era which would put them ninth in league era.
They would be behind the Angels who are down 3 starters.

Melky’s .249 MIGHT be more than Gardner’s BA? Gardner will NEVER hit .270? So you guys are sure of something in a game that proves time and time again that you never know. Either one of you two seers pick Tampa for the World Series last year?
Levi–if you eliminate Wang, you should also eliminate Claggett, who is probably in Scranton for the year.
Nooger- preaching to the choir again. I wish some of his defenders were here because I agree wholeheartedly with you.
Tampa had and has talent–all around. Therefore it was possible. Just like the Marlins this year. Gardner –to repeat–has one tool. Out of five.
Lev, so using your same logic and reliance on statistics, the Mets’ team BA with RISP for this season is going to be, what? .215? .220?
Then you should eliminate every team’s worst outing. How about Lester’s 7 run 2 ip stint last time out?
Guthrie’s debacle against the Sux?
Without Claggett the era is still 4.17. When claggett came in, that game was a 5 run game that he turned into a 12 run game in 18 minutes. Why? because Cash hasn’t managed his roster. While they are fooling around with all this talent they have in the system, they look like sh*t in the Bronx.
Nat- First, I am not projecting that into the season. I don’t expect CC,Wang, and Joba to continue as they have in a few starts. What I’m saying is the Yankees can not be satisfied by their pitching so far.
Second, the way the Mets have performed the last 2 years with risp, it would not surprise me to see them hit .220 or .225 this year w/ risp.
Right now, shelley Duncan, who also had a great spring, is tearing up the International League. In all likelihood, he is done as a Yankee and is not on their 40 man roster. Duncan got less of a chance last year than Gardner has had. It’s not even close who I’d rather see come to the plate.
I’m not a stat guy, otherwise I would have just looked at Mo’s and said he is great. He’s done the job but without the velocity. He still has location with the cutter and I’ll take it when he’s throwing 91-92. His velocity is usually 94-95 though. That cutter has a helluva lot more movement with a couple of more mph behind it.
I’ll use stats to back a point though that the problem hasn’t just been Wang.
Levi–I agree with you on poor choices by Yankee management. Berrora, Melancon, Tomko, Duncan–none are on the 40 man roster. Veras can’t go down because he’s got no options left.
Nooger, I have some pathetic stats for you. I know of a pitcher who, in his second year, after stinkin’ out the joint in his rookie season, turned in an ERA over 10.00 for the WHOLE SEASON!!! I mean … The guy absolutely SUCKED. They couldn’t give him away!!! The pitcher’s name was Jake Peavy.
Hey things haven’t gone as planned. Al goes down, Matsui not healthy, Nady gets hurt.
Tomko would be the long man yet he isn’t on the roster and why does he have 2 saves in Scranton? Is he closing? It looks that way?
Berroa should be playing third right now after the Ransom experiment failed- not on the roster.
Melancon is untouchable according to everyone yet isn’t on the 40 man yet.
When Al comes back and Ransom gets dfa’d who comes up?
Native–we’re back to square one. Koufax also sucked for a long time before he got great. The main difference, which you refuse to acknowledge, is that Gardner has very, very limited talent. He doesn’t hit for average, has no power, can’t throw, and is barely an average fly chaser in second. He runs–so did Herb Washington–remember him? That’s who you should compare Gardner to, not Peavey. From day one, guys like Peavey and Koufax had great raw ability.
You are kidding on Peavy right Nat? I’m not even going to look that one up because I know it isn’t true.
Levi–so much is in flux right now. Who knows if Matsui is active by June? Damon? He really looks like he’s in a sharp decline right now. I’m guessing that the Yankees swing a trade for a bona fide and productive outfielder before too long. Money aside, think they wish they had Abreu right now?
Levi, no joke on Peavy. Also look up Oswalt early in his career, with an ERA around 6 or 7. And as nooger alludes, Koufax was an awful 46-50 in his first 6 seasons, even though he pitched for TWO World Champs. What did Roberto Clemente hit as a rookie? .255?
At least Abreu hit. Jermaine Dye already looks good in pinstripes, just put him in the right ones.
I’m not going to argue any longer about this Native. when you throw the name Roberto Clemente into any comparative discussion with Brett Gardner, it’s time for me to hit the hay. Keep dreaming about your boy.
Peavy was 12-11 with a 4.11 era in his second year. He had 82 bb and 156 k in 194 ip. How terrible was he?
If Gardner couldn’t run as fast he does we wouldn’t even know who the hell he is. I’ll be pulling for him at the 2012 Olympics in London.
nooger, what you choose to do, like many sports fans do, is focus on what an athlete CAN’T do. Not me. Gardner has the speed the Yankees need in their lineup, and that speed helps him cover ground in CF. He’s also hungry, something evidently lacking with Melky, until he woke up one morning and found himself in Scranton(THEN he becomes a born-again hustler). The other day I saw Gardner MANUFACTURE a run by drawing a base on balls, stealing second as Jeter struck out, moving to 3rd on the second out, and scoring on a passed ball that was no more than 10 feet away from the plate. When the hell has Melky ever done something like that, or for that matter, ANYTHING special offensively?
Oswalt? He was 14-3 as a rookie with a 2.73 and 19-9 with a 3.01 era in his second year.
Gardner gets to balls with his great speed and doesn’t catch them.
It’s amazing to me that running around the bases is now called “offense”. Maybe he should swing at every 2 strike pitch in the dirt hoping for a passed ball so he could literally steal first.
Gardner will be impressive when he gets a bunt hit a game and hits the ball consistently on the ground to the left side.
I hope he gets the time to learn how to do it.
I stand corrected on the players I named. I’m not very good with names.
Not that I’m old enough to know, but speed has been a part of offense since the days of Ty Cobb.
And Gardner has a lot of improving to do with the bat. Melky will never be anything other than a fourth OFer. Off the top of my head, I don’t think he’d start for many teams.
Speed is a terrific part of an offense but getting on base is the most important part. Gardner’s speed is a terrific weapon if he figures out how to get on base. Fly balls to left field don’t do it. Like I said, I hope he has the time to learn how to hit to the left side on the ground and bunt because he hasn’t shown the ability to do it consistently. He also has to walk more. All I’ve been hearing about is OBP which I hate but when it comes to him and his non-existent one it never comes up. Why is that? Is it because he can run? Again, if he isn’t on base what good is it?
Melky drove in 73 runs 2 years ago Nat and hit .273.
I didn’t like his attitude either last year but didn’t Robinson Cano display the same lousy attitude?
What teams would Gardner be starting on with his .233/.285/.302 career numbers?
Nat- Have a good one, I’m done for the night.
morning fellas
Good discussion on the outfield fellas. Actually the yankee outfield is like day old toast, and I agree probably the worst in all of baseball, but I haven’t done any homework on the matter, it just seems that way. Agreed, Gardner leading off?. I was a Gardner backer, I like the one tool he has, but yes at the end of the day a retooling might/should be necessary. I remember last year saying “when Al gets back from the quad we’ll be fine” but this year I think when they reload their outfield we’ll be ok. maybe
have a great day
Sally–morning–yea, we were agreeing to disagree a little last night. Gardner has one rbi and has stranded men on base at a crazy high percentage. Native loves him and I don’t. Melky hit homers on Friday and Saturday and then was benched on Sunday. I don’t agree with that logic. Native wants to focus on one positive Gardner at bat–and it was great. If we go with one at bat–Aaron Boone has his own Yankeeography.
Aaron Boone has his own “Tankeeography”.
That was a typo and I thought I’d just leave it that way.
Morning men…seeing as how in all likelihood the Yankees will be rained out tonight I only have one thing to say…Let’s Go Rangers!
Bad weather up there? Not so much down here, I have an 11:15 tee time.
Hit’em long J
I agree with Nooger on Gardner.
Imagine Beltran on the Yankees this year?
yup jrz looks like it’s gonna be a washout tonight.
I would rather hit em straight brother. My swing is all EFFED up from the broken ankle.Everything I was doing good when I was playing alot last year is no more…EFFIN shame.
If its a washout I would expect the 1st double header in the new Stadium, gonna look to see if the A’s get back to NY now.
Good point Kev…makes me wish Cashman hadn’t shunned Boras when he came to him before he settled on the Mets for Beltran.
July 25-26 the A’s are back in town so maybe no DH
Hi Levi–I didn’t realize that Boone had ascended to that level of Yankee greatness. After I left last night, Native made the point that Melky has never done anything special offensively. How about a homer Saturday, which without, they probably don’t win? In his book, Joe Torre praises Melky, saying that he always seems to be in the middle of something good happening. You made a good point about how Melky was similar to Cano in terms of attitude. Melky is not as talented as Cano ,but he is light years ahead of Gardner. I’m going to try not to talk about this much any longer because I see that when people start capitalizing their responses, they’re getting really aggravated and taking my critique of a player personally. That’s not fun for me.
Kev— I think Beltran on the Yankees would be awesome. I only hope that Austin Jackson, if he gets here, can do half the things Beltran does.
jrz – let me know if you hear about the DH possibility. In my fanatsy league Id liek to pick up Jack Cust if he is playing 3 games at the new stadium. He likes to grip and rip and might like that RF porch.
Nooger – Yeah. A CF that can flash some leather with moderate power from the left side would be entertaining and productive at the new stadium.
I mentioned Melky’s homer Saturday in the embarrassing blow-out, but should have focused on the Friday Melky homer in a one run win. Eric Wedge was quoted as saying that Melky’s homer was the most impressive of all the Yankee ones that day. I never said that Melky was great. I’m comparing him to what’s there now. Kevin is right–the Yankees should mold the team to what the new stadium gives them. Gardner is defensed like you would a fast guy in a softball game.
Eight minutes for the first replay of the year- all because umpires are lousy at their jobs.
The games aren’t long enough. Instead of calling every checked swing a strike, maybe we could hold pitchers to the 20 second rule and keep batters in the box. I know that would cut down on batting glove tightening time but right now you can go to commercial between some of these pitches.
Maybe the ump took a filet mignon break at the new buffet table for umps in the tunnel.
