WP: Albaladejo (1-0) LP: Lewis (1-2)
The Yanks (7-6) grind out a victory to split the series 2-2 with the Cleveland Indians (4-9), grabbing a fan-assisted victory in yesterday’s action at the New Yankee Stadium.
A.J. Burnett, again being asked to stop a Chien-Ming Wang-induced landslide, dodged, ducked, and weaved his way towards keeping his team in the game for six and a third innings. A.J. smartly opted to pitch around the hot Cleveland bats – which had clubbed eleven home runs and outscored the Yanks 37-12 in the previous three games of the series - by walking seven yet only giving up three runs on three hits.
All three Indian runs came on home runs, a solo shot by Shin-Su Choo to jump out ahead in the second inning and a two-runner from Ryan Garko in the fourth that stretched the Indian lead to 3-0.
The Yanks responded in the bottom of the fourth when Derek Jeter doubled to deep right center and came around on a Mark Teixeira line drive to right field to make the score 3-1.
Burnett and Cleveland starter Carl Pavano – in a glorious return to the Bronx after a heroic stint with the Bombers that is the stuff of legend - battled for two innings more until the Indians threatened in the top of the seventh. A.J. walked the leadoff batter Ryan Garko, whose speedy replacement Trevor Crowe reached second base on a wild pitch. After Burnett induced a ground out from Kelly Shoppach, Crowe again advanced on another wild pitch. A.J. then invoked his inner Dice-K, pitching around and issuing consecutive walks to Asdrubal Cabrera and Grady Sizemore to load the bases solid with one out and 2-3-4 coming up to bat for Cleveland. Jonathan Albaladejo was called in from the Yankee bullpen, which had given up an unspeakable amount of runs the previous games. But Albaladejo escaped the jam, efficiently getting a force out at home via a Mark DeRosa grounder to third and then getting a groundout to second from Victor Martinez to stunt the Indian rally.
Albaladejo’s performance inspired the lineup to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Robbie Cano led off with a double to left and came around to score when Hideki Matsui singled to center. Jensen Lewis was brought in to relieve, and quickly induced a fielder’s choice on a bunt that sat Matsui down and left Cody Ransom on first base with one out. Yankee manager Joe Girardi opted to bring in Jorge Posada to pinch-hit for catcher Jose Molina. On a 1-1 fastball, Posada lofted a deep fly to right field. Crowe, an infielder who entered the game to pinch run for Garko, leapt to the top of the wall and appeared to have brought the ball back into play with a bobble after colliding with some fans reaching for the ball. The umpires paused and ruled it a home run, which brought protest from Indians manager Eric Wedge and sent the umpires to the videotape room to officially review. Upon examining the replay, it was seen from various angles that the ball indeed hit the top of the wall, a homerun, and that the gloves collided in such a way as to not have effected the legal clearing of the ball from the field of play. Yanks went up 4-3 on the two-runner.
Brian Bruney and Mariano Rivera finished out the game for the Yanks. Rivera did not earn the save but got in some regular work, as Cody Ransom piled on some insurance with a bases-clearing double in the eighth that left fielder Choo lost in the sun.
Game Notes
Twenty (20) home runs have been hit out of the New Yankee Stadium in four games. Yankee players commented after the game that the wind was not carrying the baseball out of the park, contrary to previous games, and that weather effects were more similar to the Old Stadium. The New Yankee Stadium has been regarded as a wind tunnel of sorts. Pictures have shown the wind has a tendency to blow left to right, with a “jet stream” heading out to the already short porch in right field.
Today is ex-Yankee great Don Mattingly’s 48th birthday. Happy B-Day, Donnie Baseball!

Lib- Just a clarification- The ball was ruled a home run because Crawford deemed that it hit the fan first beyond the wall before landing on top of the wall and bouncing back into play. If the ball hits the top of the wall and comes back to the field it is live. The fan touching it over the wall first is what made it a HR.

I didnt think it was a home run.
I think the RF walls should be made deeper next year and think its a shame the new stadium is rightfully being dubbed a bandbox.
I dont like “cheap” home runs. That’s just me.
With that said, it’s the same dimensions for every hitter that steps up to the plate.
BTW, Marlins have played the NATS twice already. With their defense and bullpen, I think they will come back down to earth soon.
Is the height of the wall in right the same as in the old stadium? Does it just look shorter because the first row of seats is right on the wall? There have been a couple of balls (Posada’s and Damon’s come to mind) that have just made the first row where the outfielder basically has to wrestle the fan to have any shot just over the wall.
Couldnt they make it where a fan would have trouble interfering with the play since it was designed to play short in the first place? Fan interference is annoying ( has happened at Citi Field down the lines a couple times already)
Kev it has happened at Citi field a couple of times and it is very annoying. I’ve seen fans interfere twice on plays that could have affected the Mets. The announcers say it is a natural reaction of the fans but I don’t agree with that. These stadiums have been designed to have the fans right on top of the field and this has been a negative consequence of that.
I sold all my carrot juice to the Indians before Saturdays game. Indians finally made a good deal.
Thanks Lev, duly noted on the BBD version.
I agree that the fans should best let the game go on unimpeded, but once the foundations of the ballpark are put in place there’s no stopping it.
In the old days they used to let the fans on the field of play, the Polo Grounds could fit as many as 5,000 spectators ringed around the outfield. Balls hit in there would be ruled ground rule doubles or triples. There are precendents to deal with fan interference and it’s a thing that’s come and gone in the game many times. It’s part of the attraction, but personally I agree that the trade off is a less-pure game.
ELBOWS = LEGAL
Francesa starts out ridiculous today. The building, field and seats are in place. He wants corrections while the team is on a road trip? What would they be? Mike–how about you lose 150 pounds before the next homestand?
Thanks for the lead Nooger. I just turned Francesa on. ( BTW, sweet pants on Gay yesterday)
Nooger – Football question…think the jints should trade for Edwards? I do. Would be great if we could get him for a 2 and a 5. Who do you see us drafting at the 29 if we dont make a trade before the pick? ( not sure if you are into the draft or not)
Kevin—saw those pants. Wow. Francesa does crack me up. Maybe in November something is done with the stadium. It is almost impossible to do something now. Stuff like that takes engineeers spending major time there. They are not about to move barriers, pull out seating, or change anything right now.
Kevin–I am into the draft and definitely would like a trade for Edwards. Hard to predict who to pick at #29, but I always like linebackers. I really thought Pierce looked bad the second half of last year. Coughlin will have a quick hook with him.
They won’t do anything about the field, haven’t heard Francesa but this kind of participation is a draw.
Lib–Big Mike wants it done before the next homestand. You are right—the audience will lap this up.
I love Pierces presence out there but he looked like he lost a step he couldnt afford to lose.
I like the USC LB’s. Not sure about the kid from OSU but have read he is a smart player.
Robiskie sounds like a WR Coughlin would like to coach and might be a 2nd rd pick. Grew up in football and is very “yes sir”.
With 10 picks, I cant wait to see what Reese does on Saturday. We will have alot to evaluate next week.
That’s getting old fast.
Maybe they should have Franormous stand in front of the open gaps in left field to cut down on the wind from left to right.
Kev–you know I’m up here in Albany. the Giants train 2 miles from my home. I am there all summer. 10 bucks to park my car for the entire time. You can get close to the scrimmages. When I first saw Jacobs–thought he was a freight train. Osi, and way back, Tyrone Wheatley–both eye popping. I still can’t figure how Wheatley wasn’t great. Pierce did slow down. One of my buddies thought he was out of shape. I don’t know.
LEv – good one. Suspend him from a crane in a harness, swing him into position to adjust the wind currents. Mic him up, it’ll be a goldmine.
Aunt Chuckie – Get back to me when Wangs ERA is less than 10. It will take 50 scoreless to get it around 4.
Levi—we merely collect all of Francesa’s empty coke bottles, recycle them, and the right field fence goes to 25 feet. Mets have Pepsi Porch. Yankees get Francesa’s Cokes.
Nooger – I was in dayton, OH when the Giants selected Wheatley and loved the pick. “Never got caught from behind” in college. I remember laughing at the Jets for letting Sapp go in favor of Brady that year.
Would love a training camp report or two when you are there. I always wanted to check it out but have never made it.
I wanted Shaun Alexander over Dayne. Sat with a Jets scout at a Knicks game prior to that draft and he had told me Dayne didnt hit the holes fast enough. He was right.
Kevin–Dayne never looked good here. I remember they got him around #15 and was shocked with so many great guys still on the board. Wheatley was one of my favorites. Also watched Dave Brown closely and always wondered what they saw in him. I will certainly give you a training camp report. They all hang out at this place called the Across The Street Pub. Last year, the place displayed the Super Bowl Trophy and Ring for all to see and even put the ring on. Pictures included. I ate that up.
Wow. That place sounds good. I’ll never forget telling my brother the Giants selected Dave Brown and showing him his mug shot that was in the paper. We both looked at each other and said, “bust”.
Brad Maynard kicked a football like no one i ever saw. Ike Hilliard cut on a dime and Dave Brown couldn’t hit receivers in drills with no pass rush.
Someone has an Easter fetish.
Nooger -
I was in Detroit Silverdome when Kannell hit Cab Calloway with OT game winning pass. First and last time I was ever watched a game from a dome.
A coach from Det. at the time was Tyrones old coach at Michigan ( i think Moeller??) and he was ripping on him from Lions sideline ( i had front row seats and could hear it all). Was telling his defense Tyrone lacked heart and was an easy takedown.
Happy B Day to the Yankees 2nd greatest 1B!
According to Francesa, the Mets “never ever ever ever ever get a big hit”.
Four “evers” in honor of Mets4.
Kevin–I think that’s the key with wheatley, because physically—he was at the very top. Some guys turn to mush at crunch time. Saw the replay yesterday with Kyle Farnsworth–he’s 0-3 with about an 18 ERA. He’s one of them.
Nooger – See the Eagles gave 60 mil to a LT? I like Osi one on one against Peters. Will be a fun match up to watch this season.
4 evers, ahead of the curve.
For all those participating, I’m working on scores for the BBT Classic.
It’s about time
This just in: Dodgers moving back to NY and into Ebbetts wannabe Citi Field. A spokesman said, “We have been waiting 50 years to get a new stadium and it’s fitting that on the 50th anniversary of leaving, we’re coming back.” Asked where the Mets will play, Jay Horwitz said “All games are being moved to Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.” Omar remarked that, “It’s best for the brand if we are closer to Manhattan.”
Jerry Manuel said “It will be good for my power hitting lineup including Sheff and Tatis because the left field fence will only be 185 feet away.”
Yankees rained out.
Dave Kingman went to USC. So did Tom Seaver.
levi: lol dodger announcement
ghost out.
And they both got traded by Mets on the same day. BOOOO!
Wilpon and the rotunda for McCourt. Pull the trigger.
Heard an interesting question…what % of Mets fans today have actually seen one inning of s Brooklyn Dodgers game?
I hate the rotunda and the dodgers. Wilpon fucked the stadium up with dumb Ebbets field shit. What an asshole.
Now I hear they want to erase Doc Goodens signature on a Citi Field wall. The Mets front office just doesnt get it.
BOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I just read that Kev:
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2009/04/20/2009-04-20_gooden_wonders_if_mets_want_him.html
D-Right has been struggling lately as well as J-Rey. We should thank D-Got and Ry-Chu picking them up. I know Gangsta needs to find F-Tat some AB’s but not in a bunting situation. I would have rather had El-Cast up in that spot. B-Par has been a pleasent surprise out of the pen and Jo-Fel has been doing the job lately. Nice looking player in O-tos backing up R-Cast. He appears to have a cannon. T-Red coming back is NOT good news. M-Pel can’t be back soon enough.
Mets- I’m dizzy. At least they can’t lose today.
Lev – Tryin’to keep up with LB’s monikers. Bwahahaha.
When do WE get our new stadium Lev?
Jo-Fel= Pe-Fel’s cousin-
Ovechkin has 19 shots on net in 2 games! Holey smoke!
None found the back of the net so far!
I called him Jo-Fel didn’t I? My bad! P-Fel sounds better anyway!
You’ll grow to love Icahn Stadium. At least Carl didn’t use taxpayer dough to clean it up. If that doesn’t work Trump is going to build a big gold palace for them in the Meadowlands called “Mets Field in Trump Palace”. It’s going to be great for the brand. Wait till you see the restaurants in that place.
Mets I would rather have Jo-Fel; you know there isn’t a batter who would dig in against him.
