The Yanks (7-6) grind out a victory to split the series 2-2 with the Cleveland Indians (4-9), grabbing a fan-assisted victory in yesterday’s action at the New Yankee Stadium.

A.J. Burnett, again being asked to stop a Chien-Ming Wang-induced landslide, dodged, ducked, and weaved his way towards keeping his team in the game for six and a third innings.  A.J. smartly opted to pitch around the hot Cleveland bats – which had clubbed eleven home runs and outscored the Yanks 37-12 in the previous three games of the series - by walking seven yet only giving up three runs on three hits.

All three Indian runs came on home runs, a solo shot by Shin-Su Choo to jump out ahead in the second inning and a two-runner from Ryan Garko in the fourth that stretched the Indian lead to 3-0.

The Yanks responded in the bottom of the fourth when Derek Jeter doubled to deep right center and came around on a Mark Teixeira line drive to right field to make the score 3-1.

Burnett and Cleveland starter Carl Pavano – in a glorious return to the Bronx after a heroic stint with the Bombers that is the stuff of legend - battled for two innings more until the Indians threatened in the top of the seventh.  A.J. walked the leadoff batter Ryan Garko, whose speedy replacement Trevor Crowe reached second base on a wild pitch.  After Burnett induced a ground out from Kelly Shoppach, Crowe again advanced on another wild pitch.  A.J. then invoked his inner Dice-K, pitching around and issuing consecutive walks to Asdrubal Cabrera and Grady Sizemore to load the bases solid with one out and 2-3-4 coming up to bat for Cleveland.  Jonathan Albaladejo was called in from the Yankee bullpen, which had given up an unspeakable amount of runs the previous games.  But Albaladejo escaped the jam, efficiently getting a force out at home via a Mark DeRosa grounder to third and then getting a groundout to second from Victor Martinez to stunt the Indian rally.

Albaladejo’s performance inspired the lineup to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh.  Robbie Cano led off with a double to left and came around to score when Hideki Matsui singled to center.  Jensen Lewis was brought in to relieve, and quickly induced a fielder’s choice on a bunt that sat Matsui down and left Cody Ransom on first base with one out.  Yankee manager Joe Girardi opted to bring in Jorge Posada to pinch-hit for catcher Jose Molina.  On a 1-1 fastball, Posada lofted a deep fly to right field.  Crowe, an infielder who entered the game to pinch run for Garko, leapt to the top of the wall and appeared to have brought the ball back into play with a bobble after colliding with some fans reaching for the ball.  The umpires paused and ruled it a home run, which brought protest from Indians manager Eric Wedge and sent the umpires to the videotape room to officially review.  Upon examining the replay, it was seen from various angles that the ball indeed hit the top of the wall, a homerun, and that the gloves collided in such a way as to not have effected the legal clearing of the ball from the field of play.  Yanks went up 4-3 on the two-runner.

Brian Bruney and Mariano Rivera finished out the game for the Yanks.  Rivera did not earn the save but got in some regular work, as Cody Ransom piled on some insurance with a bases-clearing double in the eighth that left fielder Choo lost in the sun.

Game Notes

Twenty (20) home runs have been hit out of the New Yankee Stadium in four games.  Yankee players commented after the game that the wind was not carrying the baseball out of the park, contrary to previous games, and that weather effects were more similar to the Old Stadium.  The New Yankee Stadium has been regarded as a wind tunnel of sorts.  Pictures have shown the wind has a tendency to blow left to right, with a “jet stream” heading out to the already short porch in right field.

Today is ex-Yankee great Don Mattingly’s 48th birthday.  Happy B-Day, Donnie Baseball!

  1. Don’t get me wrong, the park itself is beautiful but it just doesn’t feel like home to me right now. I hope it grows on me. I looked for a link to write to Wilpon and couldn’t come up with anything. If you come across a link, drop it on me!

  2. Jo-Fel could be the BLOOGY (BLind One Out GuY )in the pen. Now that’s baseball.

  3. Mets – Trump……haha!

  4. That picture of Sheff’s 500th was great Mets. The place looks like a 100% improvement over Shea. I hope it doesn’t take them as long to start making good memories there.

  5. Thanks bro. I was so into the AB that I almost forgot I was suppossed to be taking the pic. When the first pitch crossed the plate, all the flashbulbs reminded me. I snapped it and by the time I looked up, it was sailing right over us. It was great. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going crazy about Sheffs blast, regardless of my past feelings about him.

I need some more blue & orange in there.I need a familiar face. I need some Doc & Straw memories. Grote and Hodges would be nice. Of course, Seaver & Koosman. I hope the Coupons find their senses.

  6. The Mook Rotunda!

  7. The Mets don’t want Mets’ memories, didn’t you get the memo. Dodger memories only:

  8. What a shame Lev. That could be the start of a great tradition. The fans MUST speak out on this. I acknowledge the fact that Doc let his ship sail by. He made his own bed. He stole some winning years from me thats for sure….but….every person faces their own demons. Every team had their share of off-field reckless behavior. I do not pity him but I forgive him. He brought me some of the best times of my life.

    Leave the signature up!

  9. It would become a great tradition Mets. He did this spontaneously and the fans ate it up. He was 157-85 for them and it’s time they start acknowledging it.

  10. WHat’s up guys? What’s with the Mets signing Willy Mo Pena? Do they have absolutely no faith in Church?

  11. What’s up guys? A couple of questions. Why are the Mets signing Willy Mo Pena? How many RF do they need? And why are guys like Eric Duncan (.364/.421/.455) and Angel Berroa (.356/.412/.578) remaining down in AAA while Ransom continues to play?

  12. Hey Mac- The Mets need a guy who is going to strike out more than Wright at this point. Seriously I have to believe that they will try to move Church because he is not one of Jerry’s guys.

I thought Berroa should have been the utility infielder and if he was here now, he would be playing third and Ransom would be the utility at this point. The Yankees have a lot of guys just taking up space at this point.

  13. Cody Ransom has biblical power over the sun. Didn’t you see it happen?

  14. Lib-AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  15. Wright is killing me in FB. Need the first round pick to perform a lot better than that. Yeah, if I am Church I have a bag packed. I don’t get why they just don’t let him play.
Ransom is hitting .150 right now. Probably less than a month till Alex returns. We have been waiting years for Duncan to develop and now there is an opportunity to bring him up and give him a shot. I don’t get why he isn’t here right now.

  16. Because then they have to eat the decision they made to make him an OFer? I dunno, just sayin.

  17. They won’t let him play Mac because he won’t fail. So they sit him when he is the hottest guy on the team. He obviously has a conflict with Manuel and it is clouding the manager’s judgment.

They are already stuck with Gardner developing here. They have a right fielder now who is not an everyday player, a left fielder who should be DHing (make that 2 of those) a catcher who doesn’t catch and another catcher who doesn’t hit. How many more positions to you want to hold tryouts at?

  18. Don’t forget a 5th OF who cleans up and pitches. This is like a team with feet for hands.

  19. Well, Posada has been throwing well pretty consistently. It looks like he will get his 110-120 games. He doesn’t worry me. And Swish was an every day player in Oakland as well as Chicago. I don’t mind him playing everyday. But, Ransom has had a tough time both with the glove and the bat. Duncan has been on the bubble for a long time. Time to log some games in the big show.

  20. I saw Cash started off hitting .615 for SWB. He’s a .180 hitter for his career. Big jump from AAA to the Bronx. Duncan hasn’t been on the bubble, he’s been a bust since they took him in the first round out of SHP.
He hits for nine games and he doesn’t suddenly become the guy they thought he was 6 years ago. .247 in 2300 minor league ab’s holds a lot more weight than 33 ab in 9 games. I don’t remember you mention Duncan once in the spring, perhaps I am mistaken. Duncan isn’t the answer.

Inge makes more sense to me. Maybe the Tigers will take Duncan in return.

I noticed you left Gardner out of your response.

  21. Scores are up, there, point/counterpoint:

    http://bronxbrasstacks.com/bronx-brass-classic-scores/

  22. I mentioned Duncan a couple of times initially after Alex went down. Naturally, I haven’t seen Duncan play yet this year but he is hitting the ball well right now. Once Alex is back there likely won’t be another chance for him to come up for the Yanks so why not get him in now. It is not like he is over the hill. He is only 25. He can’t do worse than Ransom. But, I would sign on for an Inge for Duncan deal today. As far as Gardner is concerned I have nothing to complain about yet. He is starting to get his hits. He should be bunting more. I think we will see Jackson up mid-season but I am happy with Gardner right now.

  23. God, Rollins and Wright are just killing me right now. #1 and #2 pick are getting out performed by later round picks easily.

  24. You are going to get some lift Mac when Rollins starts hitting and Wright stops striking out and starts driving in runs.

  25. In thinking about Willy Mo- Omar may just be stock- piling guys after what happened last year in left field. After using 14 guys out there he might not want to be caught short again this year having to bring up infielders to play the outfield. There is no way he can trade Church if he is in his right mind. He doesn’t have much OF depth in the system and probably just wants insurance even if it consists of castoffs like Pena and Kielty.
