Yankees Advance; Mets Fall Back

Yanks winMets lose.
Yanks moved to nine games above .500, which must make Joe Girardi whistle while he irons his shirts.  Since November, I’ve been saying that he has until June 1 to be in first place, or at least winning consistently, or else his job was on the line.  Alas, it is done, and now Joe has a whole ‘nother four months to play with, to add and subtract, to shuffle and reshuffle his cards as he will.  There is a new test in keeping up the pace and lengthening the lead now; the next level for Joe is the playoffs.  Now, if he can only get Mark Teixeira to stop breaking to first…

Yanks Alone In First Place; Mets Harpoon Fish

Yanks winMets win.
FIRST PLACE, BABY!  First time they are alone in first place since 2006.
Yanks reached for first place, and in an odd confluence of performances, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada had two hits apiece while Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera got the win and the save.  Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher drove in the non-Jeter runs and Alfredo Aceves pitched three solid innings of relief.  Yanks stopped the streaking Indians to boot.  Can’t ask for a better night for baseball.
Mike Pelfrey went seven-plus against the floundering Marlins, but the game was decided in the bottom of the eleventh when Gary Sheffield singled off Florida pitcher Brian Sanches.  Sheff unnerved the battery, drawing throws over, then stealing, and then advancing… (more…)

Yanks Move to Seven Above .500; Mets Make It Six

Yanks winMets win.
A.J. Burnett danced around the Rangers for six innings and they couldn’t get a good punch in.  Chien-Ming Wang has progressed to mopping up in Texas.  Mark Teixeira does no wrong.  Derek Jeter has a hit in 37 of 47 games this year, and is 10-1 in stolen base attempts.  Melky Cabrera may hit the DL.  Tonight, it’s Pettitte versus Cliff Lee.
Hey Gary Sheffield, don’t hurt yourself coming home – we got replay now!  Dan Murphy is “electrifying”.  Johan Santana took it easy and gave up three runs in six, good for win number seven.  Tonight, it’s Sean Lee versus El Giraffe.

Yanks Hit the Wall; Mets Break On Through

Yanks loseMets win.
Joba Chamberlain had nothing last night after being called away from the Nock Hockey boards to start the game late.  The Yankee lineup couldn’t chain hits together worth a dang last night.  Melky Cabrera didn’t quite slam into the wall but the run-in was awkward enough to put him out.  Xavier Nady is rehabbing.  After the 9-2 homestand, Yanks are at 26-20.  Six games over .500 = fat + dumb + happy…for a little bit.
Livan Hernandez kept the ball rolling for a CG, the first of the Mets’ young season.  Gary Sheffield has taken this team under his wing.  Clubhouse cancer and all…25-20 without Church, Schneider, Reyes, & Delgado.  Farmer Jer must have read BBT, David Wright is back in the 3-hole… (more…)

Hughes Shoots Up Texas; Sheffield Shoulders the Mets

Yanks winMets win.
Phil Hughes turned in an 8-inning odessey en route to a Yankee victory in Arlington, including an escape from a no-out, first-and-second jam by striking out three Rangers.  Chien-Ming Who?    Brian Bruney is back to the DL and he shouldn’t have been back to begin with.  CYA, Joe Girardi, CYA.  In the meantime, Alfredo “Aces” Aceves can help Phil Coke pack up in the eighth inning.  With the offense starting to fire full bore, the ‘pen might not be so critical for a while…however, you know better teams beat bullpens so Bruney will have to figure out his elbow and how far he should push it on his own.  Yanks have used 12 different pitchers so far… (more…)

Interleagues…Cool!

Yanks win, Mets win.
Yanks have the best record in the league in 1-run ballgames at 8-2 (runner-up is LAD at 9-3; no one else is even close).  I don’t go back far, but I have never seen a Yankee team walk off this many games.  I’m glad I left the NYDN pages leaving everybody thinking I was Melky’s biggest fan (actually, I led the lynch mob to Melky’s locker last year, but that’s besides the point). Can’t say enough about what Alex Rodriguez is bringing to this team right now.  For those that watch closely these last few years, he even looks like a different person, as if he’s trying to ignore the camera – surely a monumental feat for His Alex-ness.  No,… (more…)

Interleagues…whatever.

Aceves Saves

Yanks win.
The x-rays are negative and the Yanks won the game.  Did I mention the x-rays are negative?  Joba Chamberlain will return.  Alfredo Aceves can keep being balls-out in the meantime.  “Aces” hasn’t given up a run since he relieved Phil Hughes versus Boston on May 5th, when he took the hill in the fifth inning and went four and a third innings thereafter, striking out seven.  He doesn’t have a loss in 43 career innings pitched with the Yankees.  I’ll shut up about him now.  Robbie Cano, don’t you know?  Batting second and raking…I’ll take it.  Despite Jonathan Albaladejo’s tremendous four-run dump last night, perhaps a favor to Mo in his journey to 500 saves, he’s been pretty sharp in May.
Tonight,… (more…)

BOTO Goes Bang for Yanks; Dog Days Come Early for Mets

Yanks winMets lose.
Brian Roberts is the best runner on the Yankees – just wanted to put that out there.  Phil Hughes gave up three runs and only went five innings on 89 pitches, however, the start felt like a step forward.  He threw strikes…I’ve heard that somewhere, that throwing strikes is key…while giving up only one walk.  He let up two dongs but had a career-high nine strikeouts.  When you challenge the hitters, good things happen spontaneously.  Bottom of the order (get it?  BOTO? TOTO, MOTO, BOTO…COPYRIGHTED, BITCHES!) was big for the Yanks, but when you’re stacked with Nick Swisher, Robbie Cano, and “Hot” Melky Cabrera down there, good things happen spontaneously.
Someone get Lonn “F Me? F YOU!!” Trost into the (more…)

Yanks Roll, Mets Rocked

Yanks winMets lose.
We’ll have to keep an eye on Brad Bergesen, because he was throwing damn near invisibly through six and a third.  Alex Rodriguez stalked him to the eighth pitch in the first inning, splattering his fourth home run and sixth hit.  Barring that, and save the two walks issued before Chris Ray blew the game, Brad showed skill out there.  I’m imagining Shoe enjoying the work he put in, live from the Bronx.  That said, nice to see CC Sabathia humming along in a professional manner.  It’s been a LOOOOONNNNNGGG time since the Yanks had a horse – personally, I had started to believe they never would.  Brian Bruney was hitting 95 mph on the gun last night.  Phil Hughes versus Jeremie… (more…)

Club Records Set for Walk-Offs, Balks.

Yanks winMets lose
Happy May.  I’ll take a “W” no matter how it comes.  The club record is tied with three consecutive walk-offs.  Alfredo Aceves is my favorite reliever.
Mike Pelfrey is one smooth operator.  The club record is tied with three balks in a single start.
