Phil Hughes turned in an 8-inning odessey en route to a Yankee victory in Arlington, including an escape from a no-out, first-and-second jam by striking out three Rangers. Chien-Ming Who? Brian Bruney is back to the DL and he shouldn’t have been back to begin with. CYA, Joe Girardi, CYA. In the meantime, Alfredo “Aces” Aceves can help Phil Coke pack up in the eighth inning. With the offense starting to fire full bore, the ‘pen might not be so critical for a while…however, you know better teams beat bullpens so Bruney will have to figure out his elbow and how far he should push it on his own. Yanks have used 12 different pitchers so far out of the ‘pen, and it isn’t June yet: Aces, Day-O, Sleepah, Mo, Wang, Tomko, Edwar, Veras, Marte, Coke, Melancon, and David Robertson, who is returning, incidentally. Don’t look now, but Jose Veras has been the Yanks’ second most consistent reliever (outside Coke, barring Mo).
All is well in Metsville. Again, the Sheffield pickup was a good one, and now you see why. Gary Sheffield is a lion and has the ability to pick a team up his shoulders and carry it through rough stretches. He now has 15 hits in his last 11 games. You can’t tell me that’s not big for a team that lost Carlos Delgado for a couple of months and is down Jose Reyes. That said, John Maine held the underrated Washington offense to a run in six innings while the bullpen squeaked by the last three innings. Francisco Rodriguez is back in action, I just can’t tell (with that Tazmanian Devil windup) whether or not he’s easing off the gas until he’s 100%. Carlos Beltran has mental problems. Whatever is troubling his knee, it can’t be from sliding.

He’s already a starter. Keep him a starter. The argument was lost 5 months ago.
Joe, did you see that BillinSanFran was over at the DN the other day.I just saw one of his posts after the fact and didnt talk to him.
No kidding, JRZ! That’s GREAT! He’s already lived more than a year after he said he would.
Did you see Dennis recently?
Yea, I was very happy to see his name over there.I copied and pasted it back here.
No, I just remembered DENNIS telling me that last year on The NY Daily News. DENNIS’ posts were deleted by Mark Feinsand after he made a strong case to keep Jo-Mo. That’s also the last time that someone called me “Fredo Gandil.”
Who called you that, Joe?
Thats not a nice thing to call someone.
Fredo isn’t a good word.
DENNIS. He wasn’t being mean, he was just kidding when he answered my question. I asked him if he thought that the Yanks should keep Joba in the bullpen. Me and him were of the theory of a Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Joba was excellent in the pen before they converted him back to a starter, so we thought they should have left well-enough alone.
Now he can score on the ground ball to 2nd Matsui is gonna hit.
I didn’t mind. You guys called me that last year a few times, when I first started posting. I just see it as a teasing, semi-derogatory term for Yank haters. We all got it last year on The NY Daily News(Mets fans, Red Sox fans, and me).
nope, he even fucked up his groundball to 2nd duties.
It was somethin else over there back then Joe.
I gotta be up in the morning. Enjoy.
Later Lib.
Nighty’nite, Lib.
Omar Vizquel- HOF?
I think so.
Me too
He would have ALOT more ASGs if it wasnt for Big Al, Jeter and Nomar.
2800 hits and 400 SBs when its all said and done.
Can’t compete offensively with those guys but as good as Ozzie in the field and better with the stick.
That’s a tough one. How big do you think the gap is between he and Ozzie defensively?
everytime they show Tex on this Texas BC they talk about the haul they got from Atl.Actually called it a treasure chest.
I think he was Ozzie without the back flips.
not big at all.
It was a pretty good trade for them if Andrus is as good as they say he is. Saltalamacchia and Harrison too.
The Braves gave up a ton to have Tex for 157 games and not make the playoffs. McCann did make Salt expendable though.
Ozzie 281 errors in 19 seasons .978
Omar 183 in 21 .984
He go in ahead of Larkin? I just can’t see that.
100 more Es for Ozzie in 2 less years.
Is Larkin eligible yet?
500 more hits
Next year J for Larkin I think
Larkin has more BBs than Ks for his career, impressive. They both should be in.
His last year was 04 so he should have been on this years ballot.Or maybe next year is his 1st.
That’s what I mean. If Larkin doesn’t get in, I can’t see Omar getting in. Should Larkin get in, yes. Will he? Maybe, maybe not.
Aparicio is in with a lower avg and TWICE the errors of Vizquel.
Maranville lower avg and 3 times the errors
If this kid dont start throwing strikes and challenging hitters he should go back to the fuckin BP.
I think Aparicio got in because he was a hispanic player in Boston in the 70′s. Tough job.
That’s like yelling TUNA.
He played for 15 years before Boston though.
tee hee
Ha! True dat. I think SS changed after Oz and really Larkin. Before that there were very few offensively strong SS. The era that Omar played in had a lot of extremely talented SS from the offensive side. I think it will make it tough for him being compared to the other SS of his generation. We are talking first ballot, right?
Rizzuto in too.
No Concepcion.
Just noticed that Frankie C is a no batting glove guy.I like that, I noticed the other day that he didnt have one on his glove hand behind the plate either.
No Concepcion?
I think Vizquel may get the Anti-juice votes.
