Hughes Shoots Up Texas; Sheffield Shoulders the Mets

Yanks winMets win.

Phil Hughes turned in an 8-inning odessey en route to a Yankee victory in Arlington, including an escape from a no-out, first-and-second jam by striking out three Rangers.  Chien-Ming Who?    Brian Bruney is back to the DL and he shouldn’t have been back to begin with.  CYA, Joe Girardi, CYA.  In the meantime, Alfredo “Aces” Aceves can help Phil Coke pack up in the eighth inning.  With the offense starting to fire full bore, the ‘pen might not be so critical for a while…however, you know better teams beat bullpens so Bruney will have to figure out his elbow and how far he should push it on his own.  Yanks have used 12 different pitchers so far out of the ‘pen, and it isn’t June yet:  Aces, Day-O, Sleepah, Mo, Wang, Tomko, Edwar, Veras, Marte, Coke, Melancon, and David Robertson, who is returning, incidentally.  Don’t look now, but Jose Veras has been the Yanks’ second most consistent reliever (outside Coke, barring Mo).

All is well in Metsville.  Again, the Sheffield pickup was a good one, and now you see why.  Gary Sheffield is a lion and has the ability to pick a team up his shoulders and carry it through rough stretches.  He now has 15 hits in his last 11 games.   You can’t tell me that’s not big for a team that lost Carlos Delgado for a couple of months and is down Jose Reyes.  That said, John Maine held the underrated Washington offense to a run in six innings while the bullpen squeaked by the last three innings.  Francisco Rodriguez is back in action, I just can’t tell (with that Tazmanian Devil windup) whether or not he’s easing off the gas until he’s 100%.  Carlos Beltran has mental problems.  Whatever is troubling his knee, it can’t be from sliding.

  1. Maybe Omar and Larkin aint the slam dunks I think they are.

  2. Yeah, definitely. If people still care by then.

  3. Concepcion got 16% of the vote in 2008 in his last year on the ballot.

  4. Good point about the anti juice vote. They will be struggling to find players with no doubts for the next 25 years or more.

  5. Dawson and Blyleven next year.

  6. It seems to me Joba pitches differently in Texas. He throws a lot of breaking and off speed pitches.

  7. You think playing on turf is a defensive advantage? All true hops and such or a disadvantage because the ball is moving faster?

    jrzinbatonrouge May 26, 2009 at 11:57 pm
  8. Mac, I dont understand why he isnt throwing the fastball more, in all his starts.

    jrzinbatonrouge May 26, 2009 at 11:58 pm
  9. If it is your home field I think it is an advantage. You know exactly how the ball is going to play.

  10. You would think that Joba would have gone after these guys after watching Hughes yesterday. He plays way too much.

    84 pitches-46 strikes

  11. He did the same thing last year in Texas when he got hurt. it was breaking ball after breaking ball. The idea of it being a hitter’s park is in his head, me thinks.

  12. Turf an advantage but the old Astro Turf was definitely quicker by a lot.

Vizquel is definitely disadvantaged by “competing” with Jeter and Al.

  13. I hope so.If they go that route and start letting in all the fringe guys from the last 20 years they can keep adding players and try to keep the focus off the juicers.

Pete is gonna have company at those signings he has down the road from the Hall. You will be able to get a ball signed by Rose, Bonds and Mcgwire for 100 bucks.

  14. Joba and the pen keep them close and I feel like they are going to take this. Tex bomb.

  15. Not to mention the new crop, Levi. Guys like Ramirez will define what a great SS is to the younger writers.

  16. They can get Tropicana to sponsor those shows- call it “Juice Fest”.

  17. hahahahahahahahahah

  18. Orange Julius, yum.

  19. Vizquel should retire so that there is some distance between him and the left side of the Yankee infield. It helps him that plenty of people will only know Al as a third baseman considering he’ll be playing there for 14 years.

  20. Aceves in, Francesa will be pontificating tomorrow.

  21. Maybe it should be Orangina or, better yet, Sunny Delight. They are fake too.

  22. Oh yeah-Chubby will be all over the 4 inning stint tomorrow. Girardi is definitely thinking of the innings count here, “He’s not throwing strikes and he is behind in the game so let’s not waste innings”.

  23. See, Joba, it is ok to throw strikes in Texas.

  24. Mike Tysons 4 year old daughter died. They better load up a tranq gun.

    jrzinbatonrouge May 27, 2009 at 12:13 am
  25. I am not even tuning in tomorrow. Oh, Max Kellerman where have you gone? Alright guys, I am shutting it down for the night. Enjoy the comeback. Peace.

  26. Later Mac.

  27. Someone has to get it in his head that it is OK to throw strikes everywhere.

Kinsler tripled on a 2-2 slider
Byrd singled in the first on a slider after change, 2 curves, and a change. No fastballs.

Davis homered on an 0-1 change after a first pitch curve.

  28. Hotsui

  29. I’m telling you J, if the bp does the job they win this game.

  30. See ya Mac

  31. Big if, I would think Aceves goes 1 more then Robertson, Coke and Mo.

  32. Frankie C says I am done riding busses.

    jrzinbatonrouge May 27, 2009 at 12:22 am
  33. I cant tell you the last time I saw a Yankee starter on the bench charting pitches the night before his start. If Joba did that he might see what a JO he is being.

    jrzinbatonrouge May 27, 2009 at 12:26 am
  34. Somebody, somewhere is charting them and they should take the one from last night and the one for Joba tonight and say, “see, stooopid, you dont throw strikes”

    jrzinbatonrouge May 27, 2009 at 12:27 am
  35. How do you throw 2 curves, 2 changes and a slider and NO fastballs to Byrd? Fastball hitter or not, that is dumb.

  36. They have to beat it into this kid’s head that he has to throw his fastball for strikes, establish it and then mix in, not rely on, his other pitches.

  37. 4 walks in 4 innings is unacceptable.

  38. Singleton just said, “It all starts with your fastball. If you can locate it, it sets up all your other pitches.” He’s talking about Aceves but it apllies to Joba, big time.

  39. Flaherty just said “The last 2 days they are throwing fastballs by Chris Davis. You almost do him a favor by throwing off speed stuff.”

Joba threw him curveball, change – gone.

  40. Helloooooooo, Parsipany.

Pitch count schmitch count. Livian Hernandez not only threw 127 in garnering his 4th win, but threw 85 pitches in the bullpen beforehand !

    Away !

  41. Yeah Lou, but unlike Johan, The Mets don’t have $140 million tied up in Livan. They would pitch him twice a week if they could get away with it.

  42. fatso will be an unbearable JO today about Joba.

    jrzinbatonrouge May 27, 2009 at 9:59 am
  43. If Joba walks a guy an inning and gives up a hit an inning, he isn’t much good in the bp either. Pitch selection is terrible. The problem with a 24 year old pitcher and a 23 year old catcher is experience, and if Eiland has to call pitches while Molina and Jorge are out then he should. A 74 mph curveball followed by a 78 mph changeup is pointless. What are you changing up from? Flaherty notices after Davis is blown away by an Aceves fastball that throwing him an off speed pitch is like “doing him a favor”. In the eighth inning, Coke hangs a slider down and in and Davis launched his second one. If Flaherty notices it what are the Yankees doing?
