FIRST PLACE, BABY! First time they are alone in first place since 2006.
Yanks reached for first place, and in an odd confluence of performances, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada had two hits apiece while Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera got the win and the save. Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher drove in the non-Jeter runs and Alfredo Aceves pitched three solid innings of relief. Yanks stopped the streaking Indians to boot. Can’t ask for a better night for baseball.
Mike Pelfrey went seven-plus against the floundering Marlins, but the game was decided in the bottom of the eleventh when Gary Sheffield singled off Florida pitcher Brian Sanches. Sheff unnerved the battery, drawing throws over, then stealing, and then advancing… (more…)
