Yanks Alone In First Place; Mets Harpoon Fish

Yanks winMets win.

FIRST PLACE, BABY!  First time they are alone in first place since 2006.

Yanks reached for first place, and in an odd confluence of performances, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada had two hits apiece while Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera got the win and the save.  Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher drove in the non-Jeter runs and Alfredo Aceves pitched three solid innings of relief.  Yanks stopped the streaking Indians to boot.  Can’t ask for a better night for baseball.

Mike Pelfrey went seven-plus against the floundering Marlins, but the game was decided in the bottom of the eleventh when Gary Sheffield singled off Florida pitcher Brian Sanches.  Sheff unnerved the battery, drawing throws over, then stealing, and then advancing to third on a lousy throw.  Omir Santos singled him in for the walkoff and had both Met RBIs, but credit Gary for reaching third base by his own volition.

Matt Wieters didn’t hit in four at-bats but he guided O’s starter Brad Bergesen to eight innings of two-run ball.

BR2 sent me this little gem.  WEEEEEEE…

  13. word press is sketchy today…again…

T-Red (hee) on the mound for the mets today…predictions?

  14. 10 Pitch walks are a “comedy” Gary, not second and third no out in the first.

  15. Oh I’ll be stylin’ with them on my face, BR2.

And I think that BBT should continue with it’s ” ahead of the curve ” journalistic stylings and set the wheels in motion for a penis day. Protect your junk !

  16. I wouldn’t be too happy if I was sitting at this game after having my wallet emptied and watching the product that the Mets put on the field today. I can’t even stomach this game at home. It’s too nice out to watch this crap.

  17. Not watching it…must be bad.

David Ortiz is 0-4 with 2 Ks versus Brian “Hitman” Tallet.

  18. Per MLB.com

NEW YORK — Embattled starting pitcher Oliver Perez suffered a setback during his rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Buffalo and will not make his scheduled start Sunday.

An MRI revealed patellar tendinitis in Perez’s right knee. The Mets plan to send the southpaw to Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Sunday.

Perez made one start in Buffalo last Tuesday, throwing 88 pitches in 4 1/3 innings. Although he allowed just one run on three hits, Perez walked five batters, not exactly erasing concerns about his mechanics.

“All that stems from the knee,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “He can’t be consistent with his fundamentals.”

Perez struggled mightily in five starts with the Mets after signing a three-year contract to remain with the team in the offseason. Perez was 0-2 with a 9.97 ERA before being demoted to the bullpen and eventually placed on the disabled list on May 7.

  19. Jays beat sux again, big poopi 0-4 AGAIN- he should change his name to ofer.Tito doubled his blood pressure medicine after the game.

  20. Pagan and F Mart 2 hits apiece and 5 innings from the bullpen without a run. Those were the positives. I guess that was a giveaway game for the Mets. Speaking of giving, the Mets should GIVE the fans their money back for the product that they put on the field today. One Ramon gone, another has to go and Wilson Valdez has no business in a ML batter’s box.
Tim Redding shouldn’t see the first inning of another game at Citi. Pedro could give you that but at least he’ll give you a little more flair. Oliver Perez can find himself in Buffalo all year for all I care. They are short a starter and Omar knows it. Tough game to watch today.

  21. Red Sox are going to have to sit Ortiz but they won’t because it will highlight the fact that he has probably given them a good year and a half of a 4 year $52 million contract that has another year to go. He is making Castillo’s contract look like a stroke of genius.

  22. BTW- Beltran begging out of the game after the fifth down 7-2 when he is the only big hitter in the lineup. Carlos, don’t come back until your healthy or stay in the game, you choose.

  23. Heilman pitching like a hyman for the Chubs

  24. Joey Votto is on the DL now for “stress related” personal issues. He joins Dontrelle Willis on the All Anxiety Team.

  25. JORGE!

  26. Swisher with a blast.

    All Anxiety…hahaha

  27. Swisher!

  28. If DeRosa was so “valuable”, as Kay just said, why has he been on 4 teams in 6 years?

  29. Vottos paycheck would help me in the stress department.

Mets rinky dink squad caught up with them today. Felt like a loss before it ever happened.

Take tomorrows game and its all good.

  30. Lev – take it easy on Beltran. Mets were wearing white pants. Cut him some slack if he had some stomach issues that hit hard and fast. We’ve all been there.

  31. That Jeter ball had eyes.

  32. Swish out at second.

  33. The word from Citi Field is that Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline returned as a Sing-a-Along during today’s game during the fifth-inning break, while Meet the Mets will again play in the eighth inning.

Last night, Sweet Caroline was not played at all, which was received with cheers today by me, MetsGrrl.com, BrooklynMetFan.com, Evan Roberts on WFAN, and others.

My vote would to be not to play that gay flaming song ( yeah, the neil diamond one)

Sounds like a Jeff Wilpon mandate of some sort.

    LETS GO METS!

  34. If Jeter was smart on that play, he wouldn’t have gotten hung up in the first place.

  35. …batted two runs in, I know, just sayin.

    Sweet Caroline, dah dah daaah

  36. Kept them out of a double play Lib. Gotta run there.

  37. Jeter just got them 2 runs Lib.

    Votto paycheck-lol

    White pants- LMAO

  38. ballgame. relaxing sunday in clev.

  39. Beltran is next Immodium spokesman.

“Gotta go,Gotta go, Gotta go right now….”

  40. Kev- I came across a guy with a Kingman model glove today.

  41. nice glove.

i had a ‘dave parker” for some reason as a kid.

  42. I see that but IMO Garko wouldn’t have had Damon at second, and now you’re stuck with 2 outs. He salvaged the bluff by drawing the rundown out, but drawing the throw would have done. Cleveland misplayed it anyway because they sat out the inning and they are already shuffling around out there.

  43. Just because it worked out doesn’t mean it was the right play. Like I said, he made up for overcommittal and there, that’s a good play, but it was to salvage a bad one.

  44. DId Beltran crap his pants or something?

  45. Jeter is off on the ground ball there to keep out of the double play. He isn’t doing statistical probabilities in his head. It would have been second and third with 2 out anyway if they only get Tex at first.

  46. That would give him a reason to slide. Dirty the squirts.

  47. Gotta disagree with you Lib. It’s a bad play with no out, with 1 out it most certainly is the play.

  48. Did Kay just say, “I bring a smile to people’s ears”????

  49. The play is to draw the throw, because that breaks up the double play. The play is to draw the throw and get back at the bag. Bases loaded, 1 out. ARod walks the next batter and a force is set up anyway – averages shmaverages, how does getting hung up between home and third help you for the third out? Jeter didn’t hit for Cano, did he? Hey I’ll take good breaks any day, I’m just saying he covered himself.
