FIRST PLACE, BABY! First time they are alone in first place since 2006.
Yanks reached for first place, and in an odd confluence of performances, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada had two hits apiece while Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera got the win and the save. Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher drove in the non-Jeter runs and Alfredo Aceves pitched three solid innings of relief. Yanks stopped the streaking Indians to boot. Can’t ask for a better night for baseball.
Mike Pelfrey went seven-plus against the floundering Marlins, but the game was decided in the bottom of the eleventh when Gary Sheffield singled off Florida pitcher Brian Sanches. Sheff unnerved the battery, drawing throws over, then stealing, and then advancing to third on a lousy throw. Omir Santos singled him in for the walkoff and had both Met RBIs, but credit Gary for reaching third base by his own volition.
Matt Wieters didn’t hit in four at-bats but he guided O’s starter Brad Bergesen to eight innings of two-run ball.
BR2 sent me this little gem. WEEEEEEE…

“He isn’t doing statistical probabilities in his head.” WTF does that mean? Take that crap to Janish.
The seagulls must have been drawn by Swisher’s defense.
Jeter was the second out Lib.
The play is not to “draw the throw”. He is off on contact down.
The probability of them turning the DP has no bearing on the play. He is running as soon as the ball is hit on the ground.
Take that to Janish-tee hee
And if he had a shot at the plate, he wouldn’t have gotten hung up. When you get hung up, you’ve farted the porch already. So you salvage. To his credit, he drew the play out long enough to trade his out for two bases. CAno came in and picked that up.
I like it better no outs. But one out, that’s a little too risky for me.
You couldn’t be more wrong. It doesn’t matter if he has a shot at the plate you are off on contact. You stop to give the runners a chance to move up.
Tex has done that twice within a couple of games. Cano had no shot at that. He has to go into the hole to get that with CC covering.
You do it so that you still have a runner in scoring position at second with 2 outs instead of stranding the guy at third.
I know WHY it’s “done.” If it’s done correctly, Jeter is still standing on third. Why would Garko, one out, not go 3-6-3 if he could?
Because it is already 5-0. You don’t take the chance of not getting the double play when you have a sure out at the plate and keep them from scoring. That’s why they do it.
It’s not sure out if Jeter doesn’t flush it up.
but because Jeter committed too far, it’s a sure out. Jeter flushed up FIRST, smartened up SECOND. Luckily, Cleveland never smartened up.
cream pie contest will settle it.
Jeter said to himself, “hmmm how can I help the team. I know! Instead of second and third, one out, I’ll make it second and third, two out!”
Did you see Gardner stop on that ground ball? No he comes hard to score. Garko drops the ball and Brett scores. He is still standing on third playing with himself if he is just trying to “draw the throw”.
You lost the argument. You’re arguing chickens and eggs. Chickens and eggs. BUH-CAW
Wieters had his first hit. SHoe’s cream pie-ing right now.
Again, you could not be more wrong about this! There is no chicken and egg, that’s your argument. He is off on contact PERIOD. That has been the play since Alexander Cartwright threw the bases down in a diamond and it will be the play until the Apocalypse.

Jeter doesn’t say anything to himself there he just runs. There is no thought process, he just runs, PERIOD

So as they are talking about how good DeRosa is he doesn’t run on a ball down the line until he sees it may be fair and gets thrown out by a step. Two innings he threw to third to try to get Gardner who was running on the pitch. 4 teams in 6 years.
They didn’t have outs back then, Lev.
Don’t bring Mario into this, Lev. Mario has nothing to do with it.
If he’s head down running on the ground, why’d he stop?
Kay talking about the “Nolan Ryan/Texas Rangers dropping the 100 pitch count” story said that when he talked to Joe, he said all pitchers are different. Let me ask you this: If all pitchers are different, why are 95% taken out around 100 pitches? Why has 100 become some mythical level, when it is really just an arbitrary number? Nolan Ryan believes that all pitchers are different so they will each have their own count instead of a uniform one.
uhhh…nevermind.
Lib- He has the play in front of him. He sees that he is dead halfway down the line. His first Job is done, his next one is to get the runners to both move up. He did them BOTH.
gimme a break I’ve been laying tile for six hours.
OK, I’ll chalk it up to grout fumes.
How goes it?
Ryan Howard with 2 dingers and 5 RBI’s against the Nots.
Dusty Baker is going to be the Manager of the ALL Anxiety team if he doesn’t get Votto back.
Texas putting a hurtin on the Athletics. That Billy Beane is a genius putting a team together that hasn’t done anything since Giambi was there.
That was my daily “Billy Beane is overrated” rant.
Pujols just hit a laser over the CF wall in SF off of Zito. He is just a ridiculously good hitter.
Jose Veras is simply abysmal…I’d trade him right now for Rod Beck’s corpse.
“Pujols just hit a laser over the CF wall in SF off of Zito. He is just a ridiculously good hitter.”…says the guy who I took out three years of my life to convince that Pujols was clean.
Yeah, fumes, no shower, no dinner, not enough beer, all that stuff. Just got in from a shower finally. Fart the porch, not the first time, won’t be the last. In case you haven’t noticed, this blog ain’t about me being right all the time. Never was. Never will be. That’s what / what will seperate me from anyone else you read. Everyone’s an expert but me. And that’s why I’m growing.
Garko threw me for a loop but good for the Yanks that he didn’t throw Jeter for a loop.
BTW I’m targeting a commercial launch for sure in the offseason. There are just steps I have to take. When that happens, everyone comes with me if they want and everyone will get fed. I’m not some kind of wanna-be internet mogul, like a lot of crapbags out there with blogs.
Veras…sucks is right!
Hey Supe, have a good one. Later Lev.
10-4 LB…have a good one bro.
“Convince he was clean”??? All of these guys are tainted Lib, whether they did or didn’t. Manny is a ridiculously good hitter too. Didn’t mean he was clean.
Veras is all over the place. If Eiland can get him to tighten it up, he could be very good. He’s got a 96 mph fastball and a 78 mph curve. If Eiland hasn’t made him a project, I don’t know what he is waiting for.
Good Night Lib
Lev Veras’ mechanics look terrible…lots of movement prior to delivering the ball…head jerking…almost Okijima like. I think “tighten up” is a very salient way of putting it…he needs to tighten up big time. Right he’s strictly a mop up guy IMO until he gets right.
I completely agree Supe.
I’m just not ready to give up on a guy with his stuff. He is just “slinging” it out there and has been for pretty much the whole season. Tonight should have been a mop up considering they were winning by 7 runs. They are getting good starting pitching, great defense and great hitting. The bullpen to Mo is definitely a problem right now.
