This team is earning a “scrappy” reputation because of performances like Tim Redding’s last night. Seven-innings of Pujols-stunting work earned a victory for the Mets on the heels of yet another injury – this time it’s Carlos Beltran with a sore knee. What’s a manager to do? Bat Tatis in the cleanup spot? Someone do me a favor and translate this paragraph from MLB.com, because I can’t make heads or tails of this hokey-pokey:
His assignment, the 14th involving 13 Mets this season, prompted the club to promote rookie Fernando Martinez from its Triple-A Buffalo affiliate. Jeremy Reed was to play center field, in Beltran’s stead Monday when the Mets began a four-game series against the Cardinals at Citi Field. But manager Jerry Manuel indicated he would use Martinez in center field with some regularity. The club had demoted Martinez to Buffalo last week when Nick Evans was added to the big league roster, at least partially because it wanted Martinez to play regularly.
I don’t follow the Mets that closely, but if I follow that paragraph, the Mets demoted F-Mart so he can play every day in Buffalo. That would make Jeremy Reed the fourth outfielder and Nick Evans the fifth (!). Without Beltran, though, F-Mart gets called back up, as Reed becomes the CFer, Evans is the fourth OFer, and F-Mart is the fifth (!), and, F-Mart still won’t play everyday because maybe Reed will be the every day CFer, but then again, maybe not. OK. Got it.
Donald Fehr will retire after 25 years as the MLBPA’s EVP:
“It has been a high privilege to be entrusted with the leadership of this extraordinary union for the last 25 years, and I am enormously proud of what the players have accomplished during that time,” Fehr said in a statement.
“But now, about two years before the next round of collective bargaining, is the right time for me to relinquish my position and for the players to name new leadership. Accordingly, I have informed members of the executive board that I will resign effective no later than next March 31.”
Fehr cashes out just before his luck looks to tumble. With the kind of heat the players, and the players alone, have taken for PED usage, that next round of collective bargaining that Donald mentions prominently shapes to be a doozy for the MLBPA. BBT Analyst Jrz suspects the remaining 102 names on “The List” to be leaked. I’ll add that those names will be leaked slowly and methodically, maximized for impact. In the meantime, hit BBT’s “Lucky 102” page and drop a comment on who you think will be named.

JRZ knows me like a book. He asks me how I would feel if someone insulted my cat. Jeez! My cat is my whole life!
Well, if an opposing fan insulted my cat (my world) I probably would have told him/her to screw off, but I wouldn’t take a swing at him.
It’s not fair, but the baseball stadium is the one place where I will listen to a bunch of people say all sorts of crap to me, and ignore them. I have a sneaking suspicion that 99 % of those people wouldn’t say all those things if they didn’t have the security guards, the police, and the other fans there to protect them.
So, I tell myself that they are just taking advantage of the controlled environment. Besides, sometimes it pisses them off even more if you ignore them than if you react to them.
Unshod- I give you credit for doing your thing and enjoying yourself. People shouldn’t have to make that choice and tolerate that behavior when they take their family to a game.
LEVI: Thanks. As an O’s fan, there’s A LOT of crap that I have taken over the years……. Not just hostile fans from opposing teams! LOL
Sorry I cant keep up tonight, I am taking some notes to write something tomorrow. That god for being able to pause live TV.
the whole database thing scared me. Just saying. But hey, it’s your site 2-nite!
Just came in from the supermarket. Saw stacks of Tastykakes, then I heard on the radio that Jeter beat the Babe for #4 all time Yankee doubles.
BBT exclusive…Babe, how does it feel?
Shoe, you ignore the fans giving you the business, and then remember and remind me about slights made and apologized for MONTHS ago.
Familiarity breeds contempt.
ahahahahahhahaa
What’s up guys? It seems all these young, big prospect pitchers have pretty much the same profile. I am talking about Joba, Price, Kershaw, Hanson, etc. They can show flashes of brilliance, all walk a ton of guys, rarely see past the 6th. But, every team that faces them knows to wait them out. It’s a pattern now.
That is a very good point Mac and the only way to beat the pattern is to throw strikes consistently. I had the same feeling watching Hanson tonight. He threw 99 pitches in 5 innings and had 5 walks. That is unacceptable.
God the Yankees are flat out a boring team. Good grief right now they are about as exciting as watching paint dry.
Since putting up 15 runs vs. the Mets last Sunday, the Yankees have scored a grand total of 18 runs in 6 games & 7 innings since. Yuk!
Supe- Try watching both NY teams if you want to see boring.
Reason #793 I can’t stand Manuel- the offense isn’t doing anything against Piniero. Castillo walks to lead off the 6th inning and instead of bunting him over with Livan, Jerry puts Castillo in motion, Livan swings through a ball down and Castillo gets thrown out. Hernandez is an excellent bunter. The play was to bunt him over with 0 outs and get him into scoring position. Jerry knows better.
In the 8th inning it was:
MARLINS 6
ORIOLES 1
Now, it is
MARLINS 6
ORIOLES 6
Whoopee.
Levi, I think it is the way these guys are handled (babied?) and subsequently their lack of confidence in what every pitcher’s bread and butter should be, their fastball.
……. “Don’t tell me these O’s ain’t got not heart”……….
The Grateful Dead, 1978
Lev even the Mets…as decimated as their lineup has been this season…have at times shown more moxie than the Yankees. The Yankees are on the cusp of being shut out for the 2nd time in the last 5 games. They are about to move to 2-5 in their last 7 vs. the Nats, Marlins & Braves. Not good.
Supe, for whatever reason, this Yankee team for some time now struggles against pitchers they have never faced before. It is baffling. They will make guys like Nieve and Lannan look like stars and then hang 9 on someone like Santana. There has to be a reason but it makes no sense to me.
No sense makes sense seems to be the mantra dor the 09 Yankees thus far mac. They are about to move to 9 up 11 down for June, & we all know they are a Castillo brain cramp away from being 8-12.
Mac-babied is the right word.
I can’t believe that I just saw the Mets get 2 outs without throwing a pitch. Pujols drives in 2 to make it 3-1 first and second one out. Thurston gets picked off second and right behind that Pujols gets “caught stealing” when he takes off for second and Livan steps off and throws there. I didn’t expect to see that from Pujols.
I’ve never dissed the orioles OR your cats, Skin Walker.
I think the Yanks problems hinge on the fact that they are tied to their plans like a ball and a chain. If they don’t have stats and scouting reports and analyses, they just don’t catch up. They are this awesome machine that just doesn’t have a driver.
Girardi might not make the All-Star break.
If George was still running the show I would have bet on it.
I mean outside of Josh Johnson who have the Yankees faced in their last 7 that’s sooooo lights out that they have managed a grand total of 18 runs in their last 7 games? Frankly it’s embarrassing.
Why does Kevin Long still have a job??
Damn good question BR2.
He’s the Lord of the Clipboard
He’s the Lord of the Clipboard.
I’d rather watch drunken white trash get tasered on Tru TV. Least they show a little spunk. Yanks have NOTHING.
Whatever happened to Hank!?
Ha.. Lib. Plans. “The mob has plans, Gordon has plans, Girardi has plans” What the Yanks need is someone who can introduce a little… anarchy.
YES. A little mojo. A little spice. A little craziness.
No mojo on this team.
All…JRZ will be writing the Yankee blip tomorrow. Special guest blogger, because he volunteered. Don’t forget to check out Uncle Sal’s Take.
You could take that whole Joker monologue and give it to Cashman and Hal and it would be just as relevant.
The thing is everyone fears the Joker. No one fears these guys. They hit about 8 or 9 over .500 and took a vacation.
wtf is going with these guys?!

That’s it. I have to go to bed. I can’t take it.
It is more than that. They are following the “plan”, a plan that was laid out in the late 90′s for a completely different team. They approach every at bat by a text book if they have no feel for the pitcher and every one of these mediocre pitchers know it. So they pour first pitch strikes in over and over because they know they will follow the Yanks will follow the “plan”. Next thing you know the hitters are down in the count and are making outs. It happens game in and game out against these pitchers they haven’t sen before.
That’s exactly it. Watching these games is like reading a flowchart.
And Kevin Long was unhappy that Cano was swinging at first pitch strikes (and getting hits BTW) because he wanted his hitters to see a lot of pitches early in the game.
There are no in game adjustments happening. A pitcher comes out and shows he is offering the first pitch and Girardi and Long keep saying take the pitch. Do they need to wait for the next day’s pitch f/x data to tell them that maybe the hitters should swing at the first pitch?
The coaches take the heat on this team because most of these guys have made it to the big show already as players. Who’s the champ-eenee on the Yankee staff? Who?
I can’t take it. Can’t. Gonna go read some Poe. It’s uplifting after this zombie parade.
ahahahahahahahaha
Not one. This coaching staff show no ability to improvise. They are coaching out of a book and not acknowledging what is actually happening on the field. You see it in the hitters approach, the bullpen management, lineup choices, etc. I’m yearning for a guy like Bobby V right now.
Follow it up with some Joyce and a stiff shot, Lib, and that is a good night.
Be careful what you wish for Mac- 15 years and he never won a division title.
Maybe a little Strindberg too…
