Joba the Kid Deals Death Down in Tampa

Yanks win.
Standings.
The Devil Rays met the business end of a good night of dealing for Joba Chamberlain, who has broke from a string of mediocre starts – and a couple of stinkers – to spin two gems in a row.  Yanks looked stellar last night, save a discouraging Brian Bruney.  The series ends in the Yanks’ basket.  A total of five bullpen arms in 5 1/3 innings were used in the series.  Phil Coke has been making me tired just looking at him lately.
No news is good news on the trade front.  J.P Ricciardi has all but turned the lights out, but you never know until the dust clears.
Carlos Beltran on the mend

Yankees Stumble ::: Mets Rumble

Yankees loseMets win.
Standings.
The series with the Rays is tied at a game apiece.  The Yanks suffered a team bad hair day, as throws careened into foul territory, pops dropped, swings missed, and generally mayhem, um, mayhemmed.  The intriguingly good news is that Mark Melancon threw 2.1 innings of no-run ball in a non-mop-up situation (NOMOUSIT), not only saving the bullpen cream for if/when the Yanks can actually make outs and score runs tonight but also, perhaps, indicating a lengthening plan for the young ox.  Has he been secretly throwing under cover of camoflage netting these past weeks?  Is he the new long man?  With CMW officially out for the count (no surprises there), Girardi & Clipboard Inc. should be… (more…)

Yanks Park It in Tampa ::: Tatis Pinches Granny

Yanks winMets win.
StandingsSchedule.
Quite the night for the long ball.  Nick Swisher is showing all signs that he’s ready to have another April, while Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano have shown that April is completely in the past.  Hard to figure out what “the story” is here – Yanks put a shellaque’ing on TB at the plate and A.J. Burnett went seven innings deep for no earned runs like he was cutting a birthday cake.  Tonight, it’s CC vs. Kazmir.
Quite the night for the grand slam.  Fernando Tatis delivered something fierce in the clutch in front of a packed house.  Dan Murphy batted cleanup and dropped bunts.  I don’t what the eef to say about this team anymore. … (more…)

Whose House? Yanks' House ::: Mets Triple-Cripple 'Stros

Yank winMets win.
StandingsSchedule.
So what?  So let’s dance!  Today is the third day of the rest of Brian Bruney’s life.  Sergio Mitre looked a little weak even the Yanks are in “unbeatable” mode.  Albaladejo has been called up from Triple-A, where he has not started any games.  So who gets the next spot start?  Who turns the rotation over in August and September?  One of these guys?  In the absence of Brett Gardner, Girardi still doesn’t want to use AJax yet:
Girardi said that infielder Ramiro Pena, who was sent down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to work in the outfield for possible future use, would be a consideration. He said the Yankees have not talked about… (more…)

Yanks Sink in the Seventh; Mets Rope-A-Dope 'Stros

Yanks loseMets win.
Yanks’ admission to cloud 9 just expired.  You know what happens: s-blank-blank-blank.
I give 120% credit to the Mets for every solitary game they win.  It’s hard to build any power on a punch off the ropes.  Today at 1pm, it’s Dallas Braden vs. Sergio Mitre (miter I says!).  Today at 2pm, it’s Livan Hernandez vs. Brian Moehler.
The Phils turned down a Roy Halladay offerThis guy is a worthy target for acquisition, but so was Nick Swisher in November ’08.  Never know who the Yanks are really gaming for these days.  Them weeds are purty high.

Yanks Stunt A's; Houston Guns Down Mets

Yanks winMets lose.
Standings.
A’s starter Brett Anderson did a good job of shutting down 3-4-5-6 but these Yanks, when healthy, have too many weapons to keep down consistently.  Joba went seven innings deep with only 100 pitches, and that’s only the first time in his career that he’s gone 6 2/3 innings in back-to-back starts.  They got a little sloppy in the ninth.  Put a net to Jorge Posada’s right.  Today at 1pm, it’s Andy Pettitte vs. Gio Gonzalez.
Johan Santana is a stallion, a clydesdale, the alpha husky, whatever you want to call him – as long as it’s acknowledged just how utterly alone he is out there in pulling the cart.  Right now, I would pay more to… (more…)

Yanks Beat Up On Vinny From Hackensack

Yanks win.
Standings.
The young A’s handed in their permission slips and are taking a field trip from McAfee Coliseum this week.  Mazzaro held out as long as he could but with this Yankee lineup firing on all 8, something has to give.  Someone call up Larry Bowa.  Yes, I know that Matt Holliday has a way better arm than Johnny Damon.  Tex swinging on 3-0…I like it.  CC…worth every penny.  Tonight, it’s Brett Anderson vs. Joba Chamberlain.
Mark Buehrle did something more rare than a solar eclipse.  This Wise fella will go down in history, too.  Did you see the fan in the Yankee jersey right by the rail.  HOW FUNNY WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN?

Yanks Stack a Game onto Division Lead ::: Mets Punch Out Early

Yanks winMets lose.
Standings.
I was out and about all of yesterday, seeing big donut specialists and confirming that the oven’s working properly.  I had no eyes on the game, thus, no snappy Libertyisms for the chaps today. Looking over the comments…thanks to, I believe it was Nooger who delivered a nice number yesterday – .500 ball from here on out means 90 wins, right in Shoe’s sweet spot for playoff-making.  Nick Swisher is picking it up again.
Matsui-san, you are an honorable employee.
For those of you that missed Ghost’s Bernazard drop  yesterday, here’s a fellow blogger that just about collects every recent/historical link out there to paint a picture of starving anarchy in the Mets’ offices.  That said,… (more…)

Yanks Are Number 1 ::: Mets Are Just Plain Numb

Yanks winMets lose.
Current standings.
Nothing to gloat on just yet, here it is July whatever-th and the Yanks have the second best record in baseball with a lot of game to play.  Sergio Mitre is not a big man but he put up a fight, and it was enough to stall the dangerously improved Orioles until the big bats got in the game.  ARod has been quite the show lately.  Xavier Nady isn’t missed, neither is Brian Bruney nor Jose Veras.  As a note, Tampa Bay is again showing signs of life.  Toughest division in baseball.  Yanks go at 1:05pm today, Burnett vs. Berken.
Big John Lannan stayed on top of the Mets and ahead in the count.  The Mets couldn’t catch… (more…)

HOTsui! ::: Livan Exacts Revenge on Villainous Nationals

Yanks winMets win.
Hideki Matsui had been quietly swinging the bat well – until last night, when he stopped being so quiet.  Cream-Pie-San waited through launch delays, the countdown ticked to 2-2, and then he lit a rocket to right-center that didn’t fall back to earth.  Jose Molina again raised the bar on defensive catching, just when you thought Francisco Cervelli had him licked.  Belly fat doesn’t keep the grizzly bear from moving well, either.  Robbie Cano had dual-deeks.  Mark Teixeira owns first base.
The first-place tie with the Red Sox even has Hal Steinbrenner docking his yacht just long enough to offer a couple of soundbites.  OK, that’s enough of that gumshoe stuff, boys.  The weather is opening and Bermuda is waiting. … (more…)

Joba Straightens Up; Nieve Keels Over

Yanks winMets lose.
Yanks squeezed a tight sweep out of the Tigers, but more importantly, Joba squeezed off 8 K’s and only 3 BB’s versus a team on the ropes at the same moment that Boston was hitting the mat.  That’s the kind of win you need to see to believe that the Kid is on his way.  T&A won the day.  Whatever happened to Brett Gardner?
Fernando Nieve strained a hammy, just when you thought the boo-hoo meter was redlining.  It’s time for Jerry Manuel to get tossed from a game or something.  I’m speechless at this point – bring back the old home run apple, murder a chicken, do something to get some good mojo flowing.
