I was out and about all of yesterday, seeing big donut specialists and confirming that the oven’s working properly. I had no eyes on the game, thus, no snappy Libertyisms for the chaps today. Looking over the comments…thanks to, I believe it was Nooger who delivered a nice number yesterday – .500 ball from here on out means 90 wins, right in Shoe’s sweet spot for playoff-making. Nick Swisher is picking it up again.
Matsui-san, you are an honorable employee.
For those of you that missed Ghost’s Bernazard drop yesterday, here’s a fellow blogger that just about collects every recent/historical link out there to paint a picture of starving anarchy in the Mets’ offices. That said, Angel Pagan was the entire offense yesterday as Mike Pelfrey wasted seven solid innings vs. the Nats. On top of that, Jose Castillo quietly called Blue a “pedder-ass” and got himself tossed. I wonder what he’s calling Barnyard these days.

Sounds good bro…can’t wait to see them. Buehrle/Unit/Sandy/Cy Young. Ryan never threw a perfecto correct? Some elite company Buehrle’s in…3 of the top 10 pitchers of all time wouldn’t you say?
They found their eighth inning guy and now you want to screw around after it took 4 months to find him?
Danger Mac.
There may be more Supe. Just double checking.
If Wang doesn’t come back the Yanks are going to need another starter. Kennedy is hurt. It is either a trade or Hughes/Aces.
Is this ginzaloop we just knocked out of the game a local product? I haven’t been paying attention but since he has a pretty large rooting section I assume he’s a local boy?
Jim Bunning did it too Supe.
I say trade mac…don’t mess w/ that pen right now. Speaking of which isn’t Joba on an innings count this season?
Cano did that on purpose.
It will take 4 or 5 starts to get Hughes back up to length.
Moving him into the eighth inning role and then moving him back at this point is not a good move. Mitre pitched well enough against a good hitting team to get a couple of more starts.
Wow so 5 guys eh? I wouldn’t have thought it would have been that many…it’s such a rare, and obviously difficult accomplishment.
I had Joba figured for 150 which would give him around 4 more starts if he can avg. 6 per. That would leave him 25 1 inn. appearances out of the pen not counting the post season.BUT, like I said, cashman aint returning my calls so I dont know what the plan is.
Yep, Supe. That’s the thing. If Wang is down for the season and Joba hits his limit they need a fifth starter. And it isn’t going to be Kei Igawa.
Not sure they CAN move Hughes back to the rotation w/ out getting another arm for the rotation.I would rather see Hughes get stretched out at SWB and I dont know that they have that luxary.Joba could step right into his spot but who steps into the rotation while Phil is in pennsyltucky?
5 guys is pretty impressive considering there have only been 18 perfect games.
I think you have to have a plan in place, barring a trade, to have either Hughes or Aces ready to go into the rotation as Joba moves to the pen once he hits his limit.
No doubt Mitre…at the very least…has earned @ least 2 more starts. jrz I mean there’s no way they’re gonna move Joba to the pen right? Then (assuming of course we’ve seen the last of CMW for 2009) they would need to fill 2 starting spots. If (God willing) the Yankees make postseason they obviously will need a 4th starter.
agreed Mac.
Joba is at 95 ip. I have heard more than once that 160 is his number. Joba will be in the rotation.
You just solved the eighth inning issue that everyone was ranting about for 2 months and you want to move him back to starting this year?
There are more than 10 starts left for the #4 pitcher, Levi. Unless they are going to expand his innings limit he is going to the pen eventually.
He’s a five inning pitcher through 18 starts Mac. That gives him 12-13 more starts.
Assuming that 160 IP limit is accurate Lev’s right Joba will be in the rotation. CC/AJ/Pet/Joba would be the rotation, Ace & Hugesy remain in the pen. I could live w/ that come the tournament.
You don’t just shift guys back and forth on a whim. You are so concerned with all kinds of limits on these guys and then they are going to go from starting every fifth day- to throwing balls out every other day and back to starting every fifth day again?
It’s not the right thing for Hughes.
hey jrz what’s the word on that gig bro…is it a done deal?
work?
Not just me thinking about it, Cashman is too:
“Right now, if we didn’t do anything and we had another problem, we’d be taking Hughes or Aceves out of the bullpen and into the rotation. It’s as simple as that. That’s been talked about internally and externally. We’ll continue to look at the pitching. The obvious injury to Wang right now has hurt. Ian Kennedy’s aneurysm has hurt. The transferring of Hughes and Aceves to the bullpen has taken away immediate choices for the rotation. There is a depth issue that is real.”
He’s a five inning pitcher because he goes deep in every inning. If he is more economical with his pitches than he goes 6 or 7 and you don’t have to worry about the dopey innings limit because he is still throwing 100 pitches. I told Lib in one of his first starts that we won’t see him throw 110 pitches this year.
The simple act of walking out to the mound to start another inning is a ridiculous way to monitor how much wear and tear is being inflicted on a pitcher’s arm.
I remember that conversation Levi, concerning 110 pitches.I dont think he has hit that yet.Maybe once.
That’s apples and oranges Mac. Taking Joba out of the rotation isn’t another injury. It’s a voluntary action. Aceves was the option the last time that issue arose BTW.
A Month Yankee Universe was up in arms about the eighth inning situation and why Joba had to go to the pen. They were asking Cashman this every day. How many times did he and Girardi have to answer the question of whether any internal discussions had taken place? Now that it has been solved “we’ll just move Hughes to the rotation”. There is some short term memory loss going on here just because they are winning.
Yeah, I think the innings limit things is something that is written about but I don’t think that is what the organization actually goes by. It is used as an approximation to start the year, a target. But they certainly take into account how many pitches he is throwing. That is why I don’t think Joba will have a 160ip year. It will be less because of how many pitches he has actually thrown.
He hasn’t thrown that many pitches Mac. They are yanking him around 100 pitches every time out.
He has 2 108 games J.
Well, if an injury happens to one of the starting five today the options are Kei Igawa or Ivan Nova if you don’t move Aces or Hughes back to the rotation. My first choice would actually be Aces. Hughes is young and you don’t want to be yo yoing him back and forth.
yeah work jrz…I thought you said last week you were on the verge of starting a new job…or am I mistaken? BTW YES already showing the Castillo drop as a Yankee classic. From what I recall that was a pretty awful game by both teams…outside of the end result, of course. Is Sabbats going the distance tonight? Or do they go Ace for the 8th & 9th, or Ace 8th, Hughes 9th?
Right, but 100 pitches gets most other pitchers into the 6th/7th. It has typically gotten Joba into the 5th. So, you have to take that into account. It adds up over all those starts.
Wang wasn’t ready to pitch and it has killed them. Someone made an excellent point the other day about Bruney and Wang having the same injury last year and both having arm problems this year. Coincidence? Maybe.
It also could be that they were favoring the other leg and it screwed up their deliveries. Bingo. Arm issues.
Wang’s delivery was definitely not right early.
He’s thrown 1669 game pitches in 18 starts. How many pitches were they expecting to get out of him per start?
Waiting on my TWIC card, Supe.I am in the 2-4 week window now.Once I get my card I am good to go.I have a few other things going on and expect to be in La. no later than Sept. 1st.I know it keeps changing, it was June, then the week after the 4th of July and so on BUT, the bills are paid and I am spending more time w/ the kid than I have in a long time so I aint complaining.
whoever made the point about Bruney and Wang w/ the same injury and now both having arm problems is all over it like the A’s were on CC early tonight.
I hate to say it but it might have been Kim Jones on the FAN last week J.
I was hoping it was somebody in here……ruiner
Mac-I understand your point about 5 ip becoming the new 6/7 because of his pitch counts. They had this guy penciled in for 25 starts-6ip/start-100 pitches. Things are never that clean and Hughes being the go to guy in the eighth was probably way down the list of contingencies.
Bruney wasn’t on the mound long enough to see him pitch.
We talked about Wang’s mechanics being screwed up before Eiland did.
Well, you have one of the starts where he was pulled after 14 pitches. So, if you are looking for 100 pitches per start then he is about on target. We don’t know what his next starts will be like. But, you have to have a plan in place.
way down….BUT, when it looked like they were gonna send Hughes down, I was leading the charge to see him out of the pen and I spoke of his demeanor before we ever saw him in relief….look it up.
Good to hear jrz…sounds like things are workin out well for you. You & the Mrs got one kid? Boy if that Robbie’s not careful he might win hisself a gold glove someday…maybe this year. In fact the right side of the Yankee infield could bring home the gold in 09, as Tex is a virtual shoe in for the award @ 1B. And I think it’s safe to say that so far, each the 3 big Yankee FA pickups have worked out pretty well. Obviously the ultimate test & barometer is in October but so far so good. AJ was a little shaky early on, CC’s been solid & Tex looks like an MVP candidate.
They are up a creek if someone goes down as Joba is running up against his limits. We’ll see how hard they stick to the limits if that happens.
Yes J you did and I said if they were going to use him when Joba reached his ceilings then they better keep him stretched out in Scranton. Now they are reaching the point where they will have to start stretching him out to start as he has become the eighth inning guy.
One or the other.
Yep, 1 Supe.My pride n joy turned 17 today.
