We don’t know who will be in the post-season yet. Even if we assume that a couple of teams will make it (such as The Yankees), you don’t know how well each pitcher will be throwing in late September. Plus, if there is a close race to the playoffs, you may have to use your best two pitchers on the last two days of the season, meaning they would not be available to start a game until at least Game Two, maybe Game Three. If The Mets had made it last year, Santana would not have pitched Game One, and probably would not have pitched Game Two, either, because he pitched a Complete Game on the next to the last day of the season..

Say it is Halos vs Yanks. Game 1 CC loses to Weaver, game 2 AJ picks up against Lackey, game 3 Pettite loses against Saunders. I might want to see Hughes face off against Santana and have CC ready for game 5 against CC at home.

You have to win Game 4 to get to Game 5. Girardi would lose his job the next day if Phil Hughes lost that game while CC was waiting to pitch Game 5.
