The young A’s handed in their permission slips and are taking a field trip from McAfee Coliseum this week. Mazzaro held out as long as he could but with this Yankee lineup firing on all 8, something has to give. Someone call up Larry Bowa. Yes, I know that Matt Holliday has a way better arm than Johnny Damon. Tex swinging on 3-0…I like it. CC…worth every penny. Tonight, it’s Brett Anderson vs. Joba Chamberlain.
Mark Buehrle did something more rare than a solar eclipse. This Wise fella will go down in history, too. Did you see the fan in the Yankee jersey right by the rail. HOW FUNNY WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN?

morning fellas. here is an interesting read on Halladay situation.
http://thestar.blogs.com/baseball/
Why would JP say Roy told us he wanted to test the free agent market? How does that help him unload Doc? Especially since they stated no new contract or extension talks are part of any deal.
it would seem hard to imagine any team buying this crap JP is trying to sell.
Age of innocence. Get back to basics fellas. Later.
You are one funny bastard ghost.
Need something to get me through watching our mets these days Kev
That kid needs a Mets hat and tennis racket
That’ll be his outfit in October.
“wear your mets outfit if you are going to get filthy”
flashbacks
ahahahaha
That Wise catch yesterday put me in a good mood about the game as a whole even though the Mets are stinking up the joint.
Good Morning Gents…this from the AP via ESPN.com: With Wang sidelined and former starters Phil Hughes and Alfredo Aceves now in the bullpen, the Yankees would like to have more starting pitching depth in case of another injury.
“We know that we’re a little thin,” manager Joe Girardi said.
In other news, Cashman and Girardi said the Yankees still plan to keep 23-year-old starter Joba Chamberlain on an innings limit this season, though they didn’t divulge details.
Cashman said Chamberlain would not be shut down before the end of the regular season, and Girardi said it’s possible the right-hander could shift back to the bullpen at some point this year to prevent him from surpassing his innings limit.
“Nothing’s changed,” Cashman said. “It’s not a new plan.”
And it’s not an issue that will become pressing in the next couple of weeks, Cashman said.
Chamberlain, mostly a starter in college and the minors, emerged as a dominant setup reliever when he reached the majors late in 2007. He was moved to the rotation in the middle of last season and there’s been much debate in New York about where he belongs.
“There’s a lot of different things that we could do,” Girardi said. “As time goes on we’re going to evaluate him. There’s nothing that’s completely in stone.”
Scheduled to start Friday night against Oakland, Chamberlain is 5-2 with a 4.05 ERA in 18 starts covering 95 2-3 innings.
unbelievable moment. not only great concentration in getting back to the wall and timing the leap, but staying with the ball out of his glove to the ground. Given the circumstances around him, may be one of the greatest plays I have ever seen (given the surrounding circumstances that is).
timo right up there too!
morning fellas.
Halladay is gonna make some team contenders for the next two years, with a very good chance that possibly WS Rings can be obtained. For teams that haven’t already spent $424 million on FA’s I think it’s a deal that would be worth it. It would be worth it for the Yanks but when is enough enough? I agree with the enough is enough chatter i’ve heard on the radio. Although I wouldn’t cry in my vino if he came here.
Halladay will be 34 years old at the end of his present deal, if he wants to test the fA market after that, go for it Roy, we’ll grab the two top draft choices you get from losing a type A FA. Chances are you’d be in the same boat your in now by adding some nice chips.Plus you’ve raised your chances of getting that Ring up quite a bit this year and next
Unless Henry is laying in the weeds the Halladay deal doesn’t seem to be what Boston has been preaching the last few years, although the Nation is getting antsy, but that should change after the next 10 games.
If I’m the Mets I do the deal just to keep him out of Philly, or it’s gonna be a long two years in Flushing. That’s not exactly a pitchers paradise so maybe he doesn’t go there to stay, just to get a ring
Thanks for the drops Ghost.
super–I note that your pre-season predicition of 98 victories for the Yankees is right on track. On another note, Brett Gardner looks totally exposed against any good lefty and his best offensive move is to not swing and pray for a walk. Reminds me of Little League.
Hey Supe, nice drop, they better go buy some pitching if Joba is gonna shift to the bull pen. I also heard they can skip some of his starts if they manage it with days off, they’re looking for 160 innings out of him, but that’s not confirmed.
Morning Sally the Mets IMO should deal for Doc for 3 reasons: 1) dealing for Doc deflects some attention away from this Bernazard fiasco, 2) dealing for Doc IMO makes them the chalk pick for the NL East in 2010 & a very live pick for making it to the WS in ’10, & 3) if the Mets don’t extend him after ’10 (which they in all likelihood won’t) as you said they get the 2 picks when he walks as a type A free agent.
Nooger – I mentioned lastnight that Gardners walk by not swinging up 3-0 in count lastnight ( went to 3-2) screamed “i cant hit but have wheels”
Mets should trade fro Doc because they would then have the best 1,2 combo in the game for the next three years ( at least).
Im not worried about 2013.
1986 for god sake.
kev—he’s maddening to me and if he was on any other team–especially a team not doing well–he’d be history. He does have a great 60 yard lob wedge though.
Morning Sal, Ghost, Nooger, Kev, Supe, all.
Skimming over last night’s thread, which was a whole lot of bandying back and forth into the wee hours of the morning regarding Joba. Great stuff.
happy belated bday to Mini-Jrz aka The Kid. Trying to keep an eye on your old man ain’t easy, Kid!
Also, did I see Super mention an anniversary?
TY noogs I’m impressed that you recall me capping the Bombers for 98 wins…still have a long way to go but my prediction (for the 1st time all season) is looking stronger than ever. 90+ wins seems assuredly in the cards @ this juncture, but we’ll see. Sally me jrz lev & mac we’re debating the Joba remains in rotation/goes to the BP question late last night. They are one injury away (God Forbid) w/ CC/AJ/Pet from being in a pretty precarious situation w/ the starting staff, which is why I personally am in favor of dealing for a starter & leaving Ace & Hughes in the pen.
I would love to see the Mets get Doc. It would be great for New York, renew fan interest and set them up for a fresh start and alot of promise next year.
Nooger – I’m going to let your boy Cano slide on his lack of hustle lastnight.
By the way, Giants are 10-1 ( Super Bowl odds). I’ll take it. Im sure you know camp opens on 8/3.
Anyone know why Adrian Gonzalez is batting .248? I wonder if he is available. ( I would love to have a gold glove 1B too)
On board with Super. Don’t weaken two positions. I’d rather the Yanks keep a strong pen and hop around a little bit every fifth turn. Noog, I would love to see that too but the more Ghost shows me about that Mets organization, the less I feel they are either attractive to free agents or potential suitors for a game-changing trade. It’s amazing what a couple of years’ can make as far as how an organization looks. Is it still fallout from Madoff, are the Mets in the horse latitudes right now as a result?
Morning LB yup tomorrow will be 11 grueling years @ the controls w/ the Mrs. & I must say she’s done more than an admirable job of putting up w/ the sports, heavy metal & all around petulant behavior that I exhibit from time to time. When I’m particularly insolent I simply remind her I could have been a guido & a Mets fan instead of a headbanger & a Yankees fan. That usually does the trick.
supe–the team has to beat up on the .500 or lower opponents, play lights out at home, and battle the good teams tooth and nail on the road. Some teams give up in September, play their call-ups, so the victories can pile up. Right now—Boston has some real offensive questions–Bay slumping badly and Drew, Varitek, and Ortiz–all within 5 points of each other in batting average. (.233-.228) Pedroia and Youkilis, while doing acceptable, are no where near their ’08 production.
LB – The Mets are an attractive organization for any FA that is not “anti-NY”. They play in the biggest market in the country and a brand new ballpark.
Cano makes me pull my hair out sometimes, Kevin. He could be so much better. His pitch selection at the plate is also maddening, but he still hits the ball hard many, many times. His defense has been stellar this year. I also think that he would be very hard for the Yankees to replace and remember that when so many fans call for his trade.
Spot on Noogs the Pink Hat O really having a tough go @ it right now…gee don’t we feel terrible about that? Kev Big Blue 10-1 odds to get to SB44? Don’t wanna mush ‘em but that’s a steal…I think they’re the class of the NFC. A buddy of mine @ work still thinks they need a top shelf wideout…I think as presently constructed pound for pound the Giants are one of the best looking teams heading into this season.
Kev–I’m ready for Giants Camp. Parking pass for the entire time is only $15 and there are no other charges. I am not an autograph guy, but they are so easy to get here. I think we need a kicker—especially someone to go deep on kickoffs and someone who can do better in the wind at the swamp.
happy happy supernaut. 11 years…insolence…hahaha
Mets have to dump the amateur-ish staff, in that case, Kev. Halladay probably called Santana on the World Class Aces red phone and got the skinny on Warthen, the training staff, Barnyard in the clubhouse braiding hair and telling lies, etc. True they are big market but they have to act it. They were big market 10 years ago, 15 years ago, 20 years ago. 3 years ago they seemed to play the part, at least at face value. Now, they are looking weaker than they should.
its playing in new york big….yeah
I did hear someplace that the Wilpons were hurt much more by the Bernie Madoff rip-off than has generally been reported.
I heard $300M at first. That’s staggering.
LB – Ya make it seem like the Mets have stunk the last three years. Granted they shit the bed but they were right there.
This year has been a disaster so far.
Nooger – can has been playing a slick, smotth 2B. Making it look easy most of the time. I bashed hiom for not walking and/or stealing but he doesnt really have to with this team and ballpark.
sorry for the bad typing. multi tasking not a strength.
Francesa was saying yesterday that Jon Lester is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He sure does have a great arm–but look at his stats this year–7-6 with an ERA almost 4. One of the best pitchers? The woods are full of guys with those numbers
Cano has a big powerful ass–he’ll never be a base stealer–but he will always drive the ball
Speaking of Wilpon, where the hell is he and his spoon fed son Jeff?
No, they haven’t stunk, not at all…let me be clear, I mean to say right now they don’t look like they have the machinery on staff and in the offices and on the farm to back up the talent they are putting on the field in that big money press called Citi Field. Make no mistake, they have plenty of talent on that field WHEN HEALTHY. But the support systems for that talent is where the failure lies IMO.
Perhaps that’s why Minaya made such a big deal in the press about “talent evaluation”, perhaps – hear me out – that was not so much directed at the fans but at the Wilpons…so far as to say, “I fielded a good team, that was my job, it’s the support systems that failed.”
A firing is on the way.
After the disappointment in’07 and ’08 and now what’s happened this year—I look for the Mets to clean house. If attendance gets as bad as many people think it will in the next 2 months–they almost have to.
LB thx for the well wishes brother. I’m gonna start calling Cano Grey Goose…cuz he’s so smooth in the field. I know it’s easy to knock him but IMO it’s because his defensive play looks so undemanding. But the guy’s got good range to his right, & he makes that side arm throw to 1B across his body w/ his momentum carrying him towards 2B better than anyone I’ve seen in quite a while…plus he’s one of the top offensive 2B in MLB. IMO he’s rebounded quite nicely thus far from his pedestrian 08 campaign. Hasn’t looked shiftless this year. What’s not to like?
Actually, was it me or did Cano actually look fast…between the time he lollygagged out of the box and got thrown out by twelve steps, of course.
I think when you own a team in NY you have your hands on the concessions, TV, a new modern stadium, the dough is flowing. the Mets even have Citi money. A high roller would overcome the Madoff thing because of the cash flow involved and the bulging jockstrap. I really think the Wilpon’s should sell the team if they don’t have the sac to play with the big boys. I also think they have to much trust in Omar, while he may be a decent baseball man, I think he’s getting trumped by younger GM’s around baseball. Cashman can afford to get trumped, he’s got a lot of dough to bail him out. Although his acquisitions this year were great. In the past he’s spent tons of money with no return
Hello, sports fans.
Thanks for the 411, ghost.
Here’s Jon Heyman’s latest on the top players that might be available.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jon_heyman/07/24/daily.scoop/index.html?eref=sihpT1
Nice take LB.
I like Omar as a person ( even after the sloppy Willie incident) but Im coming around to the notion that he has to go ( or get demoted to Bernazards current position).
Should have better depth with 140 mil to spend even if he thinks he needs more.
