Non-Tender Roundup

The crowded free agent flea market just got even more hectic.  The following players have filed for free agency after being non-tendered contracts by their clubs at the deadline over the weekend:

C John Buck, 3B Garrett Atkins, C Raul Chavez, 1B Ryan Garko, C Shawn Riggans, C Mike Rivera, 3B Matthew Brown, 2B Kelly Johnson, 1B Josh Whitesell

RF Brian Anderson,  LF Ryan Langerhans, RF Josh Anderson, LF Jeremy Reed, LF Cory Sullivan, RF Gabe Gross, CF Alfredo Amezaga, LF Jonny Gomes (LFer?  Jeez, but he looked so comfortable in right field.)

DH Jack Cust

RHP Mark Worrell, RHP Jackson Quezada, RHP Adam Miller, RHP Anthony Reyes, RHP Jose Veras (remember him?), RHP Lance Broadway (remember him?), RHP Brian Bass, RHP Matt Capps, RHP Mike MacDougal, LHP Scott Olsen, RHP Clay Condrey, LHP Neal Cotts, RHP Mark DiFelice, LHP Phil Dumatrait, RHP Chien-Ming Wang, RHP Seth McClung, RHP Dustin Moseley, RHP Tim Redding, RHP Jose Arredondo

Given that most of these players will likely sign for much less than they were worth versus, say, 2008 valuations, this 2009 offseason should factor intriguingly into the agreement negotiations with the MLBPA in 2011.  The big question is how the owners will roll with the punches through an economically exhausted market in 2010.

Meanwhile, at least one blogger has declared Johnny Damon the biggest loser from the 2009 Swap Meet Winter Meetings.  Johnny and his mad dash to third base have all my sympathies, but business is business and life is Grand.

  1. …and, he’s type B!!!

  2. Doesnt solve the #2 hitter against lefties tho.

  3. Yanks have plenty of muscle against lefties. I think you put that in the same bin as “you have to have a nine hitter” kind of “deal with it”.

  4. I’m OK with Lackey and Cameron in Boston. I’m OK with Doc in Philly too (anywhere but Boston).

But Matsui goin Hollywood saddens me.

    Just sayen.

  5. TO HOTSUI!!!!

  6. Time to stop fuckin around with Damon, offer a 3rd year vesting option if he throws out ONE damn runner at the plate during the first 2 years of the contract(someone else here at BBT had the idea before me, can’t remember who it was, and I like it).

Nobody was better at hitting in the 5 hole to protect Big Al than Matsui. In ’07, Al hit .320-something with RISP. Without Matsui and Posada behind him in the lineup, he dropped 50 points to around .270, and the Yankees run production dropped along with it. So who hits fifth now, Damon or no Damon? CG?

  7. I still think Damon has a shot at coming back, at the end of the day, who wants him? I never dreamed this deal would go down like this, the Halladay deal that is, i never thought about Seattle. Joe Urbon must be on his 15th beer also J, what’s he do with Bay now? hahaha John Henry and Lucchino have Theo tied up and gaged, Bay is gonna get signed next then he’s gonna trade for Gonzalez an empty out Theo’s farm system. And here i thought SHAUGHNESSY was helping with that bridge article.

  8. Sorry, I should’ve been clearer, the 50 point drop in Big Al’s BA with RISP was during ’08.

  9. Hank could snap if they get gonzalez, here comes holliday. Is Hank still in the mix?

  10. regardless Natural your right, Matsui gone is a sad day in mudville. I may need help to get to sleep tonight, and to think last winter I wanted matsui on the first plane to Japan.

  11. I dunno how the dollar tree shakes out with Lee going there, but can Bay still be a possibility for going to Seattle? SOMEBODY’S offering him serious coin for his guy to publicly tell the Red Sox to go scratch, no?

  12. Agreed Nat,they should have kept Matsui. They should do a deal with Seattle and get Lee

  13. Yeah, Sally, Matsui was one of my favorites. To lose him for $6.5MM, Cash and Joe the Binder musta really not wanted him back.

If Theo gets Gonzo (which I don’t think will happen, but wtf do I know?), Yankees need a serious bat to keep up, don’t they?

Again, who hits behind Tex and Al, to make sure they get pitches to hit?

  14. Maybe not, I just remembered what somebody said right here a while back, Gonzo just replaces Bay’s production.

  15. I’m gonna let it go after this one last mention (for today at least), but Godzilla has a heart as big as his gargantuan head. That oughta be worth something in people’s eyes.

  16. Native – who hits behind Tex and Al, to make sure they get pitches to hit?

    how about this

    Jeter SS
    Damon DH
    Tex 1B
    ARod 3B
    Holliday LF
    Posada C
    Gandy CF
    Cano 2b
    Melky RF

  17. I agree with Lev…if Holliday is not signed in 2 weeks the Yankees swoop in to get him…him and they will take a flyer on Sheets

  18. That’s a good line up blood!!

  19. I dont think you have to worry about what the Sux do Sal if you add say a Ben Sheets or a fully recovered CMW with his sinker back to that lineup with the pitching we already have

  20. Hey Sal I remember you being in Italy…what part of Italy you from?? I was born in Abbruzzi

  21. How many times has MARIANO RIVERA led The American League is SAVES ???

    coltsoriolesbullet December 14, 2009 at 11:15 pm
  22. Take a guess ………

    coltsoriolesbullet December 14, 2009 at 11:16 pm
  23. Cashman needs to bring in a starter so this could get expensive. If boston gets gonzo, Cashman might go for it. Right now the Yanks have to look at Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Dice, Buchholz, Wakefield, the good guys roll out Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes, Gaudin, Meat-Tray, Aceves. If Joba and Hughes fulfill our dreams we’re good to go. This is gonna get good moving forward

  24. How many times has MARIANO RIVERA led The American League in SAVES ???

    coltsoriolesbullet December 14, 2009 at 11:19 pm
  25. 3X

  26. JRZ got it.

    coltsoriolesbullet December 14, 2009 at 11:21 pm
  27. I cheated.

  28. Ahhhhh. What would you have guessed if you didn’t look ???

    coltsoriolesbullet December 14, 2009 at 11:25 pm
  29. I’m not from Italy Blood I’m from upstate NY. I was in Italy in the spring making the donuts for a week. My Uncle’s roots are in Abbruzzi. I’m Calabrese, born in the USA, my Grandparents were from the old country

  30. 1 or 2.

  31. 1 or 2 ??????? I would have said 6 or 7. It’s amazing that with all his success that he has only led the league 3 times. I was surprised when I saw that it was only 3 times in his 14-year career.

    coltsoriolesbullet December 14, 2009 at 11:31 pm
  32. I meant to say Italian heritage Sal…a paesano *LOL* as are a few others on here I’m sure…not me – right off the damn boat…I have been in Canada for 53 years…. I may reclaim my citizenship and retire there.

  33. Check that ….. 15-year career for Mariano rivera.

    coltsoriolesbullet December 14, 2009 at 11:32 pm
  34. cd, your lineup would be a resounding answer to my question. If that’s what they have in mind, and if that’s the way it shakes out, I’m with it.

  35. And Sheets would also be a great move.

  36. I am pretty sure we are going to need a front line pitcher….I have lost my faith in Joba and Phil if he starts will have rules of his own…I would take a flyer on Sheets but not at 12M…maybe a contract like Andy’s last year……we get Holliday and Sheets and JD at 8-9M a year and we will be ok for 28

  37. I’ll catch up tomorrow, but I have to salvage a great buzz with tonight’s comcubine ( spirit farewell tour ).

7 TOs, 11 penalties, and we only lose by 2 scores.

    We’re pretty good.

    Good night, brothers and sisters.

  38. cd, I still think Joba can provide 14-15 wins next season.

J pointed out that Hughes joining the rotation at mid-season may be the way to go with his innings limit.

I was thinking the same as you on Sheets, an Andy in ’09-type deal would be a good deal for both sides.

MLBTR has Derek Lowe being a possible teammate of Matsui’s next season.

  39. I wished Matsui had waited for Damon to make up his mind so that if he turned them down Matsui could DH. I hate to see Matsui go and with BorASS you dont know what Damon will do….of course he could have bolted because Cashman told him no way

  40. Good Mourning Fellas. I’m in a Matsui funk for sure. After not sleeping on it, I think the rotation of Beckett, Lester and Lackey, back that up with Dice K and Buchholz and that’s no day at the beach if you go to Boston to play, but if they don’t keep the Carnival Wheel turning and make Gonzalez a Redsock or somehow lift Cabrera from Dombrowsky, the Lackey deal goes from a tremendous deal to just a good one IMO.
Also Omar needs to be taken to the woodshed and have the tar beaten out of his sorry ass. He’s responsible for this mess in Flushing, and you can send the Wilpons in for good measure.
What the hell good is getting Bay, but they may not have had a choice, can you blame Lackey and Halladay for not wanting to come to Flushing? Still not as bad with Lee shipping out of Philly, The Phillies still only have one pitcher that can win the big game. Unless that was the only way Ruben JR could get Doc I think they screwed up shipping Lee out.
    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2009/12/15/2009-12-15_harper_mets.html

Even though Anaheim got our beloved Matsui at least they didn’t land Doc or get Lackey back, their enough of a pain in the butt without tossing Halladay at the Yanks

  41. Old Danny boy is happy again.. That’s more like it. I was beginning to worry that the Red Sox’ winter haul was going to be Marco, Boof, Fabio . . . and pray for rain. hahaha
    http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2009/12/15/theyre_starting_to_make_a_connection/

  42. there goes our Holliday season hahaha Louie will be hitting the medicine cabinet soon in jubilation!
    http://bases.nbcsports.com/2009/12/report-cardinals-offer-holliday-eight-year-deal.html.php

  43. Unk – I didnt think Id have that devastated feel in December. Unreal. What a joke. I deserve better even if I can be a prick.

  44. Sal- I’m not putting this on Omar. I believe that ownership has said “No Mas” to big spending. They’ll be lucky to get 1 big name and a recovering arm.

Looks like St Louis will have to stop with the small market act if that offer is real. Between Holliday and Pujols they are going to have 2 of the biggest contracts in baseball. The Cardinals just made Boras’ job tougher concerning Damon. Holliday signs in St Louis and what is the market for Johnny? Although if the Sux trade Ellsbury in an A Gon deal and Cameron moves to center, Johnny maybe having a homecoming in Fenway in front of the monster. Even Johnny can hit the cut from left there. And Johnny leads off for them next year if it happens.

  45. How do we know that those guys didn’t want to come to Flushing when Lackey wasn’t offered anything and the Mets didn’t put a package together for Halladay. If the money is there these guys will go anywhere, especially when it means pitching in Central Park for a team with Santana in the rotation and the second highest payroll in baseball.

  46. This deal is all over the place btw. The Blue Jays get 3 prospects and pay the phillies $6 mill to defray Halladay’s cost this year? The Mariners and Phillies get
Cy Young winners? That’s the best the Jay’s could do?

    http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/article/2009-12-14/halladay-lee-reportedly-part-three-way-deal

  47. Central Park..nice one.

    Im so fucken pissed.

  48. Lev..Would you have traded Reyes, etc. for Halladay ( if that rumor is true)

  49. Cherry on top???

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald believes the Yankees have reached out to free-agent OF Jason Bay.
