Hideki Matsui is a Los Angeles Angel of Anaheim. Arigato-gozai-mashita Matsui-san!!
Roy Halladay is a Phillie. Cliff Lee is a Mariner. A bunch of scrubs-to-be-named -later are Blue Jays. John Lackey and possibly Mike Cameron are Red Sox. Matt Holliday will probably still be a Cardinal. Jason Bay is still up for grabs.

hahahaha
Walk away Omar-

Omar speaks (not well).
“Everybody wants us to improve our club. The question is: when do we improve our club? It has to make sense when you make a move. I feel like, in past years, we have always found a way to improve our club, and I feel comfortable we will continue to work hard and, when it’s all said and done, when we get to Opening Day, our team is going to be better than they way they ended last year… We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan, we know who we’ve targeted, and we feel comfortable if we get our guys we’re gonna have a very good team on the field and we’re going to be a team that will compete for our division and compete for the pennant.”
“There are still pitchers out there. We feel we that have a solid number one. And, we feel, you know, that we have some pitchers that can… a) we’re gonna need our pitchers to stay healthy, and b) pitch to their capabilities.”
Good stuff on Reyes stats Lev. He’s got some impressive numbers.
Mets Hot Stove at 10pm tonight.
Talk to you guys while eating my piss covered corn flakes in the morning.
Later.
classic, babe. you got soul up there in heaven.
I never saw this man play and honestly dont recall ever seeing a highlight reel of him. I will admit that I am out of my depths but are these HOF #s?
I was 2 the last time he played 100+ games.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/allendi01.shtml
I saw him play, J. The guy could flat out hit and he had brute strength, able to hit the ball a mile when he got a hold of one. You knew when it was gone when it left his bat.
Ran into some problems along the way cause he had a real attitude, I don’t mean it in a bad way, but it rubbed man people the wrong way, and he did not endear himself to Philly fans. When I think about it, his demeanor was similar to some of us here on BBT, kinda like “Fuck yas all.”
He was the guy that originally said about astro turf something like “If a horse can’t eat it, I ain’t playin on it.” (He loved his ponies, may have raised some).
“So I missed a curfew or 2…or 3. Theres no clock in bsaeball”–Dick Allen
Hall of Famer in my book
Thanks Nat. Costas is interviewing him on MLB now. I am sure it will run again. Seems like a good cat and aint apologizing for nothin. If ya had to compare him to somebody I have see, is there anybody?
I had a framed picture of him ( Sports Illustrated Cardinal cover ) hanging in my room.
A bad ass, huh Lou?
Allen had a phenomenal rookie season on a Phillies team that was in first place most of the season. It also happened to be the opening season for Shea Stadium that year. The Phillies went into a tailspin in the final month that rivaled the Mets finish in ’07. This was before divisional playoffs, so if you finished first, you went to the World Series, period. They were 80-51 on September 2, with a 7 and a half game lead on St. Loo. They went 12-19 the rest of the way, including an unbelievable 10 game losing streak right into the final weekend that did not end until they had finally surrendered first place for good.
Cards went on to break an 11 year old’s heart that October, them motherfuckers. It was the final post season appearance for the Mick, Whitey, Elston and the rest of the boys (a run of FIVE STRAIGHT WORLD SERIES!!!).
Why did he only stay in LA for a year? FA didnt start after the ’71 season, did it?
Allen was definitely a badass, but not the mental type like Albert Belle. He was a hardass, “don’t come around here fuckin around” type.
There was a story that, as a rookie, a big dude by the name of Frank Thomas (original ’62 Met with 34 HRs), who was a late-season pickup by the Phils to help them with the pennant run, tried to bully Allen around the batting cage since Allen was a rookie.
Allen ended up slamming his bat into Thomas’ shoulder before they were separated. That incident helped Allen get the reputation he had for the rest of his career.
But you know what? He hustled and he played his ass off in the game. I would’ve wanted him on my team anytime.
He just said he enjoyed hand cuffing an IF with a rocket more than going deep.
swung a 42oz bat.
And the Cardinals ’64 WS win ( you can’t stop McCarver, you can only hope to contain him ) opened the eyes of those who had hesitated to sign negro players.
My first year as a Cardinal fan.
Don’t feel bad Nat, 1968 broke a 9 year old’s heart.
Good shit, Nat. I always like to get the info from people that were there before I form an opinion and between what you have said and what I saw here on the TV, I gotta say he could play on my team anytime as well.
Allen’s disposition was a lot like Ted Williams’, who was slightly before my time, but gathering from what I’ve read about him.
Do you know that Ted once gave the Fenway crowd the two-armed “up yours” salute when they were loudly booing him?
I’d forgotten about that 42 oz bat of his!
That’s a serious stick to be swing around, huh? And it tells you something about his strength.
I thought the fenway faithful NEVER boo there own, let alone Teddy Ballgame
sorry, their
Gonna have to spend about an hour talking about Allen with the old man on X-Mas
I’m doing it again.

Fuckin McCarver hit a 3-run shot to beat the Yankees in one of the games.
I haven’t liked that cocksucker since.
J, even THE MICK heard hometown boos during a bad stretch!
I wouldnt youkilis on mccarver if he was on fire.
Lou, I still don’t understand how the Cardinals lost that series, and 3 games to that fat fuck Lolich.
Gibson made them look stupid striking out 17.
SEVENTEEN! IN A WORLD SERIES GAME! You know what that is? As in never happened before or since, like Larsen’s perfect game!
The passed out naked Santa is a classic.
good morning Fellas.. Yeah J good description of “don’t call me Richie” Dick Allen from Natural. Probably a cancer in the locker room with the black power stuff that was around in the 60′s. He’s one guy you wouldn’t be pussy footin around with on a contract, you’d give him the 5th year in a heart beat on talent alone, but he might upset the apple cart once you had him. A real bad ass for not a real big guy. I always thought of him as a much taller individual but he weighed in at 5’11″ around 190 similar to Sheffield in body and attitude, but a better player in my book. The mother could really hit, his power was always spoken about in the same sentence with the Mick. I saw him play at Shea during that 64 Phillie collapse as a rook, and He was a bad ass for the White sox also later on. I’d say you could count on him not coming out for God Bless America if he was in the mix now, or if he did he’d give you one of those Tommie Smith John Carlos type of fist pumps representing black power. Or maybe he’s mellowed I didn’t see the MLBTV thing
Poor Lackey or maybe not 85 million for 5 yr’s ain’t a bad days work, but his dream team the Rangers look like their ready to be bought, if this is a repeat drop sorry http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/baseball/rangers/stories/121609dnsporangersqa.38339f8.html
I was glad to see the rumor the Yanks have no interest in Bay. Now if Damon would just get it done we can move on to the pitching. I guess 13 for one year with a team option won’t fly. I guess nobody likes getting a pay cut but the 2 for 20 sounds good, maybe they’ll settle there
Natural I was at that 64 game 4 WS when Boyer hit that grand slam in the 6th, we were up 3 zip until then. Right center field bleachers we sat. We were flying from the 9th inning bomb the Mick hit the day before off Schultz, but that Boyer slam bummed us out. I still want revenge on Louie’s boys 45 years later, I should really get over it, very childish of me to carry that grudge, that was a very good Cards team In retrospect one of the teams that changed the concept of baseball socially, as documented in Halberstam’s book October 1964. Gibson was super human.
Looks like Nolan stays Sal. The guy who came in second (Crane) evidently backed out at the last minute last year on a deal to buy the Astros. Not a good way to ingratiate yourself with the old boy’s club.
I wonder what Cashman thought of Chapman’s bullpen. Sounds like he was impressive. One cat compared Chapman with Brien Taylor, the No. 1 Draft pick of the New York Yankees in 1991 who never made it to the Major Leagues. I hope this kid doesn’t have the same instincts when he’s in a bar as BT, unless he takes the Boston offer, then party on Arno

Just sickening
http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/1793/red-sox-spend-less-win-more
Spend less win more? Win more than what? They just signed Cameron so how do they measure the results at ESPN? By last year’s “WAR” for Cameron vs Bay and not next year’s win-loss?
BTW- The “jump” button gets hit every time I see Gammons on MLB Network.
Wondering when the market comes to the Mets who are not overreacting and what that market actually is.
Anyone have anything?
Any thoughts on the Taylor for Wallace swap? You say tomato, I say tamato type deal or what? Both seem like pretty good prospects.
Can Neyer/espn aka RedSox UriNation be any more fact-challenged?
“The acquisition of the 36-year-old former Gold Glover likely means the end of Bay’s short tenure in Boston, though a baseball source last night said the Sox have yet to inform him he’s no longer in their plans.”
How many days ago was it that Bay’s agent TOLD THE RED SOX he was moving on?
If the Mets really wanted Bay, wouldnt they have signed him already? Why would you wait when his former team has “moved on” and you have a week to get it done?
When I tell a client, “I’ll send ya something next week”, I know there is a 90% chance I will never do business with them.
I’d take Wallace ( Braveheart ), anyone who can win back to back triple crowns in the Pac 10 gets my vote, kev.
It came down to Toronto needing a 1B / DH type, and Oakland needing an OF.
Oh, and good morning BBTers.
All I know about Cameron in LF for the BlowSox is that I am very happy for the Yankees.
I thought it was a horrible idea on the part of the Yankees when they considered him for CF in a potential swap for Leche.
And I really shouldn’t be surprised with espn. After all, they were the same guys who raved about their home team’s ’09 rotation depth after they signed Grandpa Smoltz and “Bad” Penny.
I thought Cameron would have been decent for a year or two for Yanks if they didnt sign Damon. With the Yankees line-up being stacked, I thought a gold glove veteran in the OF wasnt the worst idea.
Having Cameron in LF doesn’t have me quaking in my boots, Nat.
Having said that, if they land Beltre, the Sox will not give away many games on defense.
Remember the Beltran/Cameron collison? Mets fell apart after that one (as did Camerons jaw). Brutal.
Igarashi played for the Swallows in Japan.
Id rather walk around with a jersey that says Mets across the chest vs. Swallows.
Looking for silver linings here. Times are tough.
Good stuff on Allen Sal, Sheffield, huh? When I heard them say that he swung a 42oz. bat I almost fell off the couch. The stuff about him writing messages in the IF dirt to the fans and the other players was terrific.
