What Can the Yankees Afford in 2010?

With all the Hot Stove talk over who would look best added to the Yankee and Met lineups and pitching staffs, let’s get down to the brass tacks over how much they may afford to spend going into 2010.  Today, let’s consider the Yankees.

The first question is: what comes off and on the books for spring 2010.

The second question is: how to deal with payroll year over year – simply, you can either grow it, shrink it, or leave it flat.

The third question is: what needs to be addressed on the roster?

The last question is: who is out there available that fits the combined profile of roster needs and budget restriction?

Before the Winter Meetings, the Yankees announced very specific plans to get lighter and tighter in 2010, the goal being to bounce out of their World Series win into a cleaner balance sheet.  The target as presented by the reporter as $186M, but assumes Cashman’s “-$15M” quote was interpreted correctly, which it may not have been – so let’s consider something first.

I believe that the $201M figure for 2009 may be a tiny bit misleading as it does not seem to take into account the $6M in performance bonuses that Andy Pettitte was awarded, by virtue of his contracted performance bonuses, for staying healthy and pitching 200+ innings through the postseason.  So, the corrected baseline for this discussion is $207M with the 2010 target (2009 minus $15M) now at $192M.  (Andy will net just $250k more for his 2010 contract versus 2009, although, this year, 100% of the money is 100% guaranteed and 100% unbound from his 2010 performance).

Let’s sum up what comes off the books, and I won’t count the minor league or league minimum contracts so this analysis isn’t THAT precise (feel free to follow along):

Johnny Damon -$13M…Hideki Matsui -$13M…Xavier Nady -$6.5M…CW Wang -$5M…Jason Giambi -$5M (yep)…Jose Molina -$2M…Brian Bruney -$1.25M…that’s a total of -$45.75M off the books.

What grows bigger on the books, as far as salary increases and new contracts?

CC Sabathia +$9M…Grand +$5.5M…Igawa +$4M (yep)…Cano +$3M…Swisher +$1.5M…Jeter +$1M…Marte +$.25M…Pettitte +$.25M (see above)…I’ll assume Mitre and Gaudin would be flat, too…so that’s a total of +$24.5M back on the books.

The net net is -$21.25M in savings so far over last year, so, Cashman appears, when I factor in the $15M in budgeted payroll reduction, to have another $6.25M left to play with for 2010.

So, the first two questions are answered.  The next two questions…I leave to you!  What do the Yanks need?  Who is available for around $6.25M?

  1. I for one will miss Lowell and Bay playing for the Red Sox. But people here are hoping that Cameron and Lackey will do even better then Lowell or Bay. I don’t know, but I think what the Red Sox did to Mike Lowell was tacky. He deserved better then that. I hope you guys are alright, Seeing the weather on t.v. isn’t good news with this snow storm. Here it’s still dry, but we will be getting the snow latter on tonight. The Cape is going to get it worse then the rest of us with up to a projected 2 feet of snow with winds gusting up to over 50 m.h. Unkulsal how’s it doing in your neck of the woods. Praying for you that things will be alright with all this snow. Praying for all of you guys. Keep warm and safe.

  2. Hey, Sal, that story you told earlier about Mantle being offered a pay cut because he didn’t repeat the Triple Crown … I heard the same thing.

He won the TC in ’56 with 52-130-.353.-.464 OBP-.705 SLA. The following year? The one that caused them to offer a pay cut? He “only” went 34-94-.365-.512-.665 that season. Basically they pitched around him that year, walking him 146 times. BTW, he only struck out 75 times that season! Nice differential.

  3. One thing that I’ve noticed since the Yankees signed Johnson? In recent photos, he looks slimmed down from his Yankee days, I remember looking more portly when he was here. That might bode well.

  4. Great Stones track Lou love that number. Safe travels to you also Ellen. Unfortunately Mike lowell has been dissed before by the Redsox, last year they just kicked him aside when the Redsox were gonna get Teixeira and youkilis said he’ll just shift to third base, but then kooler heads prevailed and Tex got paid more to work closer to home. I’m sure mike knows how the business works and he understands. mike will find a home if he’s healthy he’ll make 12 million bucks that John Henry will happily pay most of some where else, so he won’t have to eat at the St. Francis House soup kitchen in downtown Boston this holiday season. That and most of the fans in Boston appreciate what mike did for your franchise, I’m sure he finds comfort in that. Jason Bay will set up his family for life with 75 million in the bank after he signs his new deal, he won’t cry either if he never has to listen to Sweet Caroline ever again I’m sure. You enjoy your weekend also. I haven’t seen any snow yet being 100 miles north of the City, I’m not sure how the fellas living near the City are doing though

  5. All the best, lambchop. Put on your dacing shoes.

  6. Thanks Nat that’s a hell of a story ain’t it?

  7. Sal you maybe too far North to see anything yet…here on Staten Island we’re waiting for the first flakes to fall…skies are cloudy & swollen…looks primed to crack open any moment.

  8. Great shit unk, you da man.

  9. A friend sent me a picture from Point Pleasant at 9AM and they were already covered. I am surprised you havent seen anything yet Supe, that aint but about 60 miles as the crow flies from you.

  10. For you, unk, I want the dirt.

  11. wow Yeah Supe the in- laws are bracing for the big one, I’m gonna take a snow shovel with me next week, you guys will be shoveling out for a few days, hope your supplies are all in the cupboard. We’ve been hit a few times but nothing more than 9 inches at a time, it’s very cold though

  12. unk has been gettin hit with 9″ at a time…hahahah

  13. Yeah jrz I suspect by 2, 3pm we should be well under way over here.

  14. Neil Young – Powdefinger

  15. supply check sal: Blue Point Blueberry Ale? check. Sam Adams Cherry Wheat? check. Grey Goose chillin in the freezer? check. Red Bull to mix w/ the Goose? check. Bag of chips? check. Red Tube? check. I’m all set Sal!!

  16. The storm started in Florida, and now they are swamped with floods. Well, better snow then floods, and Washington D.C. had quite the snow storm. What I don’t like is the strong winds with power outages. Keep safe all you guys, from what I heard this storm is all over the Northeast.

  17. yeah lombardo is a good one supe, he was actually incorporating some latin stuff in with his regular schtick, I read that in modern drummer a while back but never found the project he was talking about. I’m sure your a Marco Minnemann fan also. I liked those joints you sent us a while back, I forget the name of the band, you said they were one of your favs you actually went to see them, sort of a very heavy speed deal, the tune you posted had some weird time shit going on, it was great, it was a one word Band name. help me out, i had never heard of them before so thanks, there was good dope in that track Clutch I think it was ?

  18. hahaha somehow i knew you would be Supe

  19. Canned beer, kind bud, sunshine and Carolina/Texas from Jerry Jones palace at 2. I am all set.

  20. Hey, unk, know these guys ?

They played at a local haunt when I was a yout, bought them cocktails all night.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jym–Nl-to

  21. This is what incredible talent sounds like.

  22. Who lives better than you, supe ?

    Mama Nature, bring it.

    Or not.

  23. Lou never heard those guys, great 80′s pop stuff, very Beatles influenced, undeniable 12 string and I think a strat in there for that short melody solo. The drummer had some weird shit on his skins, I thought for a minute they might be playing to a track in the studio for the video, but if they were lip sinking they really nailed it. For a minute it looked like he de-tuned all the skins so he could whack them, this way the rest of his mates could hear the track better, hence the wrinkles in the skins. I was playing a show in Washinton DC a few years back with Albert Lee, the guys who came on before Albert was Andy Summer’s trio, Bernie Dresel was playing drums, he of Brian Setzer fame who told me all those Christmas shows that you see on Tv from Rockefeller Center are pre taped. Fooled me I told him, he said yeah it’s too cold to stay in tune with a big band like that so they played to tracks. I saw some of that Christmas stuff this year and it sounded live to me, Setzer wasn’t on the show, and i can’t tell when hip hop groups are playing to tracks or not, but whenever you see more than one synth-keyboard on stage and some roland drum pads that’s a good tip off that they are. Maybe they abandoned that concept this year. In DC, Summers Band was a whack job jazz group, not Coltrane jazz but button pushing outside stuff, no Police tunes

  24. Lou I don’t know them personally, I have crossed paths, they did a hell of a job back in 69 playing their first shows ever though hahaha. Crosby played at Bethel Woods a few years back with his band, his kid was in it, real good singers and pickers. I think Stills stole one of my former bosses wife or girlfriend. great band, good writers and singers, just have to keep an eye on your old lady is all

  25. Thanks, unk, these guys used to play a joint called Dial Tone in Norwalk, Ct. ( phones at every table so you could call other tables ), and later Good Times.

I was knee deep in the devil’s dandruff back then, and of course knew the dudes, and when they played Tasty, the lead singer had a Mickey Mantle baseball bat with a shoulder sling, and would play along.

    Boy, was those the days.

    Thanks, brother.

    Have some.

  26. since we’re fessing up on the bataria my man vinnie, the Albert Pujols of drummers. notice how he plays inside the changes and make the hits, find the downbeat on this shit and drinks are on me. This joint Actual proof turned Jazz fusion on it’s ear back in the day, mike clark was the original drummer to track it with Herbie, but Vinny goes beyond the call here, it’s one of his more tame adventures, a real circus freak

  27. Hey unk, this guy has an ear and a half, and I’m gonna drop BBT so he can share yours.

    The dude gets it, 12xu.

  28. hahaha Jorma and Jack, dial tone didn’t know that joint, sounds like fun. Jorma still has his music farm in Ohio I hope, my buddy played drums with them a few years back, i think they go solo or duo now, Pete Spears used to play keys with them, a nice english chap. He may have come to the group later than the youtube you posted though. nice cats, jorma anyway, jack might have a few screws loose still rattling around from the White Rabbit Days, a poster boy for why you clean up

  29. yeah Lou Parsons died too young. I was more familiar with his Byrds work, never heard this one, thanks for the drop. I’m out. later bro

  30. whispers among the Yankee Org. that if Damon had taken a pay cut he may have come to camp unhappy according to MLBTR.

  31. That’s damage control I think J. If the Red Sux trade Ellsbury and move Cameron to center, I’m sure Damon would be thrilled to go back to Fenway even though they “hurt his feelings” 4 years ago.

  32. Did you see that “supposedly” Damon went to the Yankees on Thursday night and said 2/20 but they had already agreed to a deal with Johnson and couldnt go back? Dont know if that came out of Damons camp, the Yankees camp or both.

  33. I saw that post you wrote J. Probably out of Damon’s camp to make the Yankees look bad and gain sympathy for Damon’s cause.

  34. I’m not convinced the sox wont make an offer to holliday. They still have alot of that Tex money left.

  35. Watchin the ’83 ALCS. Forgot all about the catchers mitts with the orange paint on them.

  36. orange paint-ahahahahahahahahah

  37. probably pushed it out of my mind because it was as dumb as new coke.

  38. new coke and orange gloves; perfect together.

  39. If you need orange paint to see the target, I dont want you on my team.

Tito Landrum just fucked up Britt Burns’ day.
