It’s old news around here, but Javier Vazquez is again a Yankee. Some Brian Cashman audio here. Cot’s way ahead of the curve. That’s $11.5M and next year his a walk year. So much for $15M savings, eh Cash?
Sorry, I just had to Wikipedia this:
Vázquez was a 5th round draft pick of the Montreal Expos in the 1994 amateur draft. He made his Major League debut for the Expos in April 3, 1998. He started 32 games as a rookie and pitched 172 innings. By 2000, Vázquez had become the ace of the Expos pitching staff and pitched 200 innings or more for four consecutive seasons.
On December 16, 2003, the New York Yankees acquired Vázquez from the Expos in exchange for Nick Johnson, Juan Rivera and Randy Choate. He agreed to a four-year deal through the 2007 season.
Following a disappointing performance and loss to the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 American League Championship Series (whereupon entering the game in the second inning, gave up a grand slam to Johnny Damon on his first pitch), the Yankees sent Vazquez, Brad Halsey, and Dioner Navarro, to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Randy Johnson on January 11, 2005.
In 33 starts overall, he went 11-15 with a 4.42 ERA.
After pitching the 2005 season with Arizona, Vázquez formally requested a trade from the team, citing a desire to be closer to his family in Puerto Rico.
On December 20, 2005, Vazquez was traded to the Chicago White Sox for Orlando Hernández, Luis Vizcaino, and highly regarded prospect Chris Young. During the 2007 season, he compiled a 15-8 record with a 3.74 ERA (second lowest of his career).
From 1998 to the present, Vázquez has compiled a career 114-113 record with 1806 strikeouts and a 4.29 ERA in 321 games. He has struck out more batters than any other Puerto Rican pitcher in history. He was selected as an All-Star in 2004.
Vázquez agreed to play for the Puerto Rico Team in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, joining fellow Puerto Rican contemporaries Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, Bernie Williams, amongst others representing the island in a team managed by St. Louis Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo.
In the 2007 season, Vázquez exceeded the two hundred strikeouts mark. This marked the third time he had done this in his career with the other two occasions being in 2001 and 2003.[2] This season was the seventh season in his career where he had thrown at least two hundred innings.[3] The only season that he was not able to work this quantity of innings was in 2004 when Joe Torre, then manager of the New York Yankees decided to jump some turns in the team’s rotation.[4] Vazquez culminated that year with 198 thrown innings.[5] When asked about Javier’s performance during the season in an interview, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillén noted that Vazquez had been throwing well for some time but the team had not been able to capitalize on this until it was too late in the season, specifically referring to the team’s performance during the summer.[6][7]
On December 4, 2008, Vázquez was traded, along with Boone Logan, to the Atlanta Braves for minor league catcher Tyler Flowers, shortstop Brent Lillibridge, third baseman Jon Gilmore and pitcher Santos Rodriguez. [8] With the Braves in 2009, Vázquez had the most successful season of his career, going 15-10, with a 2.87 ERA and 238 strikeouts in 32 starts. He also led the majors in sacrifice hits, with 20.[9]
Javier came in 4th place in the voting for the 2009 NL Cy Young Award.
On December 22, 2009 the New York Yankees re-acquired Vázquez, this time from the Braves with LHP Boone Logan, in exchange for OF Melky Cabrera, LHP Mike Dunn and pitching prospect Arodys Vizcaino.
Meanwhile, the Mets zero in on Dickey Knuckleballs.

Do you think that Carl Crawford is watching the Yankee left field situation and realizes already that the Yankees want him next year? They may have made signing him easier by ignoring Holliday, Bay and even Damon. Carl’s the guy they want.
theo is really taking a gamble bringing lackey in for the money he did. Beckett gets to side right up next to a guy making 16+ and do his thing in a walk year. If lackey wins 14 and beckett wins 20, where do those talks start?
Very obvious that Crawford is their 1st choice and if he doesnt see that I would be very surprised. He is a perfect fit. I would love to see 2 brothers in the Yankee OF for the next 5+ years too.
I don’t think the Sux will have any trouble giving Beckett a nice bump after next year especially with Lester signed through 2013 and money coming off the books in the next 2 years.
I am sure they will pay him, I am just looking at the top 3 of the rotation costing upward of 55MM in 2011 and 2012
Starting to hear a lot about trading Wright again. I’m reminded of another guy they traded in the nineties who hadn’t put up anywhere near the numbers Wright has at the same point yet went on to have what is virtually guaranteed to be a HOF career. Keep listening to Franchubby and the Mets will deserve what they get.
Beckett actually has something to prove this year. He got a few cortisone shots in his back down the stretch this year and the herald freaks insist he was not at 100% in the 08 ALCS. The guy you want to front your rotation and you are going to pay like an ace has got to be counted on at crunch time. We know he is a great PS pitcher but if he cant take the ball at 100% what fuckin good is he?
Talkin about Kent?
Carlos Baerga and Alvaro Espinoza, I love it.
Yes, Kent.
Lackey and Lester are owed $21.6 mill in 2011 and and $23.5 mill in 2012. If you add Dice K, it’s another $10 mill for those 2 years and Beckett isn’t getting Halladay money imo. Even if he does, it comes to $53 mill for their top 4. The Yankees are paying their top 4 starters over $60 mill this year.
And the Yankees are also 40 million over the threshold.
The Sux have $40 mill coming off the books next year and Lugo’s money is enough to cover Beckett’s raise. It also leaves plenty of money to extend Martinez and Papelbon if they want to. Drew off the books the following year frees up another $14 mill. The Sux don’t have the Al, Jeter and Tex size contracts to worry about either.
The Sux have $80 mill committed in 2011. The Yankees have $145 mill in obligations.
J, If Albert had 1 more run scored in 2005, he would have 30 / 100 / 100 every year of his 9 year career.
He is an animal, Lou.
C’Mon Levi, quit shootin holes in my hopes of those assholes having a 200 million $$$ team that doesnt win it all.
ahahahahahahahahah
Either way J, they are getting up into the upper atmosphere of payrolls and it is laughable to point to the Yankees and complain if they are spending $160-180 mill themselves. It is borderline to complain when you are a top 5 payroll yet are $80 mill below the Yankees. They are going to start having fingers pointed at them now as they already have in some places that they are just as “bad” as the Yankees.
Between now and 2011 the sox have to get a 1st or 3rd baseman, will have to get or bring up another SS. A LF and RF and if they dont resign Martinez they need a C and a DH. They only have $80M committed but they need 5 or 6 everyday players.
I mean the end of 2011, sorry.
J like Lev states Jeter Al Tex and CC will always keep our payroll up there. Boston has Jose Iglesias to play ss in a few years, and if they don’t trade Westmoreland he’ll be in the outfield maybe. Nava is another gaudy numbers Farm kid, and they really believe Gonzalez will be their first baseman, and youkilis to third. I don’t know what AG will cost but he won’t reach Teix money his first extension I don’t think. They might get close to that lux tax this year but they’ll fall short of it with all the money they have to budget in the next few years. Pedroia’s money is sickly, Scutaro is making more than him in the next 2 years, and he tops out @ 11 million increasing some each year until 2015

Levi, this is from MLBTR…
“The Orioles continue to hunt for a pitcher and corner infielder. I should note that they were initially linked to Pineiro, but maybe the $9MM committed to Kevin Millwood takes them out of the mix. An Erik Bedard reunion could be a possibility.”
This kid in the 5th spot for 2MM and a bullpen of Aceves, Melancon, Robertson, Marte, Hughes, Joba and Mo just may have been unstoppable….
Athletics Re-Sign Justin Duchscherer
By Luke Adams [December 30 at 12:29pm CST]
The A’s re-signed righty Justin Duchscherer to a one-year deal today. His contract has a base salary of $2MM, with another $3.5MM in incentives for games started and innings pitched. ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick first reported the agreement on December 24th.
Duchscherer has spent nearly all of his major league career in Oakland, after the Rangers traded him to the Athletics in the spring of 2002. The 32-year-old proved dominant as both a starter and reliever, when healthy, posting a 2.82 ERA in 214 appearances for the A’s. Duchscherer missed the ’09 season due to elbow surgery and depression, as explained by Crasnick in this article.
The possibilities that you could throw out of the pen in the 7th-9th innings is pretty sick.
