Minaya Downplays Beltran Surgery Bru-Ha

Hey, stop the egging, we’re all family here:

“We have a good relationship,” Minaya told the Daily News. “I wanted to see how he was doing, and he’s coming along very well. We’re excited he’s feeling good and looking forward to him coming back as our center fielder. The relationship between Carlos and the Mets, the organization, ownership, is good.”

Asked if either side had to offer an apology for a drama that started on Wednesday, Minaya replied: “There’s no apology. The issue is more the process. Nobody needed to apologize.”

“I did not say not to have surgery,” Minaya said. “What I said to him was, ‘I’m happy to hear there’s a plan in place, but we have to go through the protocol.’

“…He said the plan was to be operated on (Wednesday). At that point in time, I had not heard from my doctors on whether we had agreed to it or not. I didn’t tell him not to do it. I said as long as the protocol is met, that type of stuff.”

They have sent a letter to Scott Boras, Beltran’s agent, expressing their dismay in order to reserve any legal rights they may have regarding Beltran’s contract. Minaya would not talk about any potential action, but did say the Mets haven’t done anything beyond sending the letter.

“This is not an issue between Carlos Beltran and the Mets,” Minaya said, seeming to indicate the fault was Boras’. Boras, who has denied he’s at fault, told the Daily News on Thursday that he has cooperated with the Mets the whole way. Minaya said he had not spoken to Boras Friday.

You know, you finally get organized with your Kinko boilerplate permission forms in multiple colors, you make a flowchart and copy everyone up and down the chain, oh yes they knew, and after all that effort, along comes Scott Boras and he forgets to fax a signature and gums up the whole gosh darn process.  And then the press makes it into a federal case.  Can we just let the man do his job, for the sake of Peter?

    By the way, Strawberry was born in March 12th of 1962, just 30 days before The New York Mets played their first game ever in franchise history against The Cardinals on April 11th, 1962.

  13. Im glad Joel Piniero isnt a Met. Never liked the idea. To me, he has had three good seasons (02,03,09), is kinda small, will likely have an ERA closer to 5 than 3.

    I also hated saying his name. Sounds dumb but just being honest. Dont like his first name or his last.

  14. If Mets think Byrnes could add a spark and push Pagan to play better early while Beltran is out, why not? Would be as cheap as the Sheffield signing last year. Little to no risk in that move.

    Pineiro admitted that he finally heeded Duncan’s advice and started to feature his sinker.

    Regretted that it took him so long.

    I also read where the Mets offered 2 yrs. / $15 million, thus losing out for a million bucks.

    Either way, 29 BBs in over 200 innings is impressive, and he led the league in GB ratio.

    Joe-el oiniero with the squigly above one of the letters makes my list.

    Time will tell if he’s worth 8 mil per. My guess is he wont be worth it and will have an ERA of 5.

    He picked a good team though. I wouldnt mind playing for Sciossa. Good choice on his part.

  20. You might be right, k, but considering the season he had last year ( September not withstanding ), to get him for less money than 2009 is pretty good.

  22. At first blush eight million clams per for a guy who is 8 games over .500 for his career, has given up 85 more hits than IP for his career, & a 1.43 career WHIP seems a bit bloated. Plus he’s moving from AAAA to the hitter’s league. Will be interesting to see how guys like JP & Javy V pan out: AL to NL back to AL guys (in JV;’s case NL to AL back to NL back to AL).

  23. Actually, JP mentioned that his pitching coaches had been trying for 9 years to get him to throw the sinker.

    I think he can throw 200 innings, his pitch count dropped when he threw so many grounders and stopped walking people.

    As for Duncan, he and TLR go year to year.

    Just came from reading the day’s musings over at BH, good stuff concerning payroll.
