Minaya Downplays Beltran Surgery Bru-Ha

Hey, stop the egging, we’re all family here:

“We have a good relationship,” Minaya told the Daily News. “I wanted to see how he was doing, and he’s coming along very well. We’re excited he’s feeling good and looking forward to him coming back as our center fielder. The relationship between Carlos and the Mets, the organization, ownership, is good.”

Asked if either side had to offer an apology for a drama that started on Wednesday, Minaya replied: “There’s no apology. The issue is more the process. Nobody needed to apologize.”

“I did not say not to have surgery,” Minaya said. “What I said to him was, ‘I’m happy to hear there’s a plan in place, but we have to go through the protocol.’

“…He said the plan was to be operated on (Wednesday). At that point in time, I had not heard from my doctors on whether we had agreed to it or not. I didn’t tell him not to do it. I said as long as the protocol is met, that type of stuff.”

They have sent a letter to Scott Boras, Beltran’s agent, expressing their dismay in order to reserve any legal rights they may have regarding Beltran’s contract. Minaya would not talk about any potential action, but did say the Mets haven’t done anything beyond sending the letter.

“This is not an issue between Carlos Beltran and the Mets,” Minaya said, seeming to indicate the fault was Boras’. Boras, who has denied he’s at fault, told the Daily News on Thursday that he has cooperated with the Mets the whole way. Minaya said he had not spoken to Boras Friday.

You know, you finally get organized with your Kinko boilerplate permission forms in multiple colors, you make a flowchart and copy everyone up and down the chain, oh yes they knew, and after all that effort, along comes Scott Boras and he forgets to fax a signature and gums up the whole gosh darn process.  And then the press makes it into a federal case.  Can we just let the man do his job, for the sake of Peter?

Glorious.

  1. Scout on Mets young arm they are high on;

“Durability seems to be the biggest issue with Mejia. You obviously give a player of his talent every opportunity to stick in the rotation, but I believe he will wind up a closer long term based on conversations I’ve had with people who have some ties to the Mets organization.”

  2. Buzz: Mets prefer Joel Pineiro to Ben Sheets

  3. buzzer

  4. set the odds that Sheets makes 30 starts this year.

  5. All bullshit aside I cant give him better than 50/50

  6. from metsblog ( matt cerrone was on that radio gig LB did last season from foleys);

In talking with a few people around baseball, it sounds to me like Bengie Molina always wanted to return to the Giants, or are at least he wanted play with a team on the West Coast. Also, as the off season moved on, Molina became more and more skeptical of playing in New York

Frankly, in talking to people connected to the Mets, though they are slightly disappointed, they were never going to increase their initial offer to Molina, feeling it was not worth guaranteeing that type of money and time to a 35–year-old catcher.

In moving forward, I would not be surprised to see Henry Blanco get the bulk of playing time next season, with Omir Santos, Josh Thole and Chris Coste acting as his back-up. The team believes Blanco is one of the best defensive catchers in baseball, as do others, and he too has a strong reputation for working well with a pitching staff.

So, good for the Mets for holding their ground; and, good for us, Mets fans, the majority of which did not seem to want Molina in the first place.

  7. I gotta be honest and could probably papertrail that I think Sheets is a wuss.

I dont like him but feeling desperate for another arm and fags like Sheets are looking better than in the past.

Gotta go pick up the wife. Later J.

  8. That’s good then it wasn’t a bummer losing BM. Not that fond of Sheets’s manhood, hahahahaha.. he’ d look good in Citi, maybe they can convince him it’s a hitter’s park and run that routine on him, he might give you a break on that 10 million, if that’s the hold up.

  9. Santana and Sheets would be the best 1-2 punch in the division, IF….

  10. Cerrone has a little corner at Citi Field- He’s a Met mouthpiece.

Blanco is 38 years old and started 58 games behind the plate last year, 28 games in 2008 and 13 games in 2007. He has never started 100 games in his career and is a .228 lifetime hitter. Bulk of the time? Cerrone has to stop.

  11. The problem is that Atlanta has a 1,2,3,4 punch

  12. Roy Williams better start stuffing these beanpole freshamn hes got full of good ole Carolina Bar-B-Que. Hes equal opportunity too, he got skinny white boys just like hes got skinny brothers.

  13. Baby steps, Lev, baby steps.

  14. Sal was talking about alot of 2009 Yankees sprinkled around the leagues. Hes right, just off theplayoff roster its quite a few…

    Damon
    Matsui
    Melky
    Coke
    Hairston
Hinske made at least 1 of the PS rosters
    Bruney , see Hinske

  15. Molina

  16. That’s a lot of turnover.

  17. a sheets article on that page also

  18. Boras really overplayed a decent but not great hand with johnny. If all of us saw it, why didn’t Scott and Damon?

  19. ChucklesDgaf over there at TDN just brought up a Castillo for Byrnes swap. I think since the D-Backs released him they have ten days to trade him. If that is in fact the case I think Chuckles is on to something. The D-Backs were just gonna let him walk and eat the money this way they get a ML 2nd baseman in return and the same money is broken up over 2 years giving them 6M in flex now.

That also allows the mets to sign Hudson and put Byrnes in CF til Beltran comes back.

  20. I’m down on Hudson after the way his season ended. They’d find a way to botch that up by trading Castillo and not being able to sign Hudson.

Why doesn’t Hudson have much interest again?

  21. Maybe he is on that list with Abreu and Damon.

  22. I was a big fan and wanted them to get him last year but after May, he did not have a good year and lost his job to Belliard in September. Something isn’t right there J.

  23. sounds good J, byrnes can probably stay healthy for 1/2 a year. the mets have to pay him the 12 million? Do the mets want to get rid of Castillo that bad? byrnes is a 12 million dollar risk ?

  24. There are 3 very good ballplayers that are not receiving the type of interest they should on the open market. These owners are driving the salaries down after years of paying thru the beak for steroid inflated numbers.

  25. Yeah Castillo dropped the pop up, is a singles hitter and has declined at second in general but he worked his a$$ off last year, hit .302 and had a .387 obp. He can still be productive in front of Wright and behind Reyes.

  26. And I have been hearing all day how important obp is especially from your catcher unless his name is Henry Blanco.

  27. Byrnes plays CF til Beltran comes back then he becomes the 4th OF. He will be a very expensive 4th but if they want to get rid of Castillo bad enough thats a way out. Then Byrnes deal is up at the end of the year and they dont have Castill to deal with again next year the way they have the last 2.

  28. I like Eric Byrnes but he has had a lot of injuries in the last 5 years and I don’t know how much better he is as a fourth OF and caretaker for Beltran than Pagan.

  29. Good point on Pagan. The only question is are you a better team, until Beltran comes back, with Byrnes in CF and Hudson at 2nd or with Pagan in CF and Castillo at 2nd?

  30. abreu did pretty good this year. hudson is a mystery for sure. damon sounds like he would work for 2 million.I’m starting to think GM’s thought damon was a product of yankee stadium and the line-up, and NY is his only true fit ? that and his arm.

  31. Van Gundy just said, “MacFarland has had his hands on so many balls tonight, at some point he is gonna have to go to 2 hands to secure the rebound”

  32. I hope Damon is a product of the lineup and Johnson goes .295/16/80 .425OBP at of the 2 hole if its that easy to hit in that spot.

  33. .283 .357 .417 hudson in 09, 631 PA’s, 140 something games

  34. It dont make sense that somebody cant use this guy Sal.

  35. not a bad spot to hit in, he’s being protected by 75 million bucks in front and behind, what’s the WAR on that?

  36. I’m pretty sure of what I get with Castillo and Pagan, although he has had his own injury issues and Byrnes and Hudson are question marks just as big or bigger. I guess I’m in the “devil you know” camp. Pagan and Castillo were 2 of the only highlights from last year (yes, even with the dropped pop up).

Damon scored 400 runs in 4 years with them and drove in 300. Johnson isn’t doing that.

  37. WAR….ahhahahahahahaha

  38. still might get damon back in that hole

  39. Good #s on JD. Good thing Johnson only has to give them 90+R and 75+RBI THIS year.

  40. Sal, I seriously dont know if I can take more than 25-30 games of him in LF and I am beginning to think Cashman feels the same way.

  41. I think Boras believed that Holliday would draw more interwest, and that he could sell Damon’s services to one of the losers.

I think the Cameron signing threw a wrench in the works, and Boras thought the Sox and Yanks would show more interest in Sunny D.

Of course the Granderson trade furthur muddied the water.

Don’t know how much Byrnes has left, j, but he says he’s healthy now.

  42. I hear ya on the devil ya know , Levi. I just know I have heard mets fans clammoring for Luis’ ouster for over a year now and that seemed like a moderately reasonable solution.

  43. I think Byrnes might have a good year left in him, Lou.

  44. If Johnson gets on base 42.6% of the time, like he did this past year, hitting in front of T&A how many runs is he gonna score?

  45. Could be right, j, the question is are the Mets willing to swap the 2 and sign Hudson ?

It does make sense for Byrnes in CF, but I would rather sign Felipe Lopez for 2b.

He had a solid year in 2009, and would be cheaper.

He’s a switch hitter with some pop, although his defense is just passable.

There’s talk that the Cardinals showed some interest, they need a LH stick for the bench and he plays IF and OF.

  46. I will bet that if Johnson gets 500 PAs in the 2 hole that he will score 30-35X on HRs by Tex and Big Al alone.

  47. Has Johnson ever had 500 PAs in a season ?

  48. I don’t want Nick Johnson running the bases too often.

  49. Another good point
