Happy Birthday, Major League Baseball; William Hulbert, In Memorium

You won’t find his name on MLB.com in a blustery article, and you won’t find today’s date mentioned in any major baseball article today.  Bud Selig won’t designate a day to honor his memory.  He was overlooked for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame until an act of the veteran’s committee in 1995 recognized him, ignored by Cooperstown for 113 years even though he was born two miles away in Burlington Flats, NY.  “Major League Baseball” would not exist in its current form without his contribution.  On February 2nd, 1876, in New York City, William Hulbert, of what would become the Chicago Cubs, called together the principle owners of the seminal baseball clubs in order to form what would become the National League.

Hulbert established the central authority of the league to enforce schedules, hire umpires, ensure compliance both by the owners and by the players (who, until then, habitually “jumped” contracts), and promote the integrity of the sport in the practice of the clubs and in the eyes of the buying public.  One of his early steps was to banish clubs from the two most popular baseball towns – Philadelphia and New York City – for not submitting their schedules in a timely matter.  There was to be no drinking, no gambling, and no games on Sunday.  Players would be bound to team for their entire careers, a novel concept surprisingly accepted broadly by fan, owner, and player alike, as it lent a continuity to the game never before realized.  Four men on the Louisville squad were banned for life after it was revealed they tried to throw the 1877 championship series.

The man who saved baseball” “ruled with an iron fist“, was a “pitiless coal baron” and a “pirater of players“, and is buried beneath a baseball.  No, really.

By far the best chain of events to be found lays out the progression of reserve clauses and contracts and unions and minors, and is a great read to put the current chaos of baseball in its proper perspective.

Please enjoy, and remember, the way things are are because someone made them that way.

  1. Good call, Salvatore, my guess is if he is up to snuff, they start talking at the all star break.

  2. really, that writer said Verlander isn’t an ace either. That kid is some pitcher. There not sure JB is healthy, is my guess, he didn’t finish strong.

  3. can’t see JB in pinstripes. Then again I never envisioned Johnny Damon in pinstripes after he popped those 2 cookies from JV into the right field stands in the 04 ALCS so I guess anything’s possible right?

  4. Joba & Hughes coming along could very critical to the gameplan. Although Becky would want a multiyear deal.

  5. I love Verlander Sal…there’s not a starting hulrer…outside of Lincecum…that I’d take on my team before him that’s for sure.

  6. Yeah that’s what I was afraid of Lou, they might want to tie the knot mid season then honey moon the second half of the season. This Beckett thing also ties into Gonzalez. I don’t think Hoyer wants any player on the arb clock, and unless buchholz is lights out he won’t want him I don’t think. If buchholz is lights out Boston won’t want to give him up.

  7. If not the Yanks, somebody will pay Beckett to be their ace, which he MOST CERTAINLY is.

  8. ditto on verlander supe

  9. If Beckett walks and Boston doesn’t bring in another ace, the balance of power is VERY FIRMLY tipped towards the Bombers.

  10. yeah Lib Beckett will get paid, I hope it’s not Boston, that guy scares me ever since 03.

  11. They’ll make a run @ Lee ?

  12. Beckett has proven his meddle time & again for Boston in the spot that ultimately counts: postseason. Although he hasn’t faired too well in post season recently: 27 hits in 20.30 IP w/ 18 ER in his last 4 playoff starts w/ the RS.

  13. Run @ Lee? That’s another big jump across the stream in 2011, the next big news clip we hear might be that AG signed an extension and him and Moorad are best pals again. Lee, Beckett, AG, Victor…

  14. This is long ago, past history scuttlebutt, and may no longer be true, but the word I heard about Beckett when he was a young’un with the Marlins is that he wasn’t very fond of fitness and workout routines, preferring to rely totally on his raw ability.

That says nothing about his talent and competitiveness, which has always been annoyingly effective. But if it was true then, and still is (?), it can make a Henry or Theo at least wonder.

  15. If AG signs a pricey extension, which might be digesting right now as indicated by the Moorad quote hiccup, maybe we’ll see the Sox start moving on Beckett because they would have some certainty on the numbers.

  16. You know what? Gun to my head, I don’t think Beckett and the Sox have a happy future together.

  17. Just heard on the news that Washington DC is going to get over 30 inches of snow. Strong winds up to 45 m.p.h. and power outages to boot. Hope you guys are going to be alright, Boston and north of Boston is not going to get any snow out of this. I’ll be praying for all of you to stay warm and safe, so be careful driving around, will you.

  18. Thx E I live on Staten Island…I’m gonna go home tonight down a bottle of Knob Creek & do fishtails on the roads in the snow in my rear wheel drive car…just kidding.

  19. take the movie camera with ya, supe. content is king!

  20. sinnersswing, be careful driving. I am more worried about black ice then anything else. I just can’t figure out why here I am up in Lowell Ma, and Virginia has had more snow then this winter then all of Northern New England.

  21. Good question E…personally I blame it on global warning & deezy21 from the Boston Herald.

  22. Good one, S.

  23. you have a good weekend Ellen…pitchers & cacthers are just around the corner.

  24. fishtails-ahahahahahahahahahahaha

Beckett is 65-34 in 4 years there. They gave Lackey the dough and he is going to get his.

  25. Beckett already making $12 mill per. What’s another 5-7 mill with the money coming off the books. If Adrian becomes available they can afford him and probably wind up saying goodbye to V Mart.

  26. Pick any two, I suppose. But if they let loose V Mart, that lineup sucks. If they let loose Beckett, they better have a big time starter up their sleeve. Or, they keep Beckett and Victor and they lose to the Yanks again.

  27. Pardon, didn’t see your “if they get AG” Lev. I wonder if AG has to empty out his text messages on his phone every hour. I bet they extend him before March.

  28. Beckett’s a done deal.

  29. Numbers aside, how do you all rate VMart versus AG as far as keying the order in the three hole?

  30. yd.

  31. Maybe, but will it be a happy future?

  32. AG is a great stick and a great glove, VMart is a very good stick and an average glove.

AG is a big piece for whomever gets him.

  33. WHAT A LONG THREAD !!!!!!!!!!

  38. Agreed on Beckett and AG Lou.

AG is the power bat they need after losing Bay with Ortiz on the way out. VMart is a line drive hitter who hits HR but doesn’t really have a position.

(The Mets could use him though. On second thought, there aren’t many teams that couldn’t use his bat in the middle of the lineup)

  39. This was posted by this guy that has become an old friends lapdog….

Baseball must be a joke in other cities like Florida, where their team has twice won the WS and then gets dis-banded because of the cost to keep the players. The biggest disgrace is San Deigo having to lose a home grown, home town player like Adrian Gonzalez. The system is terrible but it’s here to stay

  40. You’re a regular spam filter evader, shoeless! Why aren’t in the miami stadium parking lot with the helmet cam satellite uplink? Everybody pulls their weight!!

  41. How much snow did you get up in that neck of the woods??

  42. Hey, Bambino, I scrolled down on the Irvin link, and saw this. Guaranteed to get Shoe going on the Friday/Saturday before the contest …

Louisiana H.S. student sent home for Colts jersey
Posted by Evan Silva on February 5, 2010 9:31 PM ET

A Louisiana high school student was sent home Friday for wearing a Colts jersey to class a day after the principal encouraged the student body to wear New Orleans Saints’ black and gold.

“If they tell other students to support their team, why can’t I support mine?” said Brandon Frost, 17.

Frost, a senior at Maurepas High School, moved from Indianapolis three years ago.

  43. no snow!

  44. I saw that Nat.I was thinking if that was Joe he would have burned the skool down

  45. For Johnny Damon:

  46. Let me be the first to wish The Babe Happy 115th and Me #48

  47. morning fellas
I guess Detroit only wants to win one year, that’s all they want to give Damon. Boras will have this guy on the WWE circuit if he’s not careful, although Boras has teams aplenty to choose from. Just plug in Johnny, and win a ring, it’s that simple
