Spring Training Quotables – Mark Teixeira

The New York Yankees’ Mark Teixeira on repeating …[bracketed] quotes were removed by MLB.com but retained hereunder for accuracy:

“Because we’re the [gosh darn] Yankees,” Teixeira said. “If you get complacent, it’s going to be a tough year for you. Once you taste a championship and taste that victory, [gahhhhleeee] it just makes you want it even more. You realize it’s everything you’ve ever hoped for.”

“We have to feel that way every single [fudgin'] season,” Teixeira said. “We feel like we’re just as capable of defending our [dang-gum] championship as we were winning it last year. We have a great team, the core group of guys are back [and a bunch of black guys are here, too!], and hopefully we all get a little bit better [I mean those boys fly!].”

“[Shoot,] I don’t know how many times I told my wife how nice it is I don’t have to worry about the future [while she's ironin' my jersey and sweepin' the porch],” Teixeira said. “The last couple of years, it’s always been, ‘Where’s my family going to be? Where are we going to live? [Where'd ya put my dang-gum fishing pole, Mama?]‘

“This year, it was really, ‘What [funny-soundin'] restaurant are we going to go to? Where are we going to take the kids [where't don't smell like pee]? What shows are we going to watch?’ I think that was a nice change for my family [I mean, how much catfishin' will an 8-year-old take before he grows himself a set a' gills?]”

“Everyone kind of tries to tell you … ‘You have to change something, [quit starin' at the sun!  poop sittin' down!], but be yourself,’” Teixeira said. “Whoever it is, they’re in this room for a reason [even that Robbie Cano, I suppose]. You have talent, they’ve performed on the highest levels. When you come to the Yankees, there’s more eyes watching [kinda like gettin' lost in the swampy place where the hill people are, blinkin' in the trees, don't go there!], more people that care — which is great. You go out and play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

“For us, I think it’s ‘Let’s keep doing what we’re doing,’” Teixeira said. “That was our motto last year during the playoffs — ‘Keep up the good work and let’s keep working hard and playing good baseball.’ [My other motto was "an apple a day keeps the doctor away, Alex!"]  That’s what we’re going to try to do this year.”

  1. sri lankan…hahahahahahhahahahahaha….and YES, I knew.

  2. Lib making a foray into FanLaughs was bold of him. I’m surprised he got 1 guy to come in so quickly. The other guy from Chicago might be entertaining enough to have on board too. I meant to ask that fly what he thought of his Giants this year. I was all over Cain last spring for not being the guy everyone was waiting for him to be but between Lincecum and Cain, the Giants have a nice 1-2 combo. Last year we liked their pitching too but asked where they were going to get their runs. Hahahahahahaha. Silly you. Runs are not important. Didn’t you get the memo?

  3. hahahahahahahahhahaha…. Can ya just picture all these number crunchers in the mirror, shaving in the morning repeating, “runs dont matter” over and over before they start their day?

  4. runs don’t matter-ahahahahahahahahahahahhah

Mind boggling that they say this sh!t like you are an idiot for not seeing the “genius” in their work.

  5. and YES, very bold on the webmaster, life creators part. He gets nothing but props for me for heading into the belly of the beast.

I love that McFly called my “formula” whatever he did(I aint gonna look for the exact word, oh yeah, it was mangled!) for adding runs scored to RBIs and subtracting HRs to come up with the # of “runs created” for a particular player.

  6. My favorite line of the day was “It isn’t fair”(for getting an rbi)-ahahaha ahahahahaha ahahahahahha.

  7. Its a very complex game and at the same time it is VERY SIMPLE, and thats what the # crunchers dont see.

  8. I love the fact that you asked him what the most important formulas were and I’m surprised he didn’t say, “Whatever Billy Beane and Theo like today.”

You know how much I hate the Beane Worship. Listen, he is a good GM with limited resources but he still hasn’t won anything. He was fortunate to have Zito, Mulder and Hudson at the same time along with Giambi, Tejada and Chavez who all made huge contributions at young ages. I don’t think he was the GM when any of those guys came into the organization. I believe he was Alderson’s assistant GM. They have won 75 games the last three years. I’m sorry but you have got to keep 1 pitcher that has come through there-Zito, Hudson, Mulder, Haren, Harden. He has kept 1 guy of all of them and that was Chavez. How did that work out?

  9. “isnt fair”…God Almighty, the fuckin guy went up there and the only thing he cares about is getting that run in and he couldnt give 2 sri lankan hits for the BBT about how he accomplishes it.

These fuckers that come up with this bullshit have never played an inning or a minute of organized sports and it makes me sick to my stomach.

  10. absolutely right. You have to find a way to keep 2 of those pitchers and turn the other 3 into 2 cant miss position players and a stud pitching prospect….at LEAST, regardless of how much money you have.

  11. Right? You stand in the box thinking, “Whatever I do… GET that effin run in!” and these guys say, “What about the guy that walked to lead off the inning?” Think about it.

I was just going to say that I can’t wait for Bill James to get the Manager’s job in Boston. “Tito, you’re out. Let Bill James show you how it’s done.”

  12. “the guy that walked to lead off”….That had smoke coming out of my ears. I think he actually said, “thats what STARTED the RALLY”….It was ONE RUN. Since when is that a fuckin rally?

  13. Its like saying that “Freddie” opened at + .03 cents and finished even but the Dow finished up $7 but poor freddie got no credit.

  14. BTW- No one has lasted longer there than Francona since Cronin split in 1947.
He’s done alright for himself. He plays the game pretty good up there.

A walk to lead off the inning is all well and good but let’s not nominate the guy for sainthood especially with the amount of walks that get issued from the pitchers giving us all of these quality starts.

  15. sorry, nasdaq

  16. francona will have his # retired there someday.

  17. He probably should. He isn’t as stupid as he looks and tries to act.

  18. he does look stoooopid stuffing all that gum in his face but I cant argue with the results.

  19. Not probably should. He will. They went 86 years without a title and he won 2 in 4 years even if they are in denial about Manny and Ortiz. It was JD Drew’s obp that got it done for them in ’07 and Schilling’s sock in ’04.. Manny and Ortiz having 270 rbi combined had nothing to do with them winning. RBI are meaningless.

  20. “It was JD Drew’s obp that got it done for them in ‘07 and Schilling’s sock in ‘04.. Manny and Ortiz having 270 rbi combined had nothing to do with them winning. RBI are meaningless”…….Thats as succint as it gets.

  21. Bro, I just wanna say, if I havent before, that I thoroughly enjoy talking baseball with you.

  22. Likewise J.

We’re the dinosaurs . You put it right before- Complex yet very simple. These guys are trying to reinvent the wheel or in some cases, just trying to JUSTIFY THEIR EXISTENCE!

I don’t need BABIP to tell me what a guy does on balls hit in play. David Wright led MLB in it last year and struck out 140 times. He had his worst season in 5. I must have mentioned 3 times how crazy it was what he was hitting on balls in play and didn’t even realize that these idiots had a stat for it.

  23. I remember you saying that it was crazy(re: his BABIP) back in like June.

  24. We’ve had 4 big storms here this year but I haven’t seen a storm like this in about 15 years. The kids had today and already have tomorrow off. It’s crazy. We had the power go on and off 2 or 3 times already and that never happens.

The funny thing about BABIP is that you don’t get penalized for k’s as if they are throwaways. They are the biggest waste of an at bat and BABIP rewards a high strikeout guy. I brought it up as a curiosity that a guy who looked so bad 80 times (I think that was the number at the time) was hitting over .400 on balls he put in play. I honestly and ignorantly didn’t know they had a stat for it but that is what I mean about context. I honestly believe that a good GM and Manager can use these stats to benefit their clubs but these things have become so 2 dimensional that they have almost become useless.

  25. sorry Bro, too drunk to continue. Get at ya tommorrow.

  26. Hey everyone, how you doing? Just looking in to days threads, seems like a usual crazy day. Who was this guy Fly who came on? Sounded to me like a gentleman who wants to make base ball just a study in math, seems to me A man of 65 who did not graduate high school, that bring in runs no matter how, with a home run, a walk, a stolen base ,the object is to score runs for your team and keep the other team from scoring runs. I understand this killer whale that killed that young lady trainer has attacked trainers before and they found a dead man in his tank in the early 90′s.

  27. See ya J.

1Yank- Lib was making inroads over at FanGraphs and the Fly came over from there. I can’t say that I disagree with you that they are trying to turn this game into a math exercise and couldn’t agree more that scoring runs is the name of the game.

Shamu isn’t the lovable and cuddly mammal that they would have you believe he was.

  28. It is just a shame that all them kids had to see that trainer killed. this has got to be very dramatic for them kids.

  29. They found a dead man in the tank? You mean the Killer got out and killed someone and dragged him back for safe keeping?!
