Babe Ruth

Sixty-two years ago today, the great Babe Ruth passed on. His spirit lives on by the remembrance of BR2, who requested a posted picture of his resting place in the Gates of Heaven.

Also, I was googling around and found a poem from about the time of his passing that eulogized the great Yankee slugger:

Game Called. Across the field of play
the dusk has come, the hour is late.
The fight is done and lost or won,
the player files out through the gate.
The tumult dies, the cheer is hushed,
the stands are bare, the park is still.
But through the night there shines the light,
home beyond the silent hill.

Game Called. Where in the golden light
the bugle rolled the reveille.
The shadows creep where night falls deep,
and taps has called the end of play.
The game is done, the score is in,
the final cheer and jeer have passed.
But in the night, beyond the fight,
the player finds his rest at last.

Game Called. Upon the field of life
the darkness gathers far and wide,
the dream is done, the score is spun
that stands forever in the guide.
Nor victory, nor yet defeat
is chalked against the players name.
But down the roll, the final scroll,
shows only how he played the game.

  1. I’m just thinking what’s best for society. And it has become abundantly clear that it’s best for all parties that A.J. Burnett’s life be ended. I don’t have a problem with him getting the electric chair, or being hanged by a noose. I’ll leave that up to the executioner. But he DEFINITELY needs to die.

  3. I dont care where you put him a .300 hitter is a .300 hitter just like a .247 is a .247 no matter where you play him.

1Yank/Shoe – all you ever hear about AJ is how good his stuff is, In reality he is nothing more than a career .500 pitcher. The only good year he had was his walk year and one wonders if like a lot of other guys his walk year wasn’t PED assisted

  4. C-HAB:

I am sick and tired of bleeding hearts that insist that A.J. Burnett be allowed to live. Fuck them. If Burnett pitched for THEIR team, they would want him to die. It’s easy to want to save someone’s life if you aren’t a Yankee fan, and watching him throw gopher balls up there for the opponent. PLUS, Burnett stole a SNICKERS bad when he was 16 years-old. I have no idea why he is still alive.

  5. Shoe trust me I am not a bleeding heart – how about we cut the fucker and eat the 53mil we owe him…..at least then it will just cost us money not games

  6. C-HAB:

You see, that’s the kind of bleeding heart nonsense that I’m talking about. You want to simply cut Burnett from the team, and pay him $53 Million ?????????

A.J. Burnett is a BAD PERSON, C-Hab. He needs to be EXECUTED. Also, it’s in Burnett’s contract that should he be executed by the state during his Yankee tenure, his bitchy widow WILL NOT collect ANY money from The Yankees on his contract. Give him the juice, and save the money.

  7. Shoe…whatever you want to go with AJ, include Gardiner and Cervelli

  8. Ok Shoe if you insist KILL AJ but you must add Cashman for being the idiot that signed him….Cervelli and Gardiner – just break their legs and threaten them to AAA

  9. OK, then …………..

3 executions (Burnett, Gardiner, and Cervelli), and use the money that was owed to them on their contracts to buy free Gatorade for all the fans at Yankee Stadium on September 7th vs. the Orioles. I’m just trying to be practical here. Temper justice with mercy.

  10. That’s not true. He bats on top of the Yankee lineup and the Rays and Sox will scout him up and down. In fact I think those teams already have his number, on the previous expectation of him being a Yankee. He hits about a buck-sixty in 51 PAs so far this year. But he’ll hit .300 for the Tigers, a sub-.500 team, and knock in a 20-odd runs to boot.

Meanwhile YES just showed JD Drew ranging an awful long hard way towards catching a pop in foul territory with Carlos Pena on third, he must have forgotten how many outs there were because Pena tagged easily to tie the game.

  13. Yeah Lib but you are forgetting we have “super genius” Kevin Schlong who I am sure would have him hitting .300+ at any position

  17. Pass completed to JUAN PIERRE over the middle !!! He’s got one man to beat, and that’s The Yankees’ strong safety MARIANO RIVERA !!!

    ColtsOriolesBullet August 28, 2010 at 10:32 pm
  18. You score 12 runs in a ball game and you should be thinking what an EASY victory – instead nothing is easy with this team

  19. CC was not at his best tonight, but he went 7 innings and Yankee offense showed up to get him his 18tn win.

  20. Excellent open-field tackle by Mariano Rivera. That was close. He almost broke it for the TD.

  21. MJB investigating New York Yankees teammates in the minors Ivan Nova ( pitcher ) and Wilkin De La Rosa ( pitcher ) for giving each other B-12 shots, which is not on the ban substance list. They want to be sure it is only B-12 ,but don;t go after Big Papi for his roid use. Tell me MLB don’t have it out for the Yankees?

  22. Final Score:

    —————————–

    ORIOLES – 5

    ANGELS – 0

Buck Showalter did more in turning The Yankee franchise from losers to winners than JOE TORRE did.

  23. Top of the morning, sports fans.

A beautiful pre- Autumn day here in central Pa., and I’m off to the Grange Fair in Centre Hall.

For those of a curious nature, a Grange Fair is a festival in which several thousand transients ( 25,000 in this particular case ) descend on a locale to enjoy various exhibits and food offerings. Myself, I’m heading for the unwed teenage Mom booth with a sack full of funnel cakes and a pint of Old Forrester. How could I possibly fail ?

Anywho, this event is the last of it’s kind in the U.S., and I can’t pass up the opportunity to to flirt with Carny folk while scouting the rows of Port O Potties for the future Mrs. Spirit.

Enjoy your day, and I leave you with a little morning music.

  41. The Orioles Claim Their FIRST WINNING AUGUST SINCE 1997 !!!!!!!!

    ——————————————————————————————

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Pop the champagne corks and blow the party horns. The Orioles have recorded a winning August.

It took 13 years, a period in which seven Orioles managers have picked up an August defeat, but the club can finally put to rest one of the more embarrassing examples of its recent futility.

With their 5-0 victory Saturday night over the Los Angeles Angels, the Orioles (47-83) improved to 15-11 this month with two games to play, clinching their first winning August since 1997, when Davey Johnson led the Orioles to an 18-10 mark and the organization’s last playoff berth.
