Names Not Yet Etched in Stone

New York City has stadium fever, and I’m not immune. I wandered out with my camera on a Saturday afternoon vision quest and, as always, the City did not let me down.
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is a monumental structure cropped upon a high point overlooking the northwest corner of Central Park, on 112th St. Work began in 1892 (when the Boston Beaneaters took the NL Crown) and continues to this day. Integrated into the lofty stain glass windows are scenes from the times, including, to my surprise, images of anonymous sportsmen that represent how athleticism is an essential spiritual pursuit.
From Time Magazine (1951):
The Right Rev. Horace W. B. Donegan, Protestant Episcopal bishop of New York, dedicated a new… (more…)

The air is way different in the new stadium. I’ve seen the light, especially after Hideki Matsui’s home run that would have went foul in the Cathedral. Anyway, some more snapshots of the new Stadium:

The obligatory "Grandstand View" shot. Yes, that's the pitch in mid-flight.

Grabbed the camera for Workout Day at the stadium. Tickets were free, but they were actually checking them at each section. Believe that? Anyway, I had about an hour to walk around and take it all in before I had to go back to making the donuts. Here are the results:

Yankees win. Mets win.
Phil Hughes aka The Sixth Man pitched 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball, and just a couple of pitches short of no-run outing. Mark Teixeira hit his first home run of the spring. Brett Gardner went 1-for-3 and of course, added a stolen base. Austin Jackson had four at-bats and bashed a late-inning home run. He’s my boy in 2010, the year we make contact. David Robertson, 1.1 innings with 3 K’s. Another guy I want to see in 2010, just in time to combat a young surging Baltimore Oriole crew. Tomorrow, it’s Joba Chamberlain versus the Tigers.
