Yankees lose.
Did anyone think that the Yankees would take three from Philly, in Philly, with Cliff Lee on the hill? That fantasy is dispelled, and the defending champions have pushed the series back into the Bronx for a sixth and perhaps seventh contest. Pedro vs. Pettitte starts just before 8pm on Tuesday.
The Yanks scored in the first inning. Johnny Damon singled with one out off the end of his bat. Mark Teixeira went to 3-0 before Lee worked him back to 3-2 and induced a flyout. Alex Rodriguez sized up a 1-1 fastball on the outer half of the plate and socked a line drive through the infield that took off into the right field corner for a double. Damon was running on contact and came all the way… (more…)
Yankees Take a Step Back, Touch Down in Bronx for Series Finale
Damon Dastardly, Jorge Hollerin’, ARod Slammin’, Yanks Up 3-1
Yankees win.
Cliff Lee can not throw on three days’ rest, and as a result, Joe Blanton found himself on the hill facing the nuclear-powered Yankee lineup. In the end he kept his team in the game to the tune of four runs and seven K’s over six innings, but cracks were driven deep into the Phillie bullpen and Brad Lidge (or, “Ledge” as coined by Uncle Sal) lost hold of a 4-4 tie in the ninth.
The action started early. Derek Jeter led off with an infield single on a bounding ball to the hole between second and first. Chase Utley got to it with a dive, but slipped coming back to his feet and didn’t get a throw off. Johnny Damon went 2-0 before rifling a double to… (more…)
Yanks Smash Hamels, Pick Up Pettitte, Series at 2-1
Yankees win.
The Yanks looked pretty powerful last night, bashing three home runs. To the surprise of the baseball world, these Yanks can actually put the ball out of the yard, away from the “friendly wind currents” of the New Yankee Stadium. And, even more to the surprise of the baseball world, Andy Pettitte has enough left in the tank to keep his team in the game – after a long career of ups & downs, revelations and admissions, through victory and defeat. Andy got the win last, his bar-setting 17th postseason victory in 26 decisions.
After an hour and twenty minute delay, the game started and the Phils took the initiative immediately. Cole Hamels mowed through the top three hitters on ten pitches. Jimmy Rollins… (more…)
Highly Influential Pitching Great Tossed Aside; Yanks Win
Yankees win.
A.J. Burnett left the field last night in the bottom of seventh inning last night, his face showing focus and determination, as he had fought the Phillies to every batter and pinned them down for one barely earned run on four scattered hits. This was nothing short of a clutch showing for the unpredictable two-man. The line will show nine strikeouts (including four to RBI-monster Ryan Howard) and two walks (one of them issued intentionally to Chase Utley).
Pedro Martinez left the field grinning at the raucous Bronx crowd in the the seventh inning, but any good card player would surmise that the smile was a tell. The Yanks got to him good.
Burnett started off right, pounding a first-pitch strike to his first eleven batters with a knife-edged fastball. The Phils scored in… (more…)
Miranda Right On ::: It Wasn't Wright's Night
Yanks win. Mets lose.
Standings. Boston clinches the AL wildcard. The Tigers win, maintain two-game lead over the Twins for the AL Central. They have two games left in the series, then the Tigers close the regular season with a three-game set against the White Sox while the Twins face the Royals. Braves lose, Rox win. Rockies have a three-game lead for the NL wildcard, with two games left in their series with the Brewers and a three-game set against the Dodgers to close the season. Braves have one more versus the Marlins and then face Nationals for four games.
Trade Juan Miranda, right now! He’ll never have a higher value.
Mike Pelfrey is wasted on the Nationals.
Slam-Happy Cano Leads Yanks to Win #101 ::: Mets Lose
Yanks Beat Perennial Wild Card Scammers ::: Franky Does Florida
Yanks' B-Squad Clips Angels ::: Braves on a Warpath, Scalp Mets
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUPERNAUT!
Yanks win. Mets lose.
Standings. Watch those Braves, watch those Twins, watch those Giants!
A big win for the Yanks, taking two of three late in the season in Anaheim with a “de-pleted” squad. I like Ramiro Pena over Jerry Hairston, book that. Robbie Cano knocked in two runners from scoring position with two outs. A.J. Burnett had plenty of Ks. Ian Kennedy is still alive and starting to kick again. The late season road trip ends 3-3, I’ll take that. Now let’s take these Sox!
Mike Pelfrey and Co. continue to compete at some level, but the Braves are a hungry team looking for a playoff berth. Says Mike:
“It’s tough. It’s like going to work every day and having a… (more…)
Yankees Drop Second Consecutive Stinker to Ms ::: Manly Maine Takes Series
Yanks lose. Mets win.
Standings.
You all know my opinion on the Joba Rules. Look to the Angels to take two of three on this road trip which seems specifically effective in tiring out the Yanks before the final Boston series.
John Maine looked impressive in this late season, get-back-on-your-horse outing, going 75 pitches deep into five innings of shutout-ball. Dan Murphy is overjoyed to see Carlos Beltran.
Sabathia Stops Seattle, Tex Towers ::: Halleluia, Mets Win, We Shall Overcome
Yanks win. Mets win.
Standings.
CC Sabathia pitched the definitive seven-innings of eight-strikeout ball, winning a duel with the improbaby-named Doug Fister. Through my bleary-eyed late night haze I managed to view some bashing and mangling at the plate, led by Mark “The Club” Teixeira, but the memories are incoherent. Kids, thank Mister Selig for the late-season west coast schedule! Thanks, Mister Selig.
Mets managed to knock in a victory versus tough luck Senators pitcher John Lannan, as Tim Redding also went seven innings deep. This, on the heels of the SHOCKING, ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING NEWS that Carlos Delgado might not be available for the rest of the season and may have played his last game as a Met. Dan “The… (more…)
Mariano Succumbs To Jet Lag, Ichiro Walk-Off ::: Mets Squeak Out Loss
Yanks lose. Mets lose. Twins over Tigers.
Mariano Rivera, great friends to Jorge Posada, refuses to allow an A.J. victory with Jose Molina behind the plate. You see, I can say that. I can think of a million explanations, true, but a loss is a loss is a loss.
Mets were nearly victorious, but managed to eke out a gutsy loss to the Nationals. Beltran got thrown out at the plate to luckily prevent a score in the close game, and Pelfrey gave up four earned runs which wouldn’t have crossed the plate if it wasn’t for his dynamite effort.
Watch out for those Twins!!!
Yanks Walk It Off ::: Murphy Boots Grounder, Braves Boot Mets
Yanks win. Mets lose.
Standings.
Francisco Cervelli, catcher of the future.
Dan Murphy, left fielder of the future.
